1 ios5.1.0 UPDATE INSTRUCTIONS BELTON ISD These instructions are made for Belton ISD teachers and staff to update ipads and computers to ios5. If you sync with your home machine, you may update there. The best solution is for you to update to ios5 with the computer you sync the device with. Depending on the number of devices, apps, data and photos you have, this process will vary in length from 30 minutes to a couple of hours. Make sure you have the time to sit through this. You will want to be nearby as the update progresses. 1. INSTALL itunes 10.5 If you sync with school Dell computer, please remember that you have Kaspersky antivirus software loaded. Go to the red and black K on the bottomright of your taskbar. Right-click and choose EXIT. Go to Download and install the latest version of itunes (10.5) Uncheck the ME NEW box on itunes. Uncheck the KEM ME UP TO DATE box. Don t fill in an address. Click DOWNLOAD NOW. Click RUN when prompted after the download. Click NEXT. Uncheck AUTOMATICALLY UPDATE ITUNES AND OTHER APPLE SOFTWARE. Click INSTALL This process takes about 10 minutes.

2 After itunes is installed, gather your devices for the next part. Restart your computer. 2. TRANSFER YOUR PURCHASES In order to make sure you have all your apps backed up on your computer, you ll need to complete this step. Plug in an idevice (ipad, ipod, iphone) IMPORTANT: If it gives you the message that you need to update the device, click CANCEL. You ll update later. In itunes, go to FILE and choose TRANSFER PURCHASES FROM (NAME OF YOUR DEVICE). If you have never synced to the computer, you ll see this message. Click AUTHORIZE, then OK. You are allowed to authorize 5 computers, so choose wisely! You ll have to log in to itunes to complete this step if you have not already done so. You ll see the apps you have not synced coming over. If you have your devices set to auto-sync, you may not have much transfer to the computer at this stage.

3 If you have never synced to this computer before, it will take a while depending on the amount of apps you have. NOTE: If you have multiple itunes accounts on your device, you ll need to go to the itunes Store, click on STORE, click on AUTHORIZE THIS COMPUTER. Sign in as your other account and then transfer purchases again. Turn on AUTOMATIC DOWNLOADS for this computer and choose NOT NOW. 3. BACK UP YOUR FILES Keep your device plugged into the computer for this. If you have created any work on your ipad, you ll want to save it before updating. You can do this two ways. a. any important files to yourself. Each application on the device gives you the option to . You may also pictures or save them in an online library such as Picasa. b. Use itunes to back up and save large amounts of files. To do this, follow these steps: 1) On the ipad, go to an app where you have saved files, such as Pages. 2) Click on the WRENCH.

4 3) Choose SHARE AND PRINT. 4) Choose the option to SEND TO ITUNES. Depending on the file, you may be able to save it in multiple formats (Word, PDF, Pages, etc.). 5) Repeat as often as necessary to save your important files. 6) On your computer, go to itunes. Log in if you have not. 7) Click on the NAME OF YOUR DEVICE on the left side of the itunes window. 8) Click on the APPS tab at the top of the page. 9) Scroll down and select an app where you know you have files. (In the example below, Carl chose AudioNote to see what files were on his ipad in that App. 10) Highlight all the files you want to save (hold down SHIFT and select them). 11) Click SAVE TO and choose where you would like to save the files on your computer or home folder.

5 4. BACKING UP YOUR PHOTOS Unless you have set your device to Auto-Sync, you should back up the photos you want to save from your device. ON A PC Click on MY COMPUTER. Find the your device in itunes on the left column of itunes. Double-click on the name of your device. You will see a list of all your photos and videos in the camera roll of the device. Select the ones you want to save. Drag and drop them into a folder on your computer. NOTE: You can select multiple files at once by clicking on the first one, and then holding down shift and clicking on the last one. You can also choose specific pictures by holding the CTRL key and clicking on the ones you want to save. On a MAC Open iphoto. Choose IMPORT. Drag pictures to a folder in MY PHOTOS inside of MY DOCUMENTS. OTHER ITEMS TO CHECK: NOTES These are usually synced with an account; however, so me are set to stay on the device. You can check by going to NOTES and clicking on ACCOUNTS. If you have any that say ON THIS DEVICE, then you need to then to yourself to guarantee they are backed up. PASSWORDS Make sure you take note of your passwords for any apps that require a password as you might be required to log back in after the update. 5. ENCRYPT A BACKUP

