The design and development of a smart monitoring and controlling for household electrical appliance in real time has been reported in this project. The aim of this project is to know the electrical parameters of household appliances such as voltage, current and thereby calculating the power consumed. In this, control mechanism of appliances also implemented via creating android application, which helps to monitor each and every load individually to know their power consumption. In the proposed system the short circuit can be detected using short circuit detector and LDR sensor is used for automatic ON/OFF lights based on intensity of working place. Through GSM the message is sent to mobile informing power consumption of each load and control is done in remote by creating popup window. Keywords Power Management, Domestic Appliances, Power Control, Wireless Sensor Network, GSM, Android. I. INTRODUCTION In today s world, power cries play an important role. The demand for power keeps on increasing even though production remains constant. The only way to conserve the energy is through the means that are available. There are many ways in which energy can be conserved. One method is by priorities to the load which are used frequently. The latest technology is the use of solar panels to harvest the power which plays vital role in day to day life. Another method is to manage the power utilized for domestic appliances in every house by wireless sensor network. This can be achieved by calculating the electrical parameters such as voltage, current ratings consumed by each and every load instantaneously. This project focuses on human friendly technical solutions for monitoring and easy control of household appliances. Wireless sensor networks have become increasing important because of their ability to monitor and manage the situational information for various intelligent services. Due to these advantages Wireless Sensor networks has been applied in many fields such as military, industry, environmental monitoring and healthcare. The WSNs are increasingly being used in the home for energy controlling services. Regular household appliances are monitored and controlled by WSNs installed in home. New technologies including cutting, edge advancements in technologies, sensors, metering, transmission, distribution, storage technology, as well as providing new information and flexibility both consumers and providers of electricity. The GSM, wireless communication platform is presenting examining the home wireless system implication by evaluating the use of GSM frequencies. II. RELATED WORK In this section, the existing works about smart home systems based on wireless communication technology has been discussed. Thoraya Obaid et al. [7] proposed voice controlled wireless smart home system for elderly and disabled people. The proposed system has two main components namely (a) voice recognition system, and (b) wireless system. Lab View software has been used to implement the voice recognition system. On the other hand, ZigBee wireless modules have been used to implement the wireless system. The main goal of this system is to control home appliances by using voice commands. This system can recognize the voice commands, convert them into the required data format and send the data through the wireless transmitter. Based on the received data at the wireless receiver associated with the appliances desired switching operations are performed. This system is a low cost and low power system because ZigBee is used. Benjamin et al. [2] suggested overall design of a wireless home automation system (WHAS) which has been built and implemented. The automation centres on recognition of voice commands and uses low-power RF ZigBee wireless communication modules which are relatively cheap. The home automation system is intended to control all lights and electrical appliances in a home or office using voice commands. The system has been tested and verified. The verification tests included voice recognition response test, indoor ZigBee communication test. The tests involved a mix of 10 male and female 44

2 subjects with different Indian languages. 7 different voice commands were sent by each person. Thus the test involved sending a total of 70 commands and 80.05% of these commands were recognized correctly. Pankaj et al. [8] projected a home automation systems which provides mutual interoperability between various electronic, electrical, and power devices as well as interactive interface for people to control their operation. These features are very helpful to optimize and to economize energy consumption whereby saved energy during some few years could make more money than home automation systems implementation cost. These technologies make peoples life also easier, especially for elderly persons and persons with disabilities. These systems exist of course, but there are many noninteroperable, expensive, and often wired systems. Wiring complicates implementation of the home automation in buildings which are already built. Faisal Baig et al. [9] talks Home automation is a wide and varied field that involves devices as small as temperature, light and motion sensor, and as powerful as modern home appliances. In today s world technology is available for home automation but these technologies are incompatible with each other and addresses only communication and physical media. The main objective of this work is to facilitate the user to control appliances by two ways one is remotely via voice command, second is using remote control to control the appliances which is also an override control. In this a method is devised which control the home appliances through voice commands. For that purpose a mobile application is developed that convert the user voice command into SMS and send through GSM network. Nausheen et al. [5] paper is to design an automation system that is used to switch ON, OFF and get to know status of the home appliances by using computer with ZigBee wireless technology. ZigBee is a new technology, whose goal is to eliminate wired connections between electrical appliances and computer. Instead of connecting with wires, every electrical appliance has small zigbee. The home appliances are connected to the ports of the microcontroller board and their status are passed to the home server. The combination of NetBeans and Embedded C is used for monitoring and controlling software. The home Appliances can be monitored and accessed remotely by user via SMS or where GSM Modem comes into use. Multi-vendor appliances can be added to the system with no major changes and hence system is scalable. Password protection is one of the functionality of the system so that unauthorized user can be denied from accessing home appliances. Another important feature is the security system that will continuously monitor the status of home appliances and take adequate actions if required. The major drawbacks of the existing model are: i)an intrusive and expensive wired installation and the use of Pc is required. ii)the manual readings were taken about power consumed. iii)manual operation is done for switching ON/OFF the appliance. iv)web server is used in the reception for which the availability of internet is necessary. III. SYSTEM IMPLEMENTATION The system which has been proposed monitors and controls the appliances used for domestic purposes. The developed system has the following distinct features. They are: 1.FLEXIBILITY: Household Appliances are controlled i) Remotely ii)automatically iii)manually by relay driving circuits. 2. ANDROID APPLICATION: The parameters such as voltage, current, power are displayed by creating popup window in android application. 3. GSM: Global System for Mobile Communication is used to transfer the data s to and from the sensing area and user. The proposed system consists of a potential transformer, current transformer, short circuit detector, LDR sensor, GSM and Relay. Android application is developed to monitor and control how much current each load consumed. The LDR is Light Dependent resistor for automatic turn ON and OFF operation. The short circuit detector is used to sense high and low voltage signal in the supply. The current and voltage rating is obtained by current and potential transformer. The turn ON and OFF of loads can be done by relay via relay driver circuits. These electrical parameters can be monitored by the user via handheld device such as mobiles by creating an android application with the help of JAVA,.XML and Eclipse.JAVA and Eclipse are open source software platform in which an application can be built effectively. The.XML is Extensible Markup Language which is used for sending and receiving the data such as electrical parameters, short circuit detection, automatic turn ON and OFF operation, Power rating of each load. These dada are provided to user to perform the control operation from various places via GSM module which is utilized in this Power Management and Control process. Thus, if the user is not available in current location, they can monitor the status of their domestic appliances which is very convenient and able to perform control operations too. The design and development of a smart sensing for domestic appliances has been reported in this project. The developed system is a low cost and flexible in operation. Thus one can save electricity expenses. This concept can be built in realtime situations because experimental results will be encouraging. The simulation result of the proposed system is done using PROTEUS software and the data is displayed using virtual terminal. 45

