The strobe itself is factory sealed; do not disassemble. Disassembly will void your Ikelite DS s limited warranty. Do not continuously fire the strobe more than time in rapid succession. If this does happen, allow the strobe to cool down for at least minutes. DS Bulkhead Cap I K E L I T E D S S U B S T R O B E INTRODUCTION Thank you for purchasing an Ikelite Substrobe. Ikelite brings years of underwater photographic and lighting experience to the strobe market. Ikelite Substrobes are designed and built in the USA by Ikelite to suit both the professional and the amateur photographer. DS SUBSTROBE USE The purpose of a strobe is to illuminate the subject and assist the camera in taking vivid pictures. The Ikelite DS strobe is equally suited for general and wide-angle photography, covering up to with a diffuser. The compact size of the DS makes it ideal for macro photography while its K-color temperature helps bring out the true colors of the underwater world. The Ikelite DS strobe is preflash compatible and operates with traditional film cameras, dslr cameras, and digital still cameras. TTL/auto and manual exposure firing modes are featured. Add the optional Ikelite EV Manual Controller #. for manual power settings. The DS s electronics are safely sealed away from the battery compartment. Aim the DS strobe and illuminate your subject s colors with the optional Mini-C Lite and Lite Bracket #. The bracket secures beneath the strobe, allowing the Mini-C Lite to be used as both an aiming light and as a night diving light. OVERVIEW OF DS FEATURES Mode switch features TTL/auto and manual exposure settings. Battery compartment accommodates four AA batteries: alkaline, NiCad, or NiMH. Ready light indicates when strobe has recycled. Female Ikelite bulkhead connector accepts different camera sync cords and the EV Manual Controller #.. Exposure guide label references recommended exposure settings. Diffuser provides softer lighting, wider coverage angle and reduces strobe output by one f-stop. Strobe mount connects to most Ikelite arm systems. STARTING OUT Before using the Ikelite DS Substrobe, please read this owner s manual thoroughly and retain it for future reference. Ikelite recommends becoming familiar with the features and functions of the Ikelite DS Substrobe above water before trying the camera and strobe in the water. And, if you have not yet done so, it is suggested that you read your camera s owner s manual as well.

3 M O D E S W I T C H The DS Substrobe s mode switch has eight different positions: OFF, TTL/auto exposure setting, and six manual exposure settings. OFF POSITION (Fig.) Shows the mode switch in the OFF position. The white indicator on the knob aligns with OFF. Always turn the substrobe to OFF before connecting or disconnecting a sync cord or opening the battery compartment. TTL/AUTO EXPOSURE POSITION (Fig.) Shows the mode switch in the TTL (Thru-the-Lens) / auto exposure position. From the OFF position, rotate the switch clockwise to access the TTL/auto exposure setting; the white indicator on the knob aligns with TTL. When taking pictures with the mode switch in this position, the camera automatically signals the strobe to turn off when the exposure is correct. Note: When the DS is connected directly to the camera, the camera must feature compatible TTL/auto exposure to utilize this mode. (See TTL/Auto Exposure, page and Compatible Cameras, page.) The TTL/auto firing mode must be selected when connecting the EV Manual Controller #.. MANUAL EXPOSURE POSITION (Fig.) Shows the mode switch in the manual exposure mode with the DS Substrobe turned to the F (full power) position. Rotate the mode switch clockwise to access the different power settings. Each power setting clockwise from F reduces the light output of the DS Substrobe in one-half f-stop increments. When shooting in the manual mode, it is suggested that you start the strobe at full power and adjust the camera s aperture based on the strobe-to-subject distance. (See Exposure Guide, page.) If the subject in the photo is underexposed (dark) you must move closer to the subject. If the subject is overexposed (light), then you can rotate the mode switch clockwise to reduce the light output of the strobe until the desired exposure is obtained. The DS provides five reductions in power in one-half f-stop increments from the full power setting. (Fig.), for example, shows the mode switch set to - and / f-stops. Knob Battery Door Mode Switch B A T T E R Y C O M P A R T M E N T OPENING THE COMPARTMENT Always turn the substrobe to OFF before opening the battery door located at the back of the strobe. To access the battery compartment, rotate the knob counter-clockwise several times and gently pull the door off. Tilt the rear portion of the strobe down while removing the battery door to eliminate the possibility of water droplets falling into the battery compartment after a dive. Note: Do not remove the knob