3 1 Module Title Studio and Location Sound Production 2 Module Code N Level 6 4 Credit Value 1 credit Purpose This module is a statement of the standards to be achieved to gain an FETAC credit in Studio and Location Sound Production for Film and Video at Level 6. The module is designed to teach location sound recording and multi-track studio recording to a professional level. 6 Preferred Entry Level None. 7 Special Requirements None. 8 General Aims Learners who successfully complete this module will: 8.1 be able to set up a public address and monitoring system for playback purposes 8.2 be able to operate a multi track recording set up in a recording studio 8.3 have a good understanding of digital audio workstation software similar to what is used for editing radio programmes 8.4 be able to operate a portable recording set-up for location recording 8. have a good understanding of microphone positioning and the differences between various microphones. 3

4 9 Units The specific learning outcomes are grouped into 4 units. Unit 1 Unit 2 Unit 3 Unit 4 Location Sound Recording Live Sound Studio Recording Audio Editing 10 Specific Learning Outcomes Unit 1 Location Sound Recording Learners should be able to: assemble suitable recording equipment for recording sound on a film shoot record the sound at a suitable recording level record the sound free of any distortion listen to the recordings with a critical ear organise suitable documentation for the recording session. Unit 2 Live Sound Learners should be able to: demonstrate a good working knowledge of a mixing desk assemble a small public address system use suitable types of cable for hooking the different pieces of equipment display a good working knowledge of a small public address system meet all safe working practices. 4

5 Unit 3 Studio Recording Learners should be able to: use a multi-track recording studio to layer and mix a composition record the sound at a suitable recording level record the sound free of any distortions listen to the recordings with a critical ear organise suitable documentation for the recording session. Unit 4 Audio Editing Learners should be able to: assemble various audio sections into a free flowing piece of audio organise suitable documentation for the editing session have a clear understanding of the various audio formats have a good understanding of the editing software display a good understanding of all the processes involved. 11 Portfolio of Assessment Please refer to the glossary of assessment techniques and the note on assessment principles at the end of this module descriptor. All assessment is carried out in accordance with FETAC regulations. Assessment is devised by the internal assessor, with external moderation by FETAC. Summary Project 0% Skills Demonstration 30% Written Examination 20%

6 11.1 Project The internal assessor will devise a project brief that requires candidates to demonstrate their ability to record sound on a film location and in a recording studio using multi track recording. Each candidate will record two compositions. The compositions can be either a piece of music or a short film of between 3 and 10 minutes duration Skills Demonstration The candidate will demonstrate skills acquired in the following areas of technical expertise sound editing, location sound recording and setting up a public address system for playback Examination The internal assessor will devise a Theory-Based examination. The examination will be 1 hour 30 minutes in duration. The format of the examination will be as follows: Section A: Short Answer Questions. 12 questions, 10 to be answered, 1 mark per question Section B: Structured Questions. 3 questions, 2 to be answered, marks per question. 12 Grading Pass 0-64% Merit 6-79% Distinction % 6
