8 7. Hardware Specification CPU Intel IXP420 The Intel IXP420 is a multi-function network processor that integrates the Intel XScale Core (ARM architecture compliant) with the peripheral controllers. IXP420 is running at 266MHz internally. Processor Features: i. Processor Speed 266MHz. ii. GPIO There are 16 GPIO pins supported by IXP420. GPIO pins 0 through 13 can be configured to be general-purpose input or general-purpose output or an interrupt input. iii. UART The UART interfaces are compliant UARTs with the exception of transmit and receive buffers. Transmit and receive buffers are 64 bytes-deep versus the 16bytes required by the UART specification. The interfaces can be configured to support speeds from 1200 baud to 921kbaud. iv. MII Interface Two industry standard media independent interface MII interfaces are integrated into IXP420 with separate media-access controllers and independent network processing engines that is used to configure and control PHY devices that are connected to the MII interface v. USB Interface The integrated USB 1.1 interface is a device-only controller. The interface supports full-speed operation and 16 endpoints and includes an integrated transceiver.there are six isochronous endpoints, one control endpoints, three interrupt endpoints and six bulk endpoints. vi. Expansion Bus 16-bit 66MHz viii. SDRAM Controller The memory controller manages the interface to external SDRAM memory chips. The interface operates at 133MHz / 32-bit, supports eight open pages simultaneously, has two banksto support memory configuration from 8 Mbyte to 256 Mbyte. Flash Interface The kernel code, boot code, system initialization and voice mail are stored in the Intel JS28F256P30 Flash memory. The flash memory size is 32MB. SDRAM Interface 8

9 SI-688 system supports the PC133-compatible SDRAM 16-bit wide device. The banks are accessed 32 bits at a time. The SDRAM structure could be configured as one of the combinations. The SDRAM size is 64MB. DSP LSI DSP LSI403 LP LSI DSP Can support 3 IP users conferencing and 1 FXS channel. (The 3 IP users can initiate the conference call without the FXS user). Supports G.711 and G.729 Codec on any voice channels. One USB ports Support one USB2.0 ports through PCI bus in this system. These USB2.0 ports provide bandwidth of 480 Mbps and are backward compatible with USB V1.1. One USB2.0 port connects outward on the chassis. The other one is for the internal storage device. LAN Port and WAN prot The RTL8201CP is a single chip /single port PHY with an MII (media independent interface) / SNI (serial network interface). It implements all 10/100M ethernet physical layer functions including the physical coding sublayer, physical medium attachment, twisted pair physical medium independent sublayer, with an auto crossover detection 10 base-tx encoder/decore, and twisted pair media access unit.the RTL8201CP supports an external MAC and an external PHY interface. The external MAC interface can be set to PHY mode MII with IXP420. Power Adapter Input voltage range: 100~240 VAC. Input Frequency range: 47~63Hz. Output voltage/current: 12VDC/1.6A Power-on LED/green. Operating condition The system operation is guarantee at the following environment condition: Operation temperature : 0C~ 50C Storage temperature : -40C~ 70C Humidity : 20% ~ 75% 9

10 8. Software Architecture The SI-688 software architecture is show in Figure 5 Figure 5, SI-688 software architecture SI-688 uses Linux 2.6.x as the OS. Because the CPU (IXP42x) has the MMU and we use Linux with MMU. We choose Linux 2.6 (arm-linux) for our OS but not the u-clinux (without MMU). By doing so, the crash of one process will not affect the all other running process (from memory management point of view). This can make the system more robust. In Figure, we can see that we use Linux with MMU. We get the kernel source code from kernel.org and patch them for IXP4xx platform by ourselves.
