KLOE software on Linux Offline review L.N.F. March 16, 2001 C. Bloise, P. Valente
Linux box : Minimal requirements apentium class PC (Intel Pentium, PII, PIII or AMD K6,K7) RAM and local disk sufficient for installation of a Linux 2.x distribution Ethernet 10 Mbit card Linux distribution with 2.2.x or later kernel, RedHat strongly recommended, release 6.2 or later afs Linux client (openafs or arla)
4 Linux boxes : LNF Linux mini-farm double Pentium III 600 MHz 256 Mb RAM, 2 20 Mb EIDE disks (+ SCSI) Ethernet 10/100 Mbit card Linux distribution with kernel, RedHat 6.2 afs Linux client (openafs) 8CPU stotal
Adapting KLOE software Steps: 0 Basic requirements: system, users, compilers... 1 Get or recompile basic programs, not strictly KLOE software, but necessary for compilation and software management 2 Compile basic KLOE libraries: ybos, analysis control, DB, etc. 3 Compile GEANFI, Monte Carlo executable 4 Compile reconstruction libraries part 1: Fortran 77 5 Compile reconstruction libraries part 2: Fortran 90-like, link_ana, build DATAREC 6 Optimisation
Adapting KLOE software: step A Linux box with nfs mount of /kloe/soft area (from krunc) in order to write recompiled libraries (afs mirror is read-only...) 0.2 Users for compilation of libraries: kloe for offline and daqlib for online 0.3 gcc C compiler and Fortran 77 (to start with...) 0.4 CERN software, available from ASIS, such as CMZ, CVS, CERNLIB, PAWLIB, etc.
Adapting KLOE software: step Recompile ups (from FNAL) for offline package management (setup command) 1.2 declare all offline packages to ups database (setup offline, etc.) 1.3 Recompile expand for translating from platform independent format,.cdf and.kloe,to C and Fortran languages 1.4 Recompile kloe_build for handling makefiles of offline libraries (rebuild command)
Adapting KLOE software: step Recompile all platform dependent tools, both Fortran an C libraries: e_l, s_i (directories, file handling), uipack (file names, logical units): significant modifications of source code for Linux branch 2.2 Recompile ybos package (both Fortran 77 and C code) to handle binary file format: added Linux branch, similar to OSF
Adapting KLOE software: step Recompile all basic online libraries: Common, SQLremote,... (common online library, DB2 connection,...): Only small modifications: C code already Linux-compiler friendly, added Linux makefiles 2.4 Recompile analysis control: a_c Modifications to add Linux case in system dependent branches, $ sign in Fortran code...
Adapting KLOE software: step 3 1. Recompile MC executable: GEANFI Some modifications in old Fortran coding (COMMON blocks, intrinsic functions, ugly complex, etc.) 2. Test output of Monte Carlo generation
Test MC output on Linux SunOs Linux a 0 γ events From γ clusters SunOs Linux MC true
Test MC output on Linux a 0 γ events SunOs Linux
Adapting KLOE software: step 4 Recompile offline libraries Fortran 77 only: sqz, ddb, tca,... Mainly modifications in old Fortran coding (COMMON blocks, intrinsic functions, hexadecimal constants, formats)
Adapting KLOE software: step 5 Recompile offline libraries with Fortran 77 + Fortran 90-like: trk, tls, emc, ecl, trg... Mainly modifications in mixed Fortran 77 coding and Fortran 90 structures (+ again problems with COMMON blocks and hexadecimal constants)
Adapting KLOE software: step Solution adopted: f90 to f77 translator (Pacific Sierra vf90) This compiler was chosen to retain gnu f77 compiler flags, not possible with pure f90 compilers: compatibility with $ sign, needed by analysis control. handling of double underscore in object files needed for C function called by Fortran code ( wrapping ), e.g. ybos
Adapting KLOE software: step f90 bit manipulating functions different from gnu f77 ones... vf90 compatibility library modified to include gnu f77 bit manipulating functions 5.3 Second pass after expand for vf90 conversion and source code cleaning (N$A variable in analysis control)
Adapting KLOE software: step link_ana Linux version (almost) TODAY 5.5 Build datarec.exe (many problems in handling large binary output from the ld linker with nfs v2) 5.6 Test output of reconstruction, both on MC files and on data files (still working on that...)
Adapting KLOE software: step 6 Optimisations......a chapter still to be written. Moreover: Clean link_ana Simpler rebuild procedure for f90 libraries Simpler compile script for f90
Some other work going on Check status of all systems: use BigBrother to monitor the machine status Check compatibility with other Linux distributions and kernels (executable OK for RedHat 7.0, kernels and ), check compatibility with non-intel processors (OK for AMD K7); to do: check different newest gnu compiler Try to use nfs v3 client, to improve performances, with future kernels (not reliable even patching vs , or 2.4.x kernels...) Try to optimise afs cache
Tracking: some problems 1. Loop in pattern recognition for some kind of events; 2. NaN to magnetic field interpolation 3. Different results (not dramatic but significant) To do
To do TSKT: trigger simulation crashing MCDATAREC.EXE Checking reconstruction: still work to do Try on data Try commercial f90 compilers still work to do
