Commission V Handles NDT weld related topics Sub-commission VA Radiographic Testing Sub-commission VC Ultrasonic Testing Sub-commission VE Electric, Magnetic and Optical Techniques Sub-commission VF NDT Reliability and Simulation
Sub-commission VC Ultrasonic based weld inspection techniques Probably best known past project is design if the IIW Block Described by ISO 2400 Standard
IIW Block
PAUT Cal Block Project Background Project question: Is the existing IIW block well suited for PAUT calibration or is another block required? There is no existing globally accepted standardized PAUT calibration block design Existing ISO 2400 block not ideally suited for PAUT calibration
Project Mission Statement Design a practical and affordable phased array calibration block that can handle the basic calibration functions required by existing standards, which is widely applicable to many industries and countries.
Relevant Codes ASME ISO/WD Part 1: Phased-array instruments Part 2: Phased-array probes Part 3: Phased-array systems ISO code requires additional checks: Channel assignment and relative sensitivity variations Some beam characterization measurements, including squint angle and grating lobes Simultaneous measurement of the index point and the angle of refraction Check of imaging and imaging algorithms, which is mainly required for S-scans
Other Considerations There are many other possible measurements that are not driven by code requirements These are typically application specific Examples are: Angular resolution Angular sensitivity Sensitivity Setting sensitivity on notches Maximum steering angle
ISO/WD Block Design Top View Front View
Modeling Modeling used extensively for block design Two stages to modeling matrix: 1. Overall block design 2. Different probes and anisotropy variations CIVA software was used, with the following capabilities: Full beam propagation model Semi-analytical method based on impulse response functions Model defect interactions Model material anisotropy
Modeling S-scan Verification Modeling S-scan response from the vertically oriented SDH
Modeling Element Assignment Modeling response from sloped back wall Probe placement B-scan of elements fired sequentially
Modeling Material Anisotropy Modeling probe rotation around z-axis
Measuring Material Anisotropy Allowable velocities: VL0 = 5920 m/s ± 30 m/s VT0 = 3255 m/s ± 15 m/s Same values as ISO 2400 Probe placements for measuring material velocities in three spatial directions
Usage Document Include Annex B in ISO/WD on block usage Annex B is a shortened version of an IIW Booklet Probe index measurement
Usage Document (cont) Beam angle 70 position Beam angle 45 position Beam squint
Project Completion ISO/WD submitted in March 2015 for a second vote The second vote is not technical Expect results in late summer and the standard in place by end of 2015