from the battery door. Caution: The battery compartment is sealed separately from the main electronics. Do not disassemble the strobe. Disassembly will void your Ikelite limited warranty. BATTERY COMPARTMENT O-RING Be aware of the position of the o-ring around the perimeter of the battery door. Note: Keep the o-ring and sealing surfaces clean. Lightly lubricate the exposed portion of the o-ring with the Ikelite silicone lubricant provided. Use only enough lubricant to cover the o-ring; wipe off any excess with a clean cloth. (See Lubricant on page.) CHANGING THE BATTERIES Install four AA-cell batteries: alkaline, NiCad, or NiMH. Refer to the + and markings in the battery compartment to help properly install the batteries. If the batteries are installed incorrectly, it may damage the strobe s electronics. Always carry spare batteries; weak batteries cause many camera and strobe problems. It s time to replace the batteries when, after the DS has flashed, the ready light remains dark for seconds or longer. (See Strobe Ready Light, page.) Note: It is possible to buy bad new batteries; check the voltage output with a meter. CLOSING THE COMPARTMENT Again, check that the o-ring and sealing surfaces are clean and that the o-ring is lightly lubricated. Make sure the o-ring is back in its original position. Replace the battery door. Make sure the door fits into the recess around the battery compartment. Rotate the knob clockwise several times and firmly hand-tighten to assure the proper o-ring seal; otherwise, the battery compartment may leak. Caution: Do not use a tool when tightening. It may damage the battery door. (Fig.) (Fig.) Ready Light (Fig.) (Fig.) Waterproof Bulkhead Cap Strobe Mount

4 S T R O B E R E A D Y L I G H T The Ikelite DS Substrobe features a ready light at the rear of the strobe that glows when the DS has recycled and is ready to fire its flash again. This recycling time should not exceed seconds. If the glow disappears for longer than seconds between flashes, it may be time for new batteries. (See Changing the Batteries on page.) Note: The strobe ready light does not indicate correct or incorrect exposure. Ready Light The strobe ready light works in special ways with certain cameras and optional equipment, see Camera Ready Light below. CAMERA READY LIGHT Triggered via Sync Cord When using a TTL/auto exposure camera (film or dslr digital) in an Ikelite TTLcompatible housing connected to the DS strobe by sync cord, the flash ready light in the camera viewfinder and the DS ready light will both glow when the Substrobe has recycled and is ready to fire. If the Ikelite housing does not feature TTL compatible circuitry, then the ready light in the camera viewfinder would not glow when the strobe has recycled. Triggered via Slave Sensor When using the DS strobe with the optional DS Sensor or EV Manual Controller (without optional sync cord), the strobe is not electronically connected to the camera. Therefore, the ready light in the viewfinder of the camera indicates when the on-camera flash has recycled. Examine both the camera and DS ready lights to make sure both flashes have fully recycled before taking the next picture. T T L / A U T O E X P O S U R E Most newer cameras and strobes feature TTL/auto exposure, which automatically compensates for aperture, distance, extension tubes, and filters. Because there s such a wide range of apertures and subject distances, photographers who want to easily balance lighting and control close-up photography should select the TTL/auto exposure mode. When the strobe fires, the camera reads the light and automatically signals the strobe to turn off when the exposure is correct. TTL/auto exposure compatible electronics must be featured on both the strobe and camera in order for this to occur. The appropriate TTL sync cord or optional Ikelite sensor is required to relay the TTL/auto exposure signal from the camera to the strobe. Please review the Compatible Cameras section, on page for additional information. TTL SYNC CORDS Ikelite offers interchangeable sync cords so that different camera systems can be connected to the DS strobe. A TTL sync cord is required to send the TTL/auto exposure signal from the camera to the strobe. See also Strobe Connection, pages -, and Camera Connection, page. EV MANUAL CONTROLLER#. For maximum control over flash exposure, the Ikelite Exposure Value (EV) Controller can be used with the DS strobe. Certain things must be done when using the two products together, since both the DS and the EV Manual Controller have multiple manual power settings. Note: Only one device s range of settings can be used at a time When the DS s mode switch is set to any of its six manual power settings, the power settings on the EV Manual Controller are ignored. When the DS s mode switch is set to TTL, the power settings on the DS are ignored and the ten manual power settings on the EV Manual Controller become active.