3 STATE 2: CURRENT VARIATIONS The various current values are displayed using PROTEUS software. In addition to the potential transformer consisting of Operational Amplifier, Diode, Differential Amplifier and filter circuits, Zener Diode is used to build the Current Transformer. The purpose of zener diode is that for any input signal, it produces output in terms of voltage for certain value which is essential to drive the controller. Fig.1. Functional block diagram of the system IV.SIMULATION OUTPUT PROTEUS (Processes and Transactions Editable by Users) is a model for constructing clinical workflows with integrated decision support. The workflows are constructed with entities Components. For this project, Proteus software is used for animated simulation. STATE 1: VOLTAGE VARIATIONS The various voltage variations are displayed by varying the potential transformer consisting of Operational Amplifier, Diode, Differential Amplifier and filter circuits. These components are used to avoid the ripples and to provide maximum output to drive the controller. Based upon the increment and decrement option, the voltage of circuit can be modified in a respective way as required for the appliances. Fig.3. Current variations STATE 3: LOAD VARIATIONS The various status of the three loads are displayed by turning ON and OFF the loads in simulation by the coding dumped into the controller. The three loads are named as L1, L2 and L3.Thus in hardware this can be achieved by electromechanical switches called Relays via relay driving circuit which are NPN transistor. Fig.2. 4 Fig.4. Load variations STATE 4: MODE CHANGES Mode change is achieved by varying the switch which his connected to the PIC controller. The two modes are Automode and Manual mode. The modes of the Light Dependent Resistor are displayed by moving the LDR Torch in the simulation. Two modes are created namely DAY and NIGHT mode. Based upon the coding, the mode changes either from DAY to NIGHT mode or NIGHT to DAY mode. In real time, based upon the intensity available in surrounding it automatically provide turn ON and OFF operation by means manual or auto mode. Fig.6. Night Mode change V.CONCLUSION AND FUTURE WORK This paper describes a novel method for saving the energy to overcome power crisis. With advancement of technology things are becoming simpler and easier for us. Automation is the use of control systems and information technologies to reduce the need for human work in the production of goods and services. The communication of home is only through the SMS which has been tested with the mobile networks and is working on any mobile network. By this project I have stepped one step further to the future. There are various parameters which can be adjusted in this software. The developed GSM based system gives good response to the sensor and sends SMS when it detects the supply is increased above desired level. Besides, it can send a message to the user for action when the owner is out of station and the home is locked which helps us to keep more secure of our home. Moreover, owner can control loads (on/off) automatically by mobile using GSM technology from anywhere. This project will have a large effect to the living standard of human being. In the system, a lot of other features can be added to the user's requirement depending upon the situation. This system is practically easy to use and user friendly so it have a good future. It is cheap to build so it can be industrially produced and served in the market. The future inclusion of this paper includes: A. Password Locking System: Fig.5.Day Mode changes This system ensured a safe locking system. On seeing from outside the lock would not be visible but this inbuilt locking system ensures security. This lock can be opened and closed with the help of a password which we will give using a keypad. The door will only open or close only if the password is correct. The lock cannot be broken because to the person 47

5 standing outside can just see the closed door and not the lock as it is inbuilt. The password is given with the help of controller and can be changed by simply making a small change in the program for security purpose as we change pin in debit card. B. Counter dependent automatic switching system of room: After opening the lock when the person enters the room the counter gets incremented. If it is a day then the lights would not be switched on but if it is dark then the lights will automatically switch on. Whatever the number of people entering the room the counter will automatically get incremented by itself and on leaving the room the counter will get decremented but the system will keep on working.once the counter is zero or once everyone leaves the room the switching system will automatically stop working. C. Temperature controlled cooling system: Once the person has entered the room he would not require to switch on anything everything will just happen automatically. Like if the temperature is high then the fan will switch on, on its own. Else it will remain in off state. This temperature is predefined in the controller. But this system will only work if there is a person in the room or if the counter is not zero. D. Light saving system: This light saving system is used in two places for internal section and external section. If a person is not at home or sitting inside the room and it is dark outside then the lights will automatically get switched on and when its day the light will get switched off.
