2 Thank you for purchasing the EICKEMEYER VFS-8 Flexible Veterinary Endoscope. The 86cm endoscope is designed to provide direct visualization. Familiarize yourself with this instrument before using it in clinical procedures. Read the following instructions carefully. This unit is not sterile upon receipt. Follow standard disinfection or sterilization practice before initiating clinical use. DO NOT STEAM STERILIZE THE VETERINARY ENDOSCOPE. WARNING: The user of this instrument should be thoroughly informed with the contents of this manual prior to using the instrument. The operator should also be knowledgeable of the procedure and related hazards availing himself/herself of adequate training in the use of this instrument prior to use. Failure to achieve adequate training and familiarization with the manual contents could result in damage to the instrument and/or injury to the patient and/or user. However, its flexibility also makes it a delicate instrument requiring proper handling to ensure satisfactory performance and prevent accidental damage. 1.1 HANDLING THE VFS-8 FLEXIBLE VETERINARY ENDOSCOPE The VFS-8 is a delicate optical instrument that must be carefully handled at all times. The image is transmitted through fibers that run the length of the flexible insertion shaft. These fibers will break under extreme flexing or bending. Fiber breakage can be greatly reduced by proper handling. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DEFLECT THE SHAFT OF THE VFS-8 WITH A DEFLECTING WIRE GUIDE DEVICE. THIS MAY CAUSE BREAKAGE 2

3 OF THE IMAGE BUNDLE. EICKEMEYER WILL NOT WARRANTY AGAINST SUCH DAMAGE. DO NOT BEND IN A RADIUS OF LESS THAN 2. DO NOT FORCE THE INSTRUMENT AGAINST RESISTANCE. DO NOT STORE THE INSTRUMENT IN ITS CARRYING CASE. DO NOT ATTEMPT SELF REPAIR. ONLY AUTHORIZED EICKEMEYER PERSONNEL CAN COMPLETE REPAIRS. 1.2 INSPECTION Visually inspect the endoscope for damage or wear before every use. Pay particular attention to the integrity of the insertion shaft by observing for cuts, holes, or protrusions. Manually irrigate the operating channel to ensure patency. (See Section 2.4 for irrigating instructions.) 4 2.1 PREPARING THE LIGHT SOURCE The detachable light guide supplied with the VFS-8 is recommended for use with an 80 or 150 watt illuminator only. Using this light guide with other illuminators may damage the light guide tip. 1. For complete operating instructions, refer to light source manual. 2. Set illuminator on a firm, flat surface. 3. Plug power cord into appropriate electrical outlet. 2.2 CONNECTING LIGHT GUIDE The VFS-8 has a detachable light guide with an ACMI coupling end. It is completely immersible to facilitate complete cleaning and disinfection of the instrument. 1. Attach female end of light guide to male fitting on side of endoscope handle. It should snap on securely. 2. Insert light guide connector securely into air/light source (EICKEMEYER Illuminator 1185U) 3. Make certain light guide adapter (p/n ) supplied with illuminator is in place in the light guide connection (FIG 4) and secured with the thumb screw. For use with other illuminators: Connect light guide end-tip directly to ACMI illuminators. Use appropriate adapters for other manufacturers light sources. 2.3 EYEPIECE ADJUSTMENT Rotate focus adjustment ring until image is in sharpest possible focus to accommodate your own eyesight. 2.4 IRRIGATION AND USE OF ACCESSORY INLET VALVE The channel inlet located on the endoscope handle features a female luer fitting that allows for connection of a 10 or 20cc syringe of and Accessory Inlet Valve with Side Port (Side Arm Fitting) p/n for irrigation and passage of accessories. (Figure 2) FIGURE 2 A replaceable luer cap (p/n ) covers channel inlet when not in use. The luer cap is perforated to allow passage of accessories while maintaining some seal to minimize leakage. The passage of a guide wire or other stiff accessory through a new luer cap prior to use will often facilitate the passage of more flexible accessories. The accessory inlet valve provided with this instrument is disposable and intended for single use. To reorder, contact EICKEMEYER customer service. 4

5 3.0 OPERATINg ThE FLExIBLE ENDOSCOPE 3.1 HOLDING THE VFS-8 The VFS-8 Flexible Endoscope is designed for comfortable use with either hand. The free hand is used to advance the instrument, inject fluids, or medication, or pass accessories. 3.2 PROCEDURAL CONSIDERATIONS ALWAYS ADJUST EYEPIECE SO FOCUS IS SHARP BEFORE INSERTING THE ENDOSCOPE. ADVANCE ENDOSCOPE ONLY UNDER DIRECT VISION. NEVER FORCE ENDOSCOPE IF RESISTANCE IS ENCOUNTERED DURING AN EXAMINATION. ADVANCE INSTRUMENT CAREFULLY USING SHORT STROKES TO AVOID BREAKAGE. 3.3 DEALING WITH A BLURRY IMAGE The view should appear sharp, bright, and distinct. The operator may not, however, on initial entry, a hazy, unclear, red-tinged image quality. At this point, patience is required on the part of the examiner. Usually after minimal irrigation, the image should clear and an excellent view of the area will be obtained. 4.0 USE OF ACCESSORIES To pass a stone basket or other accessory, first be sure the accessory circumference and length are appropriate. If EICKEMEYER Accessory Inlet Valve is used, accessories can be passed via the adjustable screw type adapter while irrigant is administered through its side port. Avoid excessive tightening of the screw adapter, as this may kink or damage the accessory. For information regarding the availability and application of specific accessories for endoscopes, contact EICKEMEYER or the individual accessory manufacturer. As a general guideline: 1. Use standard, stringent practice in the care and cleaning of multiple-use accessories that are so labeled. 2. Do not reuse any accessories that are intended for single use only. 3. Do not insert sharp or pointed accessories. Sheaths should be used to avoid damage to the internal channel of the endoscope. 5.0 PhOTOgRAPhY The VFS-8 Flexible Endoscope is suitable for use with both automatic exposure and manual photography. 5.1 ATTACHING THE 35 MM CAMERA ADAPTER. 5

