5 SIP Calling Capabilities SIP Endpoints can communicate using a SIP Proxy/Registrar (IP PBX) Much like a computer using DNS, the SIP Registrar brokers the call handling functions and allows you to numeric dial. Once the call is established, RTP information (voice/video) is exchanged directly between devices. Transfers and tear-down of the call are handled by the SIP Proxy. 6 SIP Calling Capabilities There s more! SIP also allows for communicating directly between endpoints using Peer-to-peer mode (aka Point to Point) Using P2P, the call setup request is directed to an IP address instead of using an extension number. Assuming a SIP conformant device at the far end, both devices (SIP endpoints) will negotiate the call setup, exchange of audio/video, and call teardown. You can still present the call to multiple SIP endpoints simultaneously in this fashion. Dial string appears like this: sip: (for example)

(behind the scenes Session Description Protocol (SDP)) Packetized information inside the Invite or OK method which conveys information to enable participation in a multimedia session SDP includes description of: Media to use (codec, sampling rate) Media destination (IP address and port number) Session name and purpose Times the session is active Contact information Note: despite its name, SDP is not a protocol but rather a means of formatting data to provide the above information used in negotiating capabilities and sharing information between UA, Proxy, and other devices involved in the session.
