The United States is our closest neighbour and is our largest trading partner. Material we import or buy from the USA are based on the Imperial System. The Imperial Systems is the United States official system of measure. The Imperial Fractions

4 U7L2 Converting Between Metric and Imperial.notebook July 07, 2013 Today's Topic : Converting between Metric and Imperial Today's Goal : I can convert between Metric and Imperial systems by applying my knowledge of ratios and proportion. Example: Convert the following. 1) 17" to cm 2) 34 metres to feet 3) 125 lbs. to kg 4) 22 degrees Celsius to Fahrenheit Example: Your cousins from the USA are visiting. To help with cost conversions, explain to them how much $1.30 / L of gasoline is in terms of American money and gallons. (Assume Canadian and American money is trading even). Example: Many European farm equipment is built using metric wrenches. Although it is not exact, determine what approximate metric size bolts would work with a 9/16" and 3/4" wrench.

5 MFM 2P U7L2 Volume of Prisms and Pyramids Topic : Volume Goal : to be able to find the volume of prisms and then use that volume to calculate the volume of a pyramid. 9.1 Volume of Prisms and Pyramids Before you watch this video, be sure to go and watch the demonstration video linked in the flipped classroom with this video. A prism is a shape that has two congruent, parallel sides. All other faces are rectangles and join these two sides. Rectangular Based Prism Triangular Based Prism To find the volume of a prism, you must first find the Area of the Base (or top, they are the same shape), the multiply by the distance between them (a.k.a the height of the prism) V=A base H

6 MFM 2P U7L2 Volume of Prisms and Pyramids Example 1. Find the volume of the given rectangular prism. A rectangular prism is a special case, in that it can be said to have 3 different bases. So you end up just multiplying all three dimensions. It's a pretty simple formula to remember. V=lwh Example 2. Find the volume of the following triangular prism. First find the area of the base of the prism. This time it is a triangle. Then use the formula V = A base H to find the volume. A base = ½bh V = A base H Volume of Pyramids As you saw in the demonstration, finding the volume of a pyramid is just the volume of a prism, divided by three (three pyramids fit in a prism with the same base and height) V=A base H 3 or 1 V= A base H 3

8 MFM 2P U7L3 Surface Area and Volume of Cylinders Topic : cylinders Goal : I can find the surface area and volume of cylinders 9.3 Surface Area and Volume of Cylinders We can think of a cylinder as just a circular prism. In that case the volume of a cylinder is given by V = A base H Since we know the base is a circle, we know the formula for area of the base and can make a more specific formula for the volume of a cylinder. Example 1. Find the volume of the given cylinder.

9 MFM 2P U7L3 Surface Area and Volume of Cylinders Example 2. Each tennis ball is a sphere with a radius of 3.25 centimeters. Find the volume of the can of tennis balls. Round to the nearest cubic centimeter. Example 3. The volume of a cylinder is in 3. If the radius is 5 in, what is the height? Surface Area The surface area is just what it sounds like - the area of all the surfaces added together. If we unroll a cylinder, this is what it looks like - 2 circles and a rectangle.

14 MPM 2P U7L4 Volume of Cones and Spheres Topic : Volume Goal : I can find the volume of cones and spheres 9.4 Volume of Cones and Spheres If you haven't done so already - go watch the demo video I linked to proving the formula for volume of a cone. The video demonstration showed that 3 cones can fit into a cylinder. So if I divide the volume of a cylinder by 3, I will get the the volume of a cone that has the same BASE and the same HEIGHT as a cylinder. V = A baseh 3 or V = r 2 h 3 Example 1. A cylinder has a volume of 333 m 3. What is the volume of a cone that has the same base and height? Example 2. Find the volume of the given cone.

15 MPM 2P U7L4 Volume of Cones and Spheres Example 3. A conveyor belt at a gravel pit drops sand so that it forms a pile in roughly the shape of a cone. The radius increases at a rate of 50 cm/min and the height increases at a rate of 20 cm/min. If the conveyor is turned on and left to run for an hour, What volume of sand is moved to the pile? Volume of a Sphere I'm just going to give you the formula for this one and show you how to use it. or 4 3 Example 4. What is the volume of the given sphere?
