7 Introduction to the vrealize Automation Management Pack 1 The vrealize Automation Management Pack extends operational management capabilities of the vrealize Operations Manager platform to provide tenant-aware operational visibility of the cloud infrastructure. The vrealize Automation Management Pack enables you as a cloud provider to monitor the health and capacity risk of your cloud infrastructure in the context of the tenant's business groups. You can use the vrealize Automation Management Pack to perform some of the following key tasks: To gain visibility into the performance, health, and capacity risk of the tenant s business groups that the underlying cloud infrastructure supports. To predict capacity shortage on the basis of tenant reservations. To gain visibility as a cloud provider about the capacity risk of business groups now or in the near future. To minimize the time taken to troubleshoot if there is a tenant workload or an underlying infrastructure problem. The vrealize Automation Management Pack provides visibility into the impact to performance, health, and capacity risk of the business groups because of an operational problem in the underlying cloud infrastructure layer. This chapter includes the following topics: Object Types and Relationships, on page 7 Port Information, on page 8 Security Guidelines for the vrealize Automation Management Pack, on page 8 Object Types and Relationships The vrealize Automation Management Pack brings in cloud constructs and their relationships from vrealize Automation into vrealize Operations Manager for operational analysis. You can use the following items in the virtual infrastructure as object types in vrealize Operations Manager when you install the vrealize Automation Management Pack. Tenant Reservation Business Group Deployment (appears only when monitoring vrealize Automation 7.0 and later environments) Blueprint Reservation Policy VMware, Inc. 7

8 vrealize Automation Management Pack 2.0 Guide Storage Reservation Policy Network Profile Fabric Group Objects types in an enterprise environment are related to other objects types in that environment. Object types are either part of a larger object type, or they contain smaller component objects, or both. When you select a parent object type, vrealize Operations Manager shows any related child objects types. The fabric group object types interact with VMware vcenter adapter object types such as hosts and clusters. The tenant object type has a parent-child relationship with business group, reservation, and blueprint object types. The business group, blueprint and reservation object types interact with each other. The tenant, blueprint, reservation, and business group object types have a parent-child relationship with the virtual machines and VMware vcenter adapter objects such as datastore, host, and cluster. The network profile object type has a parent-child relationship with the business group, reservation, reservation policy, and blueprint object types. Reservation policy, business group, blueprint, and reservation object types interact with each other. The tenant, blueprint, reservation, reservation policy, and business group object types have a parentchild relationship with the virtual machines and VMware vcenter adapter objects such as hosts and cluster. Port Information Communication between the vrealize Automation Management Pack and vrealize Operations Manager In environments where strict firewalls are in place, specific ports must be open for the vrealize Automation Management Pack to retrieve data from vrealize Automation. vrealize Automation URL on port 443 vrealize Automation IAAS URL on port 443 vrealize Automation SSO URL on port 7444 NOTE This version of the vrealize Automation Management Pack supports only vcenter objects used and managed by vrealize Automation. No other object kinds such as AWS or Openstack resources are supported at this time. Security Guidelines for the vrealize Automation Management Pack The vrealize Operations management packs include adapters built by VMware as well as adapters written by third parties. Although adapters execute independently, they execute within a common runtime environment within the vrealize Operations Manager collector host. Java language security protects the adapters from interference with other adapters. All adapters execute within the common JRE process trust zone. You must only load and use adapters that you obtain from a publisher you trust and only after you verify the adapter's code integrity before loading into vrealize Operations Manager. Even though adapters execute independently, they can make configuration changes to the collector host or Java runtime environment that may affect the security of other adapters. For example, at installation time an adapter can modify the list of trusted certificates. During execution an adapter can change the TLS/SSL certificate validation scheme and thereby change how other adapters validate certificates. The vrealize Operations Manager system and collector hosts do not isolate adapters beyond the natural isolation provided by Java execution. The system trusts all adapters equally. 8 VMware, Inc.