5 C O M P A T I B L E C A M E R A S S T R O B E C O N N E C T I O N The Ikelite DS strobe is preflash compatible and provides optimum performance with traditional film cameras, digital still cameras, and dslr cameras in related Ikelite housings. The appropriate sync cord or sensor must be connected to trigger the strobe. The TTL/auto exposure mode on the Ikelite DS strobe is compatible with the following TTL/auto exposure camera systems. TRADITIONAL FILM CAMERAS The TTL/auto exposure mode on the Ikelite DS strobe is compatible with the following TTL film camera systems. The camera reads the light passing thru-the-lens and automatically signals the strobe to turn off when the exposure is correct. SLR mm camera in the Ikelite SLR-AF Housing or another brand SLR housing that features Nikon-based TTL electronics. Nikonos V camera Nikonos RS camera DIGITAL STILL AND dslr CAMERAS Triggered via Sync Cord Many Ikelite digital still housings and Ikelite dslr housings feature TTL compatible circuitry connected with the Ikelite female bulkhead connector. Connect the Ikelite sync cord from the Ikelite housing to the DS strobe for TTL auto exposure. Some other Ikelite housing models feature the Ikelite bulkhead connector but offer only manual exposure because TTL conversion circuitry for that specific camera model is unavailable or not yet developed. Triggered via Slave Sensor Some digital still cameras feature a small built-in flash without a means to connect a sync cord for an external strobe. Most of these cameras fire their built-in flash more than once while taking a flash picture. This happens so fast it is difficult to see, but the preflash helps the camera determine focus, exposure, and color balance. After the preflash, the camera's built-in flash then fires to illuminate the subject and the picture is taken. For the external strobe to provide proper exposure, it must be preflash compatible to duplicate the preflash sequence. The Ikelite DS strobe is a preflash compatible strobe. Because some of the newest digital still cameras feature a very quick preflash sequence, the Ikelite EV Manual Controller #. is the recommended option for using the DS. The optional Ikelite EV Manual Controller #. connects to the DS strobe and provides -manual power settings in half-stop increments. The EV Manual Controller can be triggered using the built-in slave sensor or by connecting an optional sync cord and provides maximum manual control of the exposure process. ikelite SUBSTROBE Bulkhead Connector (waterproof cap removed) Strobe Mount DS Ikelite Cord 51 Bulkhead Cap Stem O-ring Retaining Ring

6 S T R O B E C O N N E C T I O N cont. The female Ikelite bulkhead connector permits different Ikelite sync cords or the Ikelite EV manual controller sensor to be connected to the strobe. The sync cord or sensor relays a signal from the camera to the substrobe that tells the DS when to flash. The removable waterproof bulkhead cap seals the bulkhead connector when neither a cord nor a sensor is connected to the DS. The strobe s bulkhead connector must be sealed to remain waterproof. Caution: Do not use a TTL cord with a non-ttl substrobe; you will damage the camera. Do not leave the sync cord or sensor connected to the camera or strobe for prolonged periods as electrolysis could occur and make removal of the equipment impossible. Do not disconnect the sync cord or sensor from the camera or strobe when underwater or when wet. These items are not waterproof when disconnected. CONNECTION TO STROBE To connect either a sync cord or sensor to the DS Substrobe, follow these instructions:. Turn the substrobe to OFF and make sure all components are dry. Clean and lightly lubricate the stem o-ring and the bulkhead connector threads. Check the o-ring for nicks or cuts.. Note the positioning of the receptacles and pins on the end of the cord. Properly align the end of the cord and insert it into the strobe bulkhead connector. Note: When using the #. cord, which connects an Ikelite housing to an Ikelite Substrobe, both cord ends are identical; either end can be connected to the strobe.. Caution: The connector threads are very fine; do not cross thread. If it is difficult to turn the knurled retaining ring on the cord or sensor, you are cross-threading. This can make removal of the strobe or sensor impossible. Hand-tighten the knurled retaining ring on the cord