3 Introduction From a regulatory perspective, the recognition of sound as an important environmental issue has led many countries to adopt mitigation measures to prevent adverse effect on marine mammals. Monitoring, whether visual or acoustic, is a key tool in the evaluation of compliance and mitigation measures effectiveness. It is therefore critical to develop technologies to address both. These must be cost effective and whenever possible reduce HSE exposure to become fully successful.
