4 Released open source software I have designed and implemented The Sapienza University Networking framework for underwater Simulation Emulation and real-life Testing (SUNSET) which is a new solution to seamlessly simulate, emulate and test in real-life novel communication protocols. It is based on the open source and well known network simulator ns-2 (and its extension ns2-miracle). The SUNSET core software code has been freely released to the community and can be downloaded from the web page of the Underwater Wireless Sensor Group of the SENSES Lab ( where I am a member. Using SUNSET, anyone willing to implement and evaluate its own solution by means of the network simulator ns-2 can use the same code in emulation mode, adopting real hardware for data transmission. The framework code has also been successfully ported on small portable devices (Gumstix, PC104 or other ARM-based systems), allowing to save energy and space when running real-life experiments. Having the entire protocol stack almost independent from the communications devices (some constraints maybe imposed by the specific hardware used for the transmissions in terms of maximal packet size for data or control packets) gives the possibility to implement new protocol solutions in an easy and fast way. Developers and researchers can run tests changing either the selected protocols (MAC, Routing, etc.) or some protocol parameters without any changes in the external devices code and at the same time can change the configuration parameters for the selected communication hardware without any change in the actual protocol stack. Although the proposed framework is general enough to be used for emulation and real-life testing of any kind of networks (radio, optical, underwater, etc.), it has been widely and extensively validated in the underwater environment considering different commercial underwater modems for acoustic transmissions. Moreover, it has been successfully integrated and interfaces with environmental underwater sensors (for temperature and CO2 and methane concentrations) and the navigation system of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). Additional information on SUNSET and on experimental activities to validate such framework, architecture and idea can be found at index.php. Other professional activities - Publicity Chair and Demo Chair at WUWNet 12, the 7th ACM International Conference on Underwater Networks & Systems. - Reviewer for leading international journals (including IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, ACM/Elsevier Wireless Networks, and Elsevier Ad Hoc Networks) and international conferences (including IEEE Infocom, ICC, Globecom, IPDPS, PIMRC, MASS and SECON and ACM MobiHoc). 4
5 Informatic knowledge - Operating system: Mac, Microsoft Windows, Linux. - Programming language: C, C++, Java, Bash, AMPL, Latex, HTML, PHP, Javascript. - Software: Network Simulator ns2 and NsMiracle, Solver Glpk and Cplex, MySQL, PostgressSQL, Apache. - Others: Extended knowledge of different wireless communication standards: (WiFi), (WiMedia), (Bluetooth), (Zig- Bee). Extended knowledge of scheduling, clustering and routing problems and solutions for wireless ad hoc networks. 2 Research Results Research interests and achievements My research interests include the following: Underwater wireless sensor and actor networks. Mobility in wireless sensor networks. Backbone formation in wireless networks. Energy-efficient wireless systems. My research in these fields has ranged from fundamental problem to practical aspects, achieving: 1) one of the first fully implemented protocol stacks for multi-hop communication in underwater sensor networks, 2) a fully implemented protocol stack for mobile (terrestrial) wireless sensor networks, and 3) the implementation of a framework to ease the transition from simulation to emulation to in-water testing of solutions for underwater sensor networks. The latter tool provides a key building block for an underwater testing framework that can be shared by multiple institutions. The work on mobile sensor networks is under testing in a precision agriculture testbed, in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA). The work on underwater sensor networks raised the interest of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI, Woods Hole, MA, U.S.A.) and of the CMRE (NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation, formerly NURC, based in La Spezia, Italy), with which I am currently collaborating on in situ experimentation and testing of my solutions for underwater communications. Collaborating with CMRE and WHOI is providing me with unique opportunities to assess the actual impact of his research given that the high costs of testing at sea forbid many other institutions 5
6 to have testing facilities with the necessary hardware (underwater acoustic communication devices: Modem and Autonomous Underwater Vehicle). The framework has been enriched with several MAC and routing solutions for UWSNs and it has been extended to work with several acoustic modems (WHOI Micro-Modem, Evologics modem and cnode Kongsberg modem), AUV navigation systems (Folaga by Graaltech and MARES by INESC Porto) and ocean monitoring system for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). I have been a coordinator of the CINI (Consorzio Interuniversitario Nazionale per l Informatica) team for the EU-funded project CLAM (Collaborative embedded networks for submarine surveillance). I am currently coordinating the UWSN Group experimental activities of the University of Rome team within the CLAM project. Peer-reviewed publications I am a co-author in the following publications.
