1 Work and Watch the Olympics! HOW CLEVER PEOPLE WORK AND WATCH THE OLYMPICS! THE GUIDE Work is simply no excuse for missing your chance to attend the London Olympic Games this summer. And if your boss doesn't think so, this guide will help you show whose boss when it comes being every bit as productive as you would be in the office. WARNING: This guide isn't a trickster's handbook, but we aim to show how remote working is easy, reliable and productive. If you are working at the Olympics, you will need to focus, actually do your work, and ensure your own responsibility when it comes to your contractual obligations. However, if your company allows remote working, why does that mean you should stay at home? STEP 1 TECH YOU NEED - APPS! Smartphone, laptop or tablet mobile device (with 3G and wireless internet access). We suggestion trying some of the tech we've found here. We can't guarantee all these products will be plain sailing, but our experience shows most of them will get you working virtually and dramatically more flexibly. These apps are simply suggestions, but remember there are dozens of apps that all do the same thing and may even be free.. So feel free to search around, and if you find a better, cheaper, or more user friendly app let us know. Access all your normal office documents on your mobile phone or tablet : Quickoffice Pro HD edit office documents & view PDF files Access and create all your MicrosoftOffice document, spreadsheet, and presentation on your ipad, plus PDFs. SHARE ALL YOUR OFFICE DOCUMENTS WITH YOUR WORKFORCE Dropbox ipad, iphone - FREE Dropbox is a free service that means any file you save to your Dropbox will automatically save to all your computers, your iphone and ipad, and it can share them with colleagues. BOX - any device - FREE Box provides simple, secure content sharing from anywhere, on any device. It also offers secure file transfer for sensitive information. WHAT IF I'VE FORGOTTEN SOMETHING ON MY DESKTOP COMPUTER? LogMeIn ipad, iphone - FREE STEP 2 STAYING CONNECTED AT THE OLYMPIC PARK -3G AND WIFI Check out our Olympic Park Map below for help with signal, but these gadgets will get you ahead of most users, and give you an advantage over most domestic devices. Remember there will be FREE WIFI at many London Underground stations, an ideal time to get ahead on some work before hitting the Games. Some clever 3G and WIFI boosting gadgets that could help. Your best bet to improve signal is to get a boosted external antenna for your 3G wireless laptop dongle. 3 CloudOn itunes, Google play - FREE Pama Plug N Go Power Universal Portable Charger Olympic Park Mobile Phone MAP BT say they are providing free WIFI access throughout the Olympic park from four hubs, but have revealed limited information about this service. If you are a BT Broadband customer, you can get free use of WIFI hotspots around the Park. 3G should provide adequate service for most documents work, and file sharing. The map below gives an idea of the position of many of the mobile phone masts serving the park. Mobile providers say the Park is covered by service, but if there are signal difficulties stick to the areas closer to masts to ensure a better signal. 4 STEP 3 HOW TO LOOK LIKE YOU'RE WORKING NORMALLY Send pre-written s automatically You can schedule when s are sent, which allows you to continue working around Olympic events, let's say when a race is on. So sit back, relax, enjoy the race knowing you've typed your s when convenient or when you re most productive. Yet you appear to working all the time. TIP: Microsoft Outlook has a built in scheduler -click the more options in the options tab and chose Delay Delivery. If you don't use Outlook try Boomerang for Gmail Free downloadable add-on -You need Chrome/Firefox web browsers Automated response All clients allow you to use auto-respond messages. These are useful for ensuring your clients get a response, but you can choose which are the most important s to deal with and when. Mute Button Make sure you have your finger ready on your phone's in-call mute button to black out unwanted noises e.g. crowd roaring at a spectacular moment, a loud uncontrollable neighbouring spectator etc. OTHER USEFUL STUFF (FOR KICKS!) NO event tickets? No problem London 2012 has dedicated area featuring giant screens and picnic lawns for up to 10,000 fans at a time. Located in the lawned area between the Riverbank Arena and Copper Box on one side of the River Lea, and the Velodrome and Basketball Arena on the other, these live sites include a 250-acre Parkland, for quieter working. You will need tickets - Up to four tickets per person will be available to be booked in advance for entry in to Live Hyde Park or Live Victoria Park before 2pm on a specified day.
