17 PON setbacks for Business FTTx Security issues: customer traffics are mixed together - not acceptable for business users due to data security issues. Limited bandwidth and not future proof: With a maximum trunk bandwidth of 1 Gigabit, each of the 32 subscribers using splitter gets a bandwidth around 20 to 30 Mbps. The limited bandwidth prevents further evolution for new services. Limited distance: PON uses 2 colors nm for downstream, and 1310 for upstream. The use of 1310 nm limits distance. 17

18 PON setbacks for FTTx Investment protection: The fact that PON is very technology specific requiring continuous upgrade in order to satisfy the ever-increasing bandwidth requirement makes it difficult for the service provider to make decent profit due to constant maintenance, services, development etc.. 18

21 E-FTTx advantages over PON High security: user traffics are completely isolated - one of the major differentiations compared with enterprise Ethernet switches. High bandwidth: start with 100M, go to gigabit. Service providers can also use bandwidth limitation feature of MTS series products to start delivering at sub-fast Ethernet, or sub-ge rate, and offer to the customer a gradual increase of bandwidth depending on the acceptable cost. 21