6 As a final step, you will encrypt a backup via itunes. 1) Connect your device if you have disconnected it. 2) Click on the device name in itunes. 3) Click on SUMMARY at the top if it is not chosen. 4) Scroll down to see OPTIONS. 5) Check the OPTION box that says ENCRYPT BACKUP. (If you don t see that option, click SYNC. 6) CREATE A PASSWORD FOR THE BACKUP FILE. 7) Your encrypted backup file will be created. This takes up to a few minutes depending on what you have on the ipad.

7 You may be asked to HELP APPLE IMPROVE. You may choose to participate or say NO THANKS. CONGRATULATIONS! YOU HAVE BACKED UP! UPDATE Before you get started on this section, make sure your device has at least 30% battery life so that it can complete the process. Depending on the amount of photos and apps and the speed of your computer, this could take over an hour.

9 Click on AGREE. Your device may turn off and on a couple of times during this process. You will get a message telling you that the ipad has been restored to factory settings and it will disappear from the list. You will then be prompted for your encrypted password that you set up during the backup stage. Enter your password and your device will begin to be restored from the backup.

10 NOTE: If you receive an error message, click SET UP AS A NEW ipad. NAME IT. Uncheck SYNC MUSIC. Click DONE. Following the restore, you will receive this message. After the device appears in itunes again, you many disconnect it from the computer. Now all we have to do is set up the device to make sure it s just like you want it. POST UPDATE PROCESS-These steps take place on the device. Click on ENABLE LOCATION SERVICES. Click NEXT in the top right-hand corner. Choose your network of choice. If you are in the district, you will choose BeltonISD. You will see a login screen. Use your normal computer login and password.

11 SIGN IN with your APPLE ID. You will need to click on AGREE and then click on AGREE a second time. HINT: You don t need to have it SEND BY unless you want to read it later. You will then receive a message saying that this will take a few minutes. The next section deals with icloud, a free feature that backs up to 5GB of your data including files, photos, apps, music, contacts and more. If you have more than 5GB of files to store, you will have to pay for the extra storage. Using the icloud is optional. You may turn it on now or later. One advantage of icloud is wirelessly syncing to your computer. Make your selection and click NEXT.

12 If you choose icloud, you will see a screen asking if you want to back up to your computer or icloud. If you choose BACK UP TO MY COMPUTER, it will do so wirelessly. If you choose icloud, you will need to watch for memory usage, as you will likely need to purchase more storage. Make your choice and click NEXT. The next box that pops up is FIND MY IPAD. You may use this feature or not. If you use it, it will enable you to locate your ipad by going to on a computer. You can even lock or wipe the device remotely if it is stolen. Choose and click NEXT.

13 On the next screen, we recommend leaving choosing DON T SEND as you will save battery life by not sending Diagnostic and Usage data to Apple. However, if you are okay with a little less battery life, feel free to do this in order to help improve the product. Choose and click NEXT. Now CONNECT YOUR DEVICE TO YOUR COMPUTER AND OPEN ITUNES. Click on the device name in itunes. Go to the APPS TAB. Depending on how often you sync with your computer, you may or may not see all of your apps. They are still on your machine, though, so you can go sync them right now.

14 Check the box that says SYNC APPS. You will see your apps. You may see a warning like the one below that says your existing apps will be deleted. That is fine. Go ahead and SYNC APPS. Go through and check the box next to the apps your want on your device. (Unfortunately, there is not a way to just select all here.) You may want to move the apps into folders in this itunes window. Many people find it easier to do this here than on the ipad. To move an app, click and hold down the mouse on the app you want to move. You can move it into folders, onto a different page, or create folders by dragging one app on top of another app. Once you have them where you want them, click APPLY.

15 App Updates - You ll also likely now have a lot of apps wanting to be updated to the new version. Go to the App Store -> Updates and Update All. Disclaimer: While this guide covers everything we could think to cover, there may be issues specific to your accounts or device that are not covered here. That is why the BACKUP section is so detailed. Many people hit UPDATE and don t use the backup with no problems. However, the BACKUP is a fail-safe for any important items you need to save.