9 Chapter 1 Introduction to the vrealize Automation Management Pack Adapters are responsible for their own data security. When they collect data or make configuration changes to data sources, each adapter provides its own mechanisms and guarantees with regard to the confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity of the collected data. vrealize Automation v2.0 of the adapter enforces certificate checks when communicating to the vrealize Automation servers. These certificates are presented when the user clicks the Test button on the Adapter Instance setup page. Once these certificates are accepted by the user, they will be associated with that adapter instance. Any communication to the vrealize Automation servers will ensure that the certificates presented by the servers match the ones accepted by the user. VMware, Inc. 9

14 vrealize Automation Management Pack 2.0 Guide Configuration Properties In large scale environments, multiple simultaneous API calls might cause performance problems in vrealize Automation. When an adapter sends multiple parallel requests to WAPI in particular, it severely impacts the database. Configuration properties are used to configure the settings with appropriate values. Table 2 1. Configuration Properties Property Name Description Default Value vcenterresourcediscoveryfre quency The frequency of vcenter resource discovery in hours. The default value of 0 corresponds to every collection cycle. 0 querypagesize The number of items to fetch in a single API call. 100 wapicollectionmaxseconds wapithreadcount usewapifor70businessgroup s usewapifor70reservations The upper limit for the amount of time that the adapter needs to try and retrieve the data from API calls. This property must be increased in large-scale environments, in addition to increasing the adapter's collection time interval. The number of threads that are querying WAPI at a time. This property may be increased or decreased based on speed or performance requirements. This flag enables or disables usage of WAPI API to collect Businessgroup from vrealize Automation 7.0. By default, a vrealize Automation Management Pack 2.0 instance collects Businessgroup from CAFE API. NOTE WAPI is slow and inefficient and can degrade the vrealize Automation appliance's performance. However, it provides more metrics for allocation and quota. CAFE is more efficient but lacks those metrics. This flag enables or disables usage of WAPI API to collect Reservations from vrealize Automation 7.0. By default, vrealize Automation Management Pack 2.0 instance collects Reservations from CAFE API. NOTE WAPI is slow and inefficient and can degrade the vrealize Automation appliance's performance. However, it provides more metrics for allocation and quota. CAFE is more efficient but lacks those metrics. 3600s (1 hour) 1 False False Upgrade the vrealize Automation Management Pack When upgrading the vrealize Automation Management Pack from version 1.0 to 2.0, the state of the existing vrealize Automation Management Pack adapter instance and the monitoring resources changes to Failed. This happens because the adapter instance requires certificates to communicate with the vrealize Automation setup in the later version of the Management Pack. Procedure 1 In the left pane of vrealize Operations Manager, click the Administration icon and click Solutions. 2 From the Solutions page, select the vrealize Automation Management Pack and click Configure. 3 From the Manage Solution page, select the instance, perform test connection, and accept the certificates when prompted. 14 VMware, Inc.

