3 What is ENUM? Problem: How to Address (or Locate) a User in IP Telephony World or PSTN/VoIP Integrated Network? ENUM is a Mechanism to Translate an E.164 Number into A List of URI (Service@host) So that An IP User Can be Accessed by E.164 Number. 17 Some Issues The Web Portal supports IPv4/IPv6. This is good. But the SSL certificate is signed by MKY instead of MOE. ENUM DNS is hosted on an independent server (IPv4 only). It is not recognized by most DNS servers. Trade-off between security and convenience? 17 TAC2000/2000.7

19 AARNet ENUM Trial James Sankar, AARNet AARNet (Australia Academic and Research Network) was fully accredited Tier-2 Registrar since the beginning of the trial in June 2005 AARNet has regularly participated at the AEDG (Australian ENUM Discussion Group) AARNet has an Information Portal and FAQ online since June 2005 AARNet supports a Registration and ENUM Management ( MyENUM ) Portal online since Mid-June 2005 AARNet has registered the domain name as a sign of its ongoing commitment to ENUM for the sector AARNet hosted an ENUM BoF was held during the 20th APAN meeting in Taipei, Taiwan, providing a discussion forum for the Asia-Pacific Region AARNet & Instra wrote the first draft documents for the Authentication & Validation Process (now an official ACMA document) TAC2000/2000.7

21 ERENum.net Other ENUM Efforts NRENum.net is an effort of National Research and Education Networks (NRENs). More information about the service can be found here. Currently over 13 countries participate in NRENum.net. inum inum stands for international Number. It is a new kind of global phone number. inum is making use of the +883 global country code created by the ITU (International Telecommunication Union). Voxbone, with deep expertise in VoIP and telephone numbers, was assigned in 2008 and started the inum Initiative which maintains the SIP and administrative infrastructure to enable this global number range for IP Communications. 21 TAC2000/2000.7

22 e164.org Other ENUM Efforts (cont.) E164.org is a public enum directory of telephone numbers The system works by publishing a DNS zone, 'e164.org', that can be used by various Internet applications. It provides a number of plugins to integrate enum lookups into other applications, as well as a Frequently Asked Questions page ENUM is not restricted to VoIP. You may also download a plug-in for Firefox. 22 TAC2000/2000.7

23 Future Work Make ENUM conveniently available within TANet When I call MOE, I can dial (02) Users need not dial to save money. If you try to call me at (049) p3976, it will automatically translated to sip:solomon@ncnu.edu.tw to save your money. Establish ENUM peering with other NRENs (National Research and Education Networks) It would be a good service to allow professors talk with their PhD advisers and research partners freely. Extend ENUM to other applications I always have difficulty to tell my dad my URL. URL shortener like does not help well. 23 TAC2000/2000.7