or sensor. Push the end of the cord further into the bulkhead connector and continue to tighten the knurled retaining ring. Caution: Do not use a tool when tightening. It could damage the cord or strobe. C A M E R A C O N N E C T I O N Note: All of the directions regarding camera connection assume you have already attached your DS to a sync cord or EV Manual Controller. (See Strobe Connection, pages -.) IKELITE COMPACT DIGITAL CAMERA HOUSINGS (NON-SLR CAMERAS) Note: In order to connect an Ikelite compact digital camera housing to an Ikelite DS Substrobe, the camera being housed must have a hot shoe. There are three categories of compact digital camera housings:. Housing with no sync cord connector. This housing requires you to use the EV Manual Controller in slave mode. You can then either use the DS in manual exposure mode or switch the DS to TTL/auto exposure mode and use the power settings on the EV Manual Controller instead.. Housing with sync cord connector and conversion circuitry. This housing requires you to use a sync cord. The DS can then be used in either the TTL/auto exposure mode or the manual exposure mode.. Housing with sync cord connector but without conversion circuitry. This housing requires you to use a sync cord. The DS is then used in the manual exposure mode. IKELITE DIGITAL SLR CAMERA HOUSINGS All of these housings have a sync cord connector. All of these housings (except the Nikon D) have conversion circuitry, which allow Ikelite strobes to work with the camera s TTL circuitry. See your Ikelite housing Instructions for more information on conversion circuitry. Some of these housings have Exposure Compensation built into the housing. This allows for positive or negative adjustment of the TTL/auto exposure. Or you can switch to manual exposure and adjust the strobe output. IKELITE SLR FILM CAMERA HOUSINGS Connect with the Ikelite sync cord. Use the DS in TTL/auto or manual exposure mode. Stem O-ring Retaining Ring NIKONOS V, RS, AND NON-IKELITE SLR FILM CAMERA HOUSINGS WITH NIKONOS CONNECTOR Connect with the Nikonos sync cord. Use the DS in TTL/auto or manual exposure mode. Note: TTL/auto exposure availability will depend on the camera model being housed. NON-IKELITE DIGITAL CAMERA HOUSINGS WITH NIKONOS CONNECTOR Connect with the Nikonos sync cord. Use the DS in manual exposure mode. Note: These housings do not usually have conversion circuitry. If third party conversion circuitry is present in the housing, refer to the third party product s instructions for help in using the DS with this setup. 7 E X P O S U R E G U I D E Due to the loss of color when light passes through water, move closer to your subject to photograph thru as little water as possible. Note: The maximum recommended lighting distance underwater with any brand strobe is.m ('). Shooting a subject at a greater distance underwater will usually create bluish, silhouette type images. EXPOSURE LABEL The exposure label information is primarily intended for use with traditional film cameras since digital still cameras may require less light for proper exposure. The exposure label is compatible with TTL/auto and manual modes and references the DS strobe output without the diffuser installed. FILM ISO RATING ft M M M M M M M M m SUBSTROBE DS51 DISTANCE Output is 1/2 stop greater than shown in chart D I F F U S E R USING THE DIFFUSER The white diffuser can be secured to the front of the DS strobe when softer lighting or a coverage angle of up to is desired. The diffuser reduces the DS s light intensity by one full f-stop. When the diffuser is secured to the strobe, refer to the exposure guide information on page and increase the number by one. For the TTL/auto mode example with a film ISO rating of, if you set your camera to f- without the diffuser, you can shoot subjects up to.m (. ) away, as stated on page. If you add the diffuser to the strobe with the camera set at f- and using ISO film, you must reference one number greater than f- in the chart. In this case, that number is f-, meaning you can shoot subjects up to.m ( ) away. DIFFUSER INSTALLATION AND REMOVAL. The white diffuser features two protruding tabs for use in installation and removal. The tabs on the diffuser should be positioned away from the strobe.. Place the diffuser over the front of the strobe. Spread the two tabs apart, insert the diffuser into the recessed front, and