3 LessoN Using the Coordinate Plane CCSS:.G. PART Introduction A coordinate plane is made of two number lines, or aes. One is horizontal and is called the -ais. The other is vertical and is called the -ais. The number lines intersect at the origin, or (, ). -ais origin A -ais B Vertical means up and down. Horizontal means across. Each point is described b an ordered pair. The coordinates in the ordered pair identif the location of the point on the coordinate plane. The -coordinate is the first number. It tells the distance from, moving right. The -coordinate is the second number. It tells the distance from, moving up. Look at point A on the coordinate plane above. Its ordered pair is (, ). Move units right from. Then move units up. Look at point B. Its ordered pair is (, ). Move units right from. Then move units up. Ordered pairs are alwas in the same order.
