It is NEC s platform for mid-to-large enterprises looking to provision IPvoice traffic with limited TDM, or all IP voice traffic, over a corporate LAN or WAN infrastructure. It supports the features and functionality of the proven NEAX 2400 platform. NEAX IPX DM peer-to-peer functionality is based on TCP/IP, a native peer-to-peer communications protocol. The peer-to-peer telephony model uses an end-to-end IP architecture such as an enterprise LAN or WAN that puts minimum telephony functionality in the IP network, except for call transport, and most of the functionality at the IP endpoints (for example, application servers, IP phones, IP softphones). Peer-to-peer switching means the stations participating in a call are connected directly to each other through the IP network. The voice signals travel through the IP network, but don t go through the switch as they do in traditional telephony. The NEAX IPX DM can function in and support a hybrid network with traditional digital/analog switching, IP/TDM switching and peer-to-peer IP switching: A NEAX IPX DM can support 4,000 IP lines per MGC, with a fully expanded system capable of supporting a maximum of 16,000 NEC Dterm IP phones. The system can also support up to 870 NEC Dterm digital or analog phones. IP, digital and analog phones may be mixed and matched depending on the customer requirement. By equipping the system with multiple PIRs, as well as up to four MGCs, customers can expand the capacity of the NEAX IPX DM from a minimum of 384 ports to a maximum of 16,000 ports. 8 January
4 Beyond the capacity of the individual NEAX IPX DM, customers can network up to 126 NEAX 2400 systems across multiple locations using NEC s proprietary FCCS networking protocol, in support of a maximum of 192,000 ports. FCCS is supported via IP networking between NEAX 2400 IPX and NEAX IPX DM systems. The NEAX IPX DM also supports NEC s traditional CCIS protocol for the networking of a mix of up to 16,367 NEAX systems (NEAX 2400, 2000, 1000 and Express). NEC recommends that several network considerations be met before deploying the NEAX IPX DM.The enterprise network should support IP, with the local interface meeting Ethernet standards. The network should be a managed one based on switched, Fast Ethernet technology. Optimal packet delay (latency) should be less than 100 milliseconds and no more than 250 milliseconds (one-way). The optimal jitter rate should be between 10 and 150 milliseconds; a packet loss of 1 percent or less is recommended, with a maximum of 3 percent from end to end. Table 2: NEAX IPX DM System Configurations Supports up to 4,000 IP ports and 3 PIRs PIR Supports 1,280 to 1,536 IP ports Supports up to 290 TDM ports Supports a mixture of TDM and IP ports to the PIR max 4 MGCs with 6 PIRs Supports up to 16,000 IP ports FCCN (Fusion Call Supports up to 192,000 ports Control Network) System Footprint The system s 19-inch rack modules offer a significantly smaller footprint than traditional PBX systems. A NEAX IPX DM PIR measures 17.5 inches H x 19 1/8 inches W x 19 3/8 inches D and can accommodate a maximum of three PIRs and one MGC together. IP-Enabled or IP-Switched NEAX IPX DM A NEAX IPX DM utilizes IP trunks, IP line cards, peer-to-peer Dterm IP phones, peer-to-peer networking (trunking), IP-enabled Dterm phones and IP gateways (if NEC Dterm digital phones are retained). The call connection can utilize a TDM-based switching matrix, or peer-to-peer IP switching, to provision 99 percent of the features and functionality available in the previous generations of NEAX 2400 systems. Existing NEC Dterm Series E phones and Dterm Series i terminals can be upgraded with NEC IP adapter modules. NEC Dterm IP phones are also available. The Dterm IP phones come in eight- and 16-line versions and feature four programmable softkeys, a 24-character by three-line LCD and a built-in 10/100Base-T IP switch with two RJ-45 connectors. IP-enabled Dterm phones and NEAX 32-Port IP station cards support the G.711 (64 Kbps) algorithm for signal conversion and compression/decompression. Optional station card daughter boards add support for the G (5.3 Kbps or 6.3 Kbps) and G.729a (8 Kbps) algorithms. The following is a list of pertinent NEAX IPX DM and associated NEC IP-related products: NEC Dterm IP Adapter (for NEC Dterm Series E and Series i phones) NEC Dterm IP Phones (eight- and 16-button models) 8 January