then rotate the diffuser until it locks into position.. To remove the diffuser, bend one tab out towards the edge while lifting simultaneously. A lanyard can be attached to the diffuser by threading it through the two circular openings near its edge. TTL/auto Mode example: If you select f- with ISO film, you can shoot subjects up to.m (.') away. If you select f- with ISO film, you can shoot subjects up to.m (') away; however, Ikelite recommends shooting subjects no farther than.m (') away underwater. Manual Mode example: If you select f- with ISO film, the subject should be.m (.') away for proper exposure as indicated by the letter M. CAMERA APERTURE For balanced lighting between your subject and the background, meter the available light and set the camera aperture accordingly. Using a narrower aperture darkens the background. A wider aperture lightens the background and may over-expose the photograph. Tab Push and Lift to Remove Holes for Lanyard Tab

The arm is not supplied with the strobe unless purchased as part of a complete package. Caution: Ikelite arm systems are designed for underwater use. Be careful when transporting the system above water since some camera trays and arm adjustments may be unable to support the weight of the strobe(s) above water. The DS will feature either a paddle-type or ball-type mount on the underside of the strobe body. Please read Strobe Arm #. on page and Ball-Socket Arm #. on page for additional information. L I T E B R A C K E T # The optional Lite Bracket secures the Ikelite Mini-C Lite underneath the DS strobe for use as an aiming light and night diving light. The Lite Bracket is placed between the strobe body and the original strobe mount. Using a Phillips Head screwdriver, remove the strobe mount from underneath the strobe and secure the Lite Bracket in its place. Then, using the extra screw provided with the Lite Bracket, secure the strobe mount under the bracket. Strobe Mount Rubber Gasket Bolt Ikelite Substrobe Lite Bracket for Mini C-Lite ikelite SUBSTROBE DS 51 Screw This versatile Ikelite strobe arm offers multiple aiming positions. With a second joint (#.), an additional strobe arm can be used. MOUNT STROBE TO STROBE ARM The paddle-type strobe mount featured on the DS secures to most Ikelite arm systems, including the #. Strobe Arm; it allows the strobe to tilt forward and backward. Note: The rubber gaskets on the strobe mount and strobe arm create friction against the arm and should not be lubricated. MOUNT KNUCKLE ARM TO HOUSING The stem protruding at the base of the Knuckle arm snaps into the release handle on the Ikelite housing. To insert the stem into the release handle, depress the handle s release button and slide the stem fully into the opening on top of the handle. Release the button and it should spring back to its original position, locking the arm in place. The stem also provides a convenient location for securing the optional DS Slave Sensor or EV Manual Controller. AIM THE STROBE Loosen the large, four-pointed wing nut on the knuckle and insert the strobe arm through the opening on the opposite side. The strobe arm can be rotated, pivoted sideways, and pushed higher or lower before retightening the wing nut. 9 B A L L - S O C K E T A R M #. The articulating Ikelite Ball-Socket Arm secures the DS strobe to the release handles on all Ikelite digital still housings and SLR housings. The versatility of the arm s dual ball sockets is especially helpful during macro photography. They adjust independently and allow for a multitude of strobe mounting positions. The Ball-Socket Arm #. utilizes.cm ( ) diameter balls. Optional components to modify the arm are available. (See Ikelite Ball-Socket Components, pages -.) CONNECT STROBE TO STROBE MOUNT Ball Socket Wing Nut Wing Nut Ball Clamp Ball Clamp Stem A ball-type strobe mount is included with the Ball-Socket Arm #.. It is featured under the ball clamp at the top of the arm. There may be a small rubber pad secured to the top of the ball mount; remove this pad when using a DS with this kind of arm. The next step then depends on whether or not you have another kind of strobe mount currently attached to your DS. If there is no other mount, use the ball-type mount provided. There are screw openings at each end of the ball-type mount. Select the side that has an opening closest to the flat top of the mount. Slide that side of the ball-type mount under the DS until it aligns with the small screw opening located under the front part of the strobe. Then, using a Phillips Head Screwdriver with the screw provided, tighten the screw until the mount rests secure under the DS. If a paddle-type mount is already secured beneath the DS, simply remove the screw with a Phillips Head Screwdriver and follow the above instructions to replace it with the ball-type mount featured on the Ball-Socket Arm #.. Release Button Release Handle Strobe Mount Ball Socket Ikelite Substrobe IKELITE BALL-SOCKET COMPONENTS BALL-SOCKET COMPONENTS This page illustrates the range of interchangeable components available to add onto the Ikelite Ball-Socket Arm #.. Note: Tray mounts are offered for Ikelite, Universal, and Dovetail systems. A B C D E F G H I J K L A variety of Ikelite arm component utilizing.cm ( ) or.cm (. ) diameter balls are available and can be combined with the ball-socket systems of TLC, Nikon, and Ultralight that use.cm ( ) balls. (See Ikelite Ball-Socket Components on page for more information.) MOUNT ARM TO HOUSING The stem protruding at the base of the arm snaps into the release handle on the Ikelite housing. To insert the stem into the release handle, depress the handle s release button and slide the stem fully into the opening atop the handle. Release the button and it should spring back to its original position, locking the arm in place. The stem also provides a convenient location for securing the optional DS Slave Sensor or EV Manual Controller. USE BALL CLAMPS TO MOUNT STROBE TO ARM AND AIM STROBE Turn the wing nuts of the arm counter-clockwise to loosen the ball clamps. Position the ball of the strobe mount in the ball socket of the loosened ball clamp at the top of the arm. Once you are satisfied with the strobe s position, turn the wing nut clockwise to retighten until the DS rests securely. Loosen and retighten the wing nuts accordingly on each ball clamp to adjust the overall position of the arm. Each section of the ball-socket arm can rotate up to degrees. The cap in the center of each wing nut limits their movements so that the nut can not be turned all the way off. This insures that the arm cannot be accidentally disassembled. If desired, the center cap can be adjusted to remove this safety feature.

R E C O M M E N D A T I O N S VISUAL INSPECTIONS Visual inspections are important. Take the time to examine the entire assembled setup (strobe, camera housing, arms, etc.) above water. An improper seal or loose connection can cause a lot of damage. Always check for leaks once you place the equipment in the water. INSURANCE It is recommended that you add an all-risk floater to your homeowner s and/or renter s insurance policy to cover your equipment against loss or damage. While the Ikelite DS Substrobe has a limited warranty against manufacturing defects, it does not cover customer neglect. TIPS Photograph through as little water as possible; move in close. Maximum recommended shooting distance underwater is.m ( ). Use the diffuser for softer lighting or a coverage angle between and. Measure the light with a meter and set the camera aperture accordingly. Remember: a narrower aperture darkens the background; a wider aperture lightens it. TTL/auto exposure controls on some cameras can be set to adjust the aperture automatically. More natural looking photos can be achieved through the addition of a second external strobe. The Ikelite EV Manual Controller #. works well with a second strobe when you plan on using manual exposure. Always carry spare batteries. Weak batteries are the cause of many strobe and camera problems; check the voltage with a meter. Note: it s possible to buy bad new batteries. Do not fire the strobe more than times in rapid succession. If this does happen, allow the DS to cool off for at least minutes before resuming photography. LUBRICANT Use only Ikelite brand silicone lubricant with Ikelite brand o-rings; other brand lubricants can cause the Ikelite o-rings to swell in size. Do not use spray lubricant; it can crack the plastic parts of the strobe. Ikelite brand silicone lubricant is provided for the sync cord stem o-ring and the bulkhead connector threads. Use only enough lubricant to lightly cover the area being applied; wipe off any excess with a clean cloth. Lubricant only reduces friction; it is not a sealant.

