2 Decimal REFERENCE SHEET Place Value Standard Form Expanded Form Written Form, one thousand two hundred eighty-six five and 3 hundredths four hundred fifty-six thousandths Millions Hundred-Thousands Ten-Thousands Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones. Tenths Hundredths Thousandths Ten-thousandths Hundred-thousandths Millionths,000,000 00,000 0, and ,000 00,000,000,000 Equivalent Decimals Equivalent Decimals are decimals that name the same value. They are equal to each other. You can add zeros at the end of the number or take them away. 0.3 = = = = = = 8.90 = Comparing & Ordering To compare decimals, you compare their place value. Add zeros to the right of the decimal if needed. Values increase as you move to the right on a number line.. Line up the decimal point To order from least to greatest, line up the decimal point Begin at the left. Find the first place where the digits are different Add zeros so that all numbers have the same decimal places Compare the values of the digits. 4 is greater than 3 so, > 3. Compare the value of the digits < <

3 Rounding. Find the place value you are rounding to. Underline it. 2. Look at the neighbor to the right. If the neighbor is 5 or more, raise the score add more to the underline digit. 4 or less, give it a rest. 3. Change all the numbers to the right of the underline digit to zero or drop them. 4. Be mindful when rounding whole numbers and decimals. Round to the nearest tenths The place value is 9. The neighbor is 3. Since 3 is less than 5, give it a rest Round to the nearest hundredths The place value is 8. The neighbor is 6. Since 6 is greater than 5, add to the underline digit Round to the nearest ten The place value is 2. The neighbor is 3. Since 3 is less than 5, then give it a rest and turn 3 to zero. 20. Decimal: Adding and Subtracting. Line up the decimal points. All numbers have a decimal point. If you don t see one, then place one at the end of the number (Behind the number) 7 = = Add zeros (You don t want a ragged right side). 3. Add and subtract. Regroup/borrow as necessary. Example : = Example 2: Example 3:

4 Decimal: Multiplying You multiply decimal numbers the same way you multiply whole numbers. The only difference is the placement of the decimal point. 0.7 x 0.8 = 0.56 Factors Product Ways to show multiplication (6) symbol dot parenthesis. Multiply as if the factors are whole numbers. *line up the numbers 2. Count the places to the right of the decimal point in each factor. 3. Check divisorà Is it a whole number? Yes Go to Step Place the decimal point in the dividend directly above in the quotient (the answer). 3. Divide as usual 4. Check your answer by multiplying the quotient with the divisor. It should equal the dividend. 500 ).*+, No Then move the decimal point in the divisor to make it a whole number. Also, move the decimal point in the dividend the same number of places. Go to Step 2. Example:
