Outline Background Challenges Why Standards? What Standards are Needed? IRIG 106 Chapter 10 GigE Vision Applying Standards Benefits of Standardization Palletized Instrumentation JRIP Pod Airborne Video Systems SKYNET Pod Instrumentation Control Panel Pre/Post Mission Support The Path Forward Conclusion 2
Background Why is instrumentation important? The primary goal of T&E is DECISION QUALITY DATA Effectiveness/performance of System Under Test (SUT) can only be determined from relevant data Good instrumentation design and application can provide useful data for decision makers Often overlooked in context to test methodology How data is collected is as important as the external environment/methodology used to generate it 3
Challenges Instrumentation systems are facing constraints on multiple fronts Increasing Complexity of SUTs Data rates increasing dramatically Types of data becoming more varied SUTs becoming multi-layered with multiple participants Decreasing Budgets Instrumentation often the last consideration for Acquisition Program budgets Test-coded aircraft are in shorter supply 4
Why Standards? Why is providing effective data instrumentation across the DoD Enterprise a challenge? Often there can be multiple solutions to a single requirement These solutions are often incompatible 5
What Standards are Needed? Command & Control Data Transport Imagery (Video/Image/Stream) Media/File Structure External Time Synchronization Data Merge Time Correlation Defined Interfaces to Ground Support Infrastructure 6
IRIG 106 Range Commander s Council (RCC) Collaboration of Test, Space & Training Ranges Establish common solutions/standards Promote interoperability for T&E Telemetry Group (TG) Primary driver for Instrumentation Standards» Optical Systems Group (OSG) and Telecommunication and Timing Group (TTG) also provide requirements Inter-Range Instrumentation Group (IRIG) 106» Comprehensive Standard for Telemetry Covers TM Formats and Transmission Parameters, Digital Recording Specifications and Formats, etc. 7
