AROONA-POL Renovation in Passive Optical LAN, without fiber recabling Facilitate POL adoption for refurbishment by eliminating backbone fiber recabling CAILabs - AROONA-POL - 01/09/2016 1
2 CAILabs - AROONA-POL - 01/09/2016
Passive Optical LAN How to lower fiber cabling CAPEX? POL is the future of LAN implementation... Passive Optical LAN is an attractive, long-term LAN architecture that outperforms traditional Ethernet LAN in capacity, installation and operational cost, energy savings, infrastructure footprint and security. It benefits from the Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) technology for access networks and brings fiber-speed connections to the desktop. 40% to 60% CAPEX and OPEX savings compared to traditional LANs... but recabling of backbone / vertical fibers may be deterrent to POL adoption Cabling expenses represent 30 to 50 % of POL installation costs. Such initial investment may be a strong disincentive, especially for renovating and upgrading an existing network. Not being able to reuse the existing cabling infrastructure is an obstacle in adopting POL. Up to 85% of campus backbone fiber links are long MMFs, incompatible with GPON equipment Traditional Ethernet LAN Backbone links between core and access or distribution switches are still largely in multi-mode fiber (MMF). Passive Optical LAN Using GPON equipment requires that single-mode fibers (SMFs) are used to link the OLT to the ONTs. CAILabs - AROONA-POL - 01/09/2016 3
AROONA-POL Retrofit old infrastructure for POL Adapting backbone MMF and distribution SMFs AROONA-POL allows POL implementation to make use of existing MMF links. It replaces an optical splitter in the distribution frame and avoids complex recabling of inter-building and riser fibers. Benefits of AROONA-POL Compatibility AROONA-POL input is compatible with any LAN MMF (OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4) which can be directly plugged into the OLT. Its SMF outputs are compatible with standard PON splitters and ONTs. AROONA-POL makes the backbone MMF pluggable to the distribution SMFs. Simplicity AROONA-POL eases the deployment of POL: no need to recable the backbone links in SMF. Avoid all risks and disruption due to fiber redeployment. AROONA-POL adapts backbone MMF to distribution SMFs by simply replacing an optical splitter. Cost Control the cost of POL deployment by removing the possibly exorbitant investment of fiber roll-out. AROONA-POL is up to 10 times cheaper than fiber recabling, and eliminates all hidden costs (project management, authorization, down-time, etc.) Up to 10 x cheaper than SMF recabling in complex cases requiring new cable trench 4 CAILabs - AROONA-POL - 01/09/2016
AROONA-POL How does it work? MMF is not directly compatible with single-mode operation If single-mode and multi-mode fibers are connected directly by using standard connectors or by splicing with low control, the unique spatial mode (LP01) from the SMF can couple into several spatial modes of the MMF. This results in: modal dispersion, limiting the reach for a given data rate multi-path interferences, creating power fluctuations (up to 10 db) These phenomena strongly deteriorate the signal. AROONA-POL controls mode coupling between SMF and MMF AROONA-POL simultaneously manages the spatial modes in upstream and downstream operation. Upstream at 1310 nm: AROONA-POL converts the fundamental mode from the distribution SMFs into the LP01 mode of the MMF. Downstream at 1490 nm: AROONA-POL filters the LP01 mode from the MMF and splits the signl into the distribution SMFs. CAILabs - AROONA-POL - 01/09/2016 5
