2 3GPP 5G umbrella item Study on New Services and Markets Technology Enablers (SMARTER) is the umbrella work item that is guiding the 5G activity in 3GPP. Objective was to develop use cases and potential requirements for 5G 2

3 3GPP 5G NR (New Radio) The RAN working group has identified embb (Enhanced Mobile Broadband) as a priority feature under which the 5G New Radio (NR) is being developed in Release 15 LTE Advanced Pro 1 was defined within Rel 13, but the standardization didn t stop there. Further enhancements have been introduced in Rel 14 and recently started Rel 15. The normative work for the first phase of 5G system specification has started just recently within Rel 15 targeting freeze date of September Non-Standalone (NSA) 5G NR will utilize the existing LTE radio and core network as an anchor for mobility management and coverage while adding a new 5G carrier. This is the configuration that will be the target of early 2019 deployments (in 3GPP terminology, this is NSA 5G NR deployment scenario Option 3). Standalone (SA) 5G NR implies full user and control plane capability for 5G NR, utilizing the new 5G core network architecture also being done in 3GPP. 3

11 5G Interoperability issues Interoperability. It s been touted as the key to unlocking the possibilities of 5G. So it makes sense that 3GPP is working to bake it in to the next generation specifications and groups working on virtualization including ONAP have embraced the idea of open standards. But despite the hype, there are concerns that 5G could also hit the same roadblocks as its predecessor. 11

12 5G Interoperability issues Initial 5G rollouts are expected to happen in urban areas first, with the rest of the network supported by a 4G backbone. It s this setup that creates a sticky situation; while 5G is supposed to be interoperable, a handful of equipment vendors dominate the 4G market and have a strangle hold on operators courtesy of proprietary innovations on the Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) platform. CPRI was meant to be an interoperable interface for all as well. But then some radio vendors expanded on those specs with features, for example, in areas like operations and maintenance and signaling, essentially closing those systems back up again. 12

13 5G Interoperability issues The existing interface makes it very difficult for a virtualized network function based software companies to make a play in that market space. 5G will be significantly more software driven, so it is expected to bring in a lot more creativity as well as new software companies into the fray. This is leading to disaggregation in the traditional telecom business Legacy hardware vendors won t play nice with new companies offering their own virtualized network functions (VNFs). Which could stifle creativity and impair operators ability to run the most cost effective networks possible. 13

14 5G Interoperability issues Cloud native network functions would closely work with some of the existing Big data and analytics platforms which can replace traditional BSS/OSS and SON functionalities Defining some of these interfaces for a common industry understanding is critical for the success of a software based 5G network. The key challenge in realizing a software based 5G network will be in specifying flexible interoperability specifications around key layers 14