Centralized backup for the SN1604 can be provided via a Universal Power Supply (UPS), both of which are generally colocated in a power closet with the LAN switch. If the customer is using Cisco power, the NEC terminals can use the Cisco Discovery Protocol for inline powering. System Resiliency NEC Failover Adapters (PSA-R) provide central office (CO) connectivity to an INASET and Dterm IP phone when connection to the PBX is lost due to LAN/WAN failure or loss of power. This feature also allows for a user to select the CO trunk by pushing a button on the adapter. NEAX IPX DM Failover allows Dterm IP users to re-register with different Protocol Handler cards within the PBX, or even another PBX within the FCCS network, if there is a failure in the LAN/WAN. Media Converter/Media Gateways (MC/MG) offer four analog connections and two analog CO trunks for use in remote sites. On loss of WAN connectivity, analog stations on the MC/MG are used to place calls through the CO back to the main site to report trouble. This device is also used for 911 calls during an emergency at the remote site. 8 January
6 Survivable Remote Media Gateway Controller (SR-MGC) will come online when a problem occurs in the WAN. All Dterm IP stations at that remote site will re-register with the SR-MGC and continue to function with all of the same features as they had during normal operations. Media Gateways will provide trunking for those remote stations for outbound dialing. When the WAN is restored, remote stations re-register with the main site and the SR-MGC is returned to a standby mode of operation. Only in the testing phase currently, NEC is expecting to release this product in early IP Networking IP networking, traditionally a NEC strength, is accomplished on the NEAX IPX DM via IP trunk cards for provisioning point-to-point and point-to-multipoint IP networking, or it can be provisioned using peer-topeer networking which enables enterprise customers to utilize their managed LAN or WAN for voice transport: The NEAX IPX DM can support up to 256 Point-Multi-Point IP trunk channels of voice traffic or up to 16,000 peer-to-peer network connections per system to an IP network. NEC offers support for three IP trunk encoding/decoding algorithms: G.711 (64 Kbps voice payload), G (5.3 Kbps or 6.3 Kbps compressed voice payload) and the most common algorithm used for NEAX IP trunks, G.729a (8 Kbps compressed voice payload). Networking Configuration and IP Trunk Configuration options are selected in system software to implement IP networking on the NEAX IPX DM. When deploying multipoint networking (for example, three or more networked NEAX IPX DM s), the voice and signaling packets are sent from the IP trunk card to a router. Depending on the addressing setup for the individual site, the packets are routed to that IP address through a far-end router; the far-end IP trunk receives the packets, interprets the signaling, converts it back to voice and processes the call accordingly. Potential cost savings can be realized from the replacement of traditional, private-line digital trunk connections (for example, T1s) with NEAX IP trunk connections: The signaling between NEAX IPX DM systems, and older NEAX 2400 IMX systems, in a network configuration can be accomplished via NEC s proprietary FCCS protocol. NEC s traditional CCIS protocol enables all NEAX platforms (2400, 2000, 1000, Express) to communicate in a network. Peer-to-peer networking is also available with the NEAX IPX DM. When deploying this type of networking, the CCIS or FCCS signaling between systems uses a PH-C (CCIS) or PH-F (FCCS). The voice connection uses the customer WAN, and the connection is from the originating phone to the terminating phone. The speech path is not switched through the PBX. Each PH card supports 256 trunks. NEAX IPX DM systems also provide a level of support for the international Q.Signaling (QSIG) standard for PBX signaling and control, which enables PBX systems from different vendors to interoperate in a network configuration, although with significantly fewer levels of feature transparency. NEC also supports the networking of NEAX systems over standard ISDN Primary Rate Interface (PRI) connections. NEAX Remote Office Capability The NEAX IPX DM DCS is an option for providing up to 240 distributed IPX ports at a remote office location. The DCS directly connects to a main NEAX IPX DM system via either single-mode or multimode fiber-optic cabling. Several DCS configurations are available ranging from 30 and 120 ports, to a 8 January
7 maximum of 240 ports. The main NEAX IPX DM system requires IPX Series 8500 Generic system software and NEAX configuration software to support the DCS option. Remote site equipment consists of the following: A basic 120-port Distributed Access Rack (19-in) for housing a Remote Optical Multiplexer, two power supply cards (single and redundant) and up to four Distributed Access Packages (DAPs). The Remote Optical Multiplexer can support either single-mode or multimode fiber connectivity to the main NEAX IPX DM system, depending on the distance between the DCS and the IPX DM. Single-mode fiber supports a maximum distance of 9.3 miles; multimode fiber supports a maximum distance of 1.2 miles. Three types of DAPs are available: Analog DAP for 30 analog phones, Digital DAP for 30 Dterm Series E instruments and Digital DAP for 30 Dterm Series III instruments. Any combination of DAP cards is supported in the DCS rack. Adding a second 120-port Distributed Access Rack brings the DCS up to its maximum port configuration of 240. The DCS may be DC- or AC-powered, depending on the configuration required. When configured with AC power, redundant power is not available. PBX Extenders NEC also provides NEAX support for branch-office workers, remote workers and call center agents via its alliance with MCK Communications EXTender products. MCK recently merged with Verso Technologies. An expansion of that alliance produced a packet-based EXTender System for NEAX. EXTender extends the functionality of an enterprise PBX or key system to off-premise locations or employees in home/small offices over connections such as plain old telephone service (POTS), ISDN, leased line, digital subscriber line (DSL) and cable modem. Accessible features include voice mail, direct three- or four-digit dialing, speed dialing, call forwarding, call transferring, call conferencing, tie lines, 800 service and call accounting, among others. NEAX Voice Messaging NEC messaging solutions include NEAXMail AD-40, AD-64 and AD-120 and others such as NEAXMail AD-8, IM-16, Repartee and Reception in its product portfolio. NEC America Inc. and NEC Infrontia Inc jointly own Active Voice LLC: NEAXMail AD-40 an optional voice mail solution for NEAX IPX DM and other NEAX systems is a PBX-integrated, server-based hardware and software solution that uses the IBM OS/2 Warp operating system. AD-40 is available in two PC-platform configurations Level I and Level II, plus an Expansion Chassis that provides seven additional Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) card slots for voice and fax cards for both the Level I and Level II systems. Based on a configuration of 96 IP phones and 96 analog phones, the cost would be $795 per station. GSA Pricing Yes. Competitors Alcatel OmniPCX Enterprise 8 January
12 Avaya MultiVantage Servers Cisco CallManager Nortel Networks Meridian 1 Options 61C, 81C, Succession 1000M Shoreline Enterprise Solution Siemens HiPath 4000, 5000 Strengths The NEAX IPX DM currently scales to support 16,000 IP stations, which enables NEC to provide capacity beyond what many enterprise customers are currently considering for IP telephony implementations. NEC is noted for offering reliable, fully functional systems and products at lower price points than its competitors. With NEC s CCIS and FCCS technology, NEAX systems are known throughout the PBX industry for their strong networking capability. The FCCS architecture supports the utilization of TCP/IP for the system s interprocessor control bus and network node intelligence enhancements, including the capability of all FCCS network nodes to be updated immediately via the FCCS network link for administration purposes. With its Active Voice acquisition, NEC now has full access to the development and direction of pertinent Active Voice LLC messaging platforms, such as AD-8, AD-40, AD-64 and AD-120, among other messaging platforms that Active Voice had previously developed. The exception is Unity, which is now part of Cisco. Limitations The remote survivability option for NEAX IPX DM users currently involves deploying a NEAX 2000 IPS or NEAX IPS DM system in a remote site connected to the WAN and PSTN. A more cost-effective SR- MGC product will not be available until early Failover protection is available via NEC Failover Adapters, which provide CO connectivity to INASET and Dterm IP phones when connection to the PBX is lost due to LAN/WAN failure or loss of power. This feature also allows for a user to select the CO trunk by pushing a button on the adapter. The NEAX IPX DM primarily utilizes proprietary protocols, system signaling and applications except when provisioning IP. NEC FCCS can support a mix of networked NEAX 2400 and IPX DM systems only. A mix of NEAX 2400, 2000, 1000 and Express systems must utilize NEC CCIS for networking. Recommended Gartner Research NEC NEAX 2400 Internet Protocol Exchange, DPRO Key/Hybrid, PBX and IP-PBX Systems: Comparison Columns, DPRO Insight The smaller system footprint of the NEAX IPX DM is advantageous for mid-to-large enterprises with space constraints. And the system can provision up to 75 percent of its system capacity through peer-to-peer ports, which can reduce the amount of TDM support and expense required for things such as trunking. 8 January
13 With its IP-PBX offerings NEAX 2000 IPS, NEAX 2400 IPX and NEAX IPX DM NEC gives enterprise customers a range of line-size flexibility (one to16,000 IP stations). 8 January
