TI-Nspire Graphing Basics (Using Operating System 3.2) Settings Before you begin graphing on the TI-Nspire, it is a good idea to set the default Document Settings. On the Home screen, select 5. Settings, 2: Document Settings. In Precalculus and AP Calculus, Display Digits should be set to Float and Angle should be set to Radian measure. (Press e on your calculator to move from one field to the next.) Tab to Make Default. Press. With Operating System 3.2, the Graphs and Geometry Settings are found on a Graphs page. On the Home screen, select 1. New Doc. Select 2: Add Graphs. 1
From the b, select 9: Settings. Set Display Digits to Auto, Graphing Angle to Radian, and Geometry Angle to Degree. Check Show axis end values and Automatically find points of interest. (Press e on your calculator to move from one field to the next.) Tab to Make Default. Press. Now your calculator has settings that are ready for Graphs documents. 2
Problem I: Adjusting the Viewing Window on a Graph and Tracing 2 To graph y 2x 3x 10, enter The vertex of the parabola does not show in this standard window. 2 2x 3x 10 after f1( x). Press. One way to adjust the window is to put the pointer in an open space of the graph and hold the xkey down until the pointer turns into a closed fist ù. Then use the arrows on the Touchpad or Nav Pad to drag the graph on the screen. Press d when you are finished. Another way to adjust the window is to move the cursor to the dimension you want to change. Click x twice on the dimension until it turns black. Then type the new dimension and press. The graph will be drawn in the new window. 3
A third way to adjust the window is similar to the method used on the TI-83 s or TI-84 s. Press b, then select 4:Window/Zoom, then 1:Window Settings. Enter values you want in each field. Use the e key to move from one field to the next. Press e to OK, then.. 4
Tracing on a Graph From the b, select 5: Trace, then 1: Graph Trace. Use the and arrows on the touchpad to move a point along the graph. The coordinates of the point are shown in the lower right corner of the screen Press to paste the coordinates of any point on the screen.. When you trace to a point that is a zero, the word zero appears on the screen To paste the coordinates of the zero onto the screen, press. 5
A label will also indicate if you trace to the y -intercept, a local maximum, or a local minimum point on the graph. Press to paste the coordinates on the screen. Press d to deactivate the trace. You may want to grab and move coordinates so they are easier to read. 6
Problem 2: Finding the Zero of a Function Using Analyze Graph Insert New Problem On TI-Nspire Touchpad, press ~, 4:Insert, then 1:Problem. Select 2:Add Graphs. In problem 2, you will find the zero of the function Enter the function in f 1. f 1( x) x x
From b, select 6: Analyze Graph then 1: Zero. Move pointer to left side of zero,, then the right side,.. 8
Problem 3: Finding Minimum and Maximum points using Analyze Graph Insert a new problem. On TI-Nspire Touchpad, press ~, 4:Insert, then 1:Problem. In problem 3, you will find the coordinates of the turning points of the function 3 2 f 1( x) x x 2x. Enter the function in f 1. From b, select 6: Analyze Graph then 2: Minimum. 9
Move pointer to left side of the low point,, then the right side,. From b, select 6: Analyze Graph then 3: Maximum. Move pointer to left side of the low point,, then the right side,. 10
Storing a value To store a value for later use, highlight the value to store. Press /h, then type the name of your variable. Press. A value that has been stored as a variable will be shown in bold print. 11
Problem 4: Finding Points of Intersection Using Analyze Graph Insert New Problem. On TI-Nspire Touchpad, press ~, 4:Insert, then 1:Problem. 2. Add Graphs. In problem 4, you will find points of intersections of f 2( x) x 2x f 1( x) x 3x 2 and Enter the first function in f 1. Press e, then enter the second function in f 2. 12
From b, select 6: Analyze Graph then 4: Intersection. Move pointer to left side of the point of intersection,, then the right side,. Press again to anchor the coordinates on your graph. Repeat the steps to find the other intersection point. 13
Problem 5: Finding Points of Intersection Using Geometry, Points & Lines Insert New Problem. On TI-Nspire Touchpad, press ~, 4:Insert, then 1:Problem. In problem 5, you will find points of intersections of 2 2 f 1( x) x 3x 2 and f 2( x) x 2x 4 using a method which will give all intersection points in the same step. f. Press e, Enter the first function in 1 then enter the second function in f 2. Press b, select 8: Geometry, then 1: Point & Lines, then 3: Intersection Point(s). 14
Point to the first curve to highlight it, and press. and press. Point to the second curve to highlight it, The coordinates of all points of intersection will appear. Press d. You can grab and move labels on the graph to make them easier to read. Tables To see a table corresponding to your graphed functions, press / T. The screen will be split into a graph and a table. If the table is highlighted, you can move within the table. 15