11 M A I N T E N A N C E Your Ikelite DS Substrobe should be given the same care and attention as your other photographic equipment. After using your strobe in water, please follow these instructions to insure the DS s longevity and good working order. ROUTINE CLEANING Caution: Make sure the DS s battery door is on and tightened down before exposing the strobe to water. Ideally, water should never enter the battery compartment. If this does occur, see Battery Compartment Flooding on page.. Always rinse the exterior of the DS with fresh water after use, especially after exposure to salt water. While rinsing, turn the mode switch to free salt or debris that might have accumulated in the DS s recesses during the dive.. Dry the DS thoroughly. LONG TERM STORAGE Caution: Make sure the DS s battery door is on and tightened down before exposing the strobe to water. Ideally, water should never enter the battery compartment. If this does occur, see Battery Compartment Flooding on page.. Always rinse the exterior of the DS with fresh water after use, especially after exposure to salt water. While rinsing, turn the mode switch to free salt or debris that might have accumulated in the DS s recesses during the dive. Submerging the DS in a body of mildly warm water will clean the exterior of the strobe. After this soaking, rinse the DS once more to wash off any leftover debris or salt.. Dry the DS thoroughly.. Check the battery door s o-ring and sealing surfaces for any debris and gently wipe it away with a soft, lint free cloth. Lightly lubricate the exposed part of the door s o-ring.. Check the DS s bulkhead connector threads for debris. Gently wipe away with a soft, lint free cloth or a cotton swab to clean the threads. Afterwards, lightly lubricate them.. Remove the batteries and store the DS with the battery door lightly screwed on; this will allow any hydrogen/air mixture to escape the battery compartment and avoid placing unnecessary pressure on the o-ring that could cause it to flatten. For more information on lubricant, see Lubricant on page. In addition to these procedures, it is strongly recommended that this strobe be returned to Ikelite periodically for inspection and water pressure testing. Ideally your DS should undergo this process every two years or dives, whichever comes first. BATTERY COMPARTMENT FLOODING The battery compartment is separate from the DS s factory sealed electronics. Should the battery compartment flood, flush the compartment with fresh water and dry thoroughly. Determine the cause of the flooding to the best of your ability. Send the DS and other system components involved to Ikelite for inspection and testing as soon as possible. Often, divers find themselves in remote locations for extended periods without access to multiple strobes. If the strobe with the flooded battery compartment is the only one available to you at the time and you re desperate to continue shooting, please follow these instructions for a temporary fix:. Air out and thoroughly dry the battery compartment with air from a blow dryer or a SCUBA tank hose.. Wash out the battery compartment with alcohol. Repeat Step.. Caution: Replace all batteries after battery compartment flooding. Never re-use batteries that have been wet. The water could create an internal short circuit in the strobe at some later date, potentially causing an explosion. Reassemble with batteries.. After returning from your trip, send the DS and other system components to Ikelite for inspection and testing.

12 T R O U B L E S H O O T I N G STROBE WILL NOT FIRE. Check the DS s ready light. Turn the strobe s mode switch to OFF and then back to TTL. Make sure that the switch has actually clicked into position.. Check that the batteries are inserted according to the + and - markings. Note: it is possible to buy bad new batteries; check the voltage output with a meter. If using NiCad or NiMH batteries, make sure the charger is operating properly and that the batteries are fully charged.. Check the mode switches on the camera and strobe.. Check the cord connections at the camera and strobe.. Caution: When creating a circuit via paper clip, or shorting, pay close attention to which two receptacles you connect. If you short across the wrong receptacles on a TTL sync cord, you may damage the DS s electronics. The specific receptacles to connect with the paper clip vary based on the type of cord you own. Please refer to the diagram of two types of flash cord contacts. When using a sync cord between the camera and strobe, disconnect the cord from the camera but leave the cord connected to the strobe. Then use the two ends of a bent paper clip to connect different receptacles on the flash cord contacts, as detailed in the diagram below. This process, known also as shorting, creates a temporary circuit that can test-fire the strobe. FLASH CORD CONTACTS Ikelite PAPER CLIP Nikonos PAPER CLIP Ikelite TTL Cord: Point the raised half-circle at the end of the cord encompassing the receptacles towards you, per the above diagram. Place one end of the paper clip on the center receptacle and one end on the lower right-hand receptacle. The DS should flash. Nikonos TTL Cord: Point the indexing groove at the end of the cord towards you, per the above diagram. Place one end of the paper clip on the top-most, center receptacle and one end on the lower, right-hand receptacle. The DS should flash. If the DS flashes, the source of the problem lies somewhere in the camera. If the DS does not flash, please send both the strobe and cord used in the test to an authorized Ikelite dealer or to Ikelite itself; see Returning Products for Service on page. Caution: Do not attempt to repair the strobe or cord yourself. This may cause further damage and void your Ikelite limited warranty.