6 EICKEMEYER Camera Adapter (p/n B404408) is used to couple the 35mm camera to the endoscope. Screw the adapter into the front of any camera lens having a standard 49 or 52mm ring thread. Use the appropriate step-down adapter ring for lenses having different size filter ring threads. To attach camera and adapter to endoscope eyepiece: 1. Preset eyepiece on endoscope by turning focusing ring until slight click is felt. This indicated proper eyepiece position for photography. 2. Open camera adapter by turning locking ring counterclockwise. Place adapter over eyepiece of endoscope and secure in place by releasing locking ring. 5.2 MANUAL SHUTTER CONTROL 35MM PHOTOGRAPHY 1. Using a 50mm lens, the lens aperture should be fully open (represented by the smallest f-stop number) when using a camera in the manual mode. 2. With the illuminator (150 watt) set at highest setting, the recommended range of shutter speed settings is from 1/60 seconds to 1/15 seconds. 3. If the resulting pictures appear under-exposed, use a slower shutter speed; if over-exposed, use a faster shutter speed. at maximum setting, the recommended range of shutter speed settings would be 1/15 to ½ sec., using 400 ASA film. 4. Experiment with test situations as near as possible to the expected conditions, making exposure through the full range of shutter adjustment. One or two rolls of film invested for the purpose will pay great dividends. 5.2 ADAPTING TO VIDEO CAMERAS The VFS-8 standard eyepiece easily attaches to most video cameras for viewing and documentation. 6.0 RECOmmENDED COLD DISINFECTINg SOLUTIONS Glutaraldehyde - Cidex (Not Cidex 7 or Cidex Plus), Glutarex, or Sporicidin Iodophor Wescodyne 1. The above materials are considered safe to use on EICKEMEYER Flexible Endoscopes IF used according to manufacturer s instructions for disinfection. These solutions are very aggressive, and failure to follow the disinfection cycles precisely, including complete cleaning and rinsing, may result in lens pitting or adhesive degradation over time. 2. EICKEMEYER is not responsible for damage when solutions other than the above are used. 6

7 3. EICKEMEYER makes no claims regarding the effectiveness of cold disinfecting solutions. Follow manufacturer s recommendations for disinfection only. 7.0 CLEANINg AND DISINFECTINg PROCEDURE CLEAN IMMEDIATELY AFTER USE. 1. Detach light guide and remove black luer cap, if used. 2. Gently wash endoscope handle, shaft, light guide, and luer cap using a mild soap solution. Both endoscope and light guide are immersible for thorough cleaning; however, AVOID pulling or stripping motions that may damage the shaft and lightguide sheathing. 3. Use a syringe, irrigate the channel with 20cc soap solution, then clear water. 4. Use supplied cleaning brush insert wire end first down working channel. Pull bristled end through channel grasping the wire. 5. Repeat the above two steps three times. 6. Prepare disinfecting solution according to manufacturer s specifications. Gently inject the solution into the channel until it is completely filled. NOTE: ONLY THOSE DISINFECTING SOLUTIONS RECOMMENDED FOR USE ON EICKEMEYER ENDOSCOPES MAY BE USED. EXPOSURES TO THE DISINFECTANT SHOULD BE LIMITED TO MINUTES MAXIMUM. 1. Totally immerse the instrument and light guide in prepared disinfectant for the recommended time period. 2. Remove and rinse thoroughly with clear water. Flush copious amounts of water in order to remove all traces of disinfectant. 3. Dry well with gauze pads, and by instilling a small amount of air through the channel. 4. Replace black luer cap. PERIODICALLY: Clean eyepiece lens and distal end-tip gently, using a cotton tipped swab moistened with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Scrupulous attention to cleaning endoscope and accessories after use greatly contributes to the maintenance of good working condition of the instrument and to the effectiveness of disinfection and/or sterilization practices. 8.0 STERILIZATION Thorough mechanical cleaning and drying of the endoscope and its accessories are prerequisites to sterilization. The endoscope and its accessories may be gas sterilized following the sterilizing equipment manufacturer s procedures. DO NOT EXCEED 130 F. OR 10 P.S.I. DO NOT STEAM STERILIZE THE ENDOSCOPE OR ITS ACCESSORIES. REMOVE LUER CAP PRIOR TO STERILIZING. 9.0 STORAgE The VFS-8 can be stored on a flat, protected surface, in a clean dry area such as a closed cabinet or drawer. 7

8 NEVER STORE THE VFS-8 IN THE CARRYING CASE ACCESSORIES, PARTS, AND REPAIR For accessories and replacement parts available with the instrument, refer to the current price list. DO NOT ATTEMPT SELF REPAIR OF THIS INSTRUMENT. FOR ANY ABNORMALITIES IN APPEARANCE OR FUNCTION OF THIS INSTRUMENT, CONTACT EICKEMEYER SERVICE DEPARTMENT.