21 Alert Definitions 4 Health Alert definitions are combinations of symptoms and recommendations that identify problem areas in your environment and generate alerts on which you can act. Symptom and alert definitions are defined for vrealize Automation objects. The alerts are population-based alerts based on the risk or health of a certain percentage of child objects. There are no alerts generated for network profiles. The health and risk thresholds are as follows: When 25%-50% of the child objects have health issues, the parent object will trigger an alert with a Warning health level. When 50%-75% of the child objects have health issues, the parent object will trigger an alert with an Immediate health level. When 75%-100% of the child objects have health issues, the parent object will trigger an alert with a Critical health level. Risk When 25%-50% of the child objects have risk issues, the parent object will trigger an alert with a Warning risk level. 29 Chapter 6 Objects and Metrics Table 6 4. Blueprint Metrics (Continued) Metric Key Metric Name Description AverageDeploymentTime Deployment Time The average time required to deploy the virtual machines (appears only when monitoring vrealize Automation 7.0 and later environments). AverageApprovalTime Approval Time The average time required to approve the deployment (appears only when monitoring vrealize Automation 7.0 and later environments). Deployment Metrics For the deployment object type, the vrealize Automation Management Pack collects metrics about deployment time and approval time. Table 6 5. Deployment Metrics Metric Key Name Description Deployment Time Deployment Time The total time required for deployment. Approval Time Approval Time The total time required for approving the deployment. NOTE The deployment metrics appear only when monitoring vrealize Automation 7.0 and later environments. Managed Resources Object as a Filter in vrealize Automation The vrealize Automation Management Pack uses filters to display the VMware vcenter adapter objects that are managed by or have some association with vrealize Automation. Some of the dashboards have widgets that are configured to display only VMware vcenter adapter objects that vrealize Automation manages or is associated with. vrealize Automation uses an object called Managed Resources as a filter to display only those objects. All of these resources are placed under the Managed Resources object of type vrealize Automation Entity Status. The absence of this filter causes all VMware vcenter adapter objects to be displayed in the widgets. If you delete the Managed Resources object, the adapter re-creates the object, but the dashboards display incorrect information in the widgets that use this filter. If you delete the Managed Resources object, you must manually configure the widgets in the dashboard and select the Managed Resources object as a filter in each section that displays the VMware vcenter adapter objects. 31 Capacity Models 7 An object's capacity model, combined with policy settings, is used to determine the value of all badges and sub-badges aside from Health. 33 Troubleshooting the vrealize Automation Management Pack 8 Known troubleshooting information can help you to diagnose and correct problems with the vrealize Automation Management Pack. This chapter includes the following topics: Test Connection Fails and Results in a Time Synchronization Exception, on page 33 Virtual Machines Fail to Appear in Dashboards, on page 33 Determining classes to be enabled for debug logging while troubleshooting adapter collection issues, on page 34 Test Connection Fails and Results in a Time Synchronization Exception Problem When you configure the vrealize Automation Management Pack, test connection fails with a time synchronization error. Cause The time on the vrealize Operations Manager system is set to the wrong real time. Solution Verify that the time in the vrealize Operations Manager is synchronized to a valid Network Time Protocol (NTP) server and the time on the appliance is set to the correct real time. If vrealize Operations Manager is not configured to use an NTP server, then vrealize Operations Manager is synchronized with the host. In such a case, configure the host system to use an NTP server to get the correct time. Virtual Machines Fail to Appear in Dashboards Problem When you configure the vrealize Automation Management Pack, the dashboards do not display the virtual machines in the relationship tree. Cause If you delete the Managed Resources object, the vrealize Automation Management Pack re-creates the object. However the object is no longer used in the widgets. You must manually re-apply the filter in those widgets. VMware, Inc. 33

34 vrealize Automation Management Pack 2.0 Guide If you do not configure VMware vcenter adapters with the same endpoints that vrealize Automation uses, vrealize Operations Manager does not collect data for those hosts, clusters, datastores, and virtual machines. The hosts, clusters, datastores, and virtual machines are not displayed in the Managed Resources object. The VMware vcenter adapter brings in the objects and metric data from the VMware vcenter endpoint. The super user account that you require for the vrealize Automation Management Pack instance configuration, must have fabric group administrator rights for all fabric groups and tenants. If the super user account does not have these rights, information about virtual machines and reservation objects from vrealize Automation is not collected by the VMware vcenter adapter. Solution Verify the Environment Overview widget in the vrealize Automation Tenant Overview dashboard and the Cloud Infrastructure Health and Capacity Overview widget in the vrealize Automation Cloud Infrastructure Monitoring dashboard and ensure that the Managed Resources object is selected as a filter for all virtual machines, datastores, clusters, and hosts. Ensure that you configure a VMware vcenter adapter instance for each VMware vcenter endpoint that vrealize Automation also uses. Ensure that the super user account has the following rights: tenant administrator rights for all tenants, infrastructure administrator rights for all tenants, and fabric administrator rights for all fabric groups under all tenants. Determining classes to be enabled for debug logging while troubleshooting adapter collection issues Problem When you configure the vrealize Automation Management Pack, classes are not enabled for debug logging while troubleshooting adapter collection issues. Solution You can determine the classes that must be enabled for debug logging while troubleshooting adapter collection issues. These settings can be updated in the $ALIVE_BASE/user/conf/collector/log4j.properties file. To enable debugging for the vrealize Automation adapter, configure the log4j properties for the following classes of the collector: log4j.logger.com.vmware.adapter3.vcac.vcacadapter=debug log4j.logger.com.vmware.adapter3.vcac.impl.systeminfrastructureservice=debug log4j.logger.com.vmware.adapter3.vcac.impl.systemcafeservice=debug log4j.logger.com.vmware.adapter3.vcac.util.wapiworkitem=debug log4j.logger.com.vmware.adapter3.vcac.util.wapiresourcecollection=debug log4j.logger.com.vmware.adapter3.vcac.util.vcenterresolver=debug 34 VMware, Inc.
