1 I OVERVIEW (Giga Ethernet Passive Optical Network) PIZZA BOX is a telecom class product, fully complying with the IEEE802.3ah standard, wi th a clear and simple two layer network structure. It is able to provide your clients wi th multiple service such as high speed da ta and IP transmission wi th excellent cost performance. It is a viable and manageable FTTH product and easy to maintain. 1U standard subrack is adopted, which provides two 10/100/1000BASE-Tx interfaces, and on which two more 1000 BASE-LX optical interfaces can be extended. Moreover, four PON plugin cards can be equipped flexibly, so as to provide clients with more choices and utility. 2 III EPON TECHNOLOGY The concept of Passive Optical Network (PON) has come into being for a long time. Since it saves optical fiber resources and is transparent to network protocol, it has become increasingly important for the Optical Access Network (OAN). Meanwhile, because of the convenience, availability and low price, Ethernet technology has become dominant in the LAN market and been practically proved to be the best carrier for IP data package after its 20 year development. As IP service takes up an increasing proportion in the metropolitan area and trunk transmission, the Ethernet has gradually penetrated into Access Network (AN),metropolitan area network and even backbone network. EPON, derived from the combination of Ethernet and PON technology, takes the advantages of both of them and is becoming the prevailing technology in the field of OAN. EPON combines with several best technologies and network structures and offers a variety of Ethernet services by adopting onepoint to multipoint. III.1 FEATURES OF EPON TECHNOLOGY The signal transmission between OLT and ONU is based on IEEE Ethernet frame. 8B/10B line code, 1Gbps data rate and 1.25Gbps line bit rate for up and downlink symmetric transmission. Based upon MPCP (Multi Point Control Protocol) mechanism of MAC substrate. MPCP uses messages, state machines, and timers to control the topology of a P2MP access. P2P emulation substrate is the key component of EPON/MPCP. Splitting ratio 1:32 Supporting A class and B class type ODN Typical EPON network structure A typical EPON system is composed of optical line terminal (OLT), optical network unit/terminal (ONU)/ONT and passive optical splitter (POS). OLT is located in the root node, connecting with each ONU through ODN. It offers uplink PON oriented optical fiber interfaces and downlink GE interfaces. As to the unified network management of EPON, OLT is the main control center, performing the main functions of network management. POS is a passive device the connects the OLT and ONUs. ONU is near the user end, connecting with user terminal. Between OLT and ONUs, there are tree structure, bus structure and hybrid structure may be flexibly chosen

3 III.2 Principle of uplink and downlink data transmission In the EPON, physical link is one point to multipoint; as to the logic link, OLT allocates a virtual link for each ONU with the P2P emulation technology, and each link is identified with a LLID. After the ONU registration, OLT will dynamically allocate a LLID for it. Time division multiplexing (TDM) technology is adopted by EPON for uplink data channel. With the control of OLT, ONU sends uplink data during different time slot and several Ethernet data frames may be included in one time slot. UPLINK transmiision Broadcasting mode is introduced by EPON for downlink transmission. Data is identified and exported with LLID in the preamble code of IEEE frame. ONU only allows the data frame with the same LLID of its own to pass through. DOWNLINK transmiision III.3 Safety of downlink transmissions Due to the multipoint broadcasting mode of PON, downlink data will be broadcasted to all the ONUs in a system. If an anonymous user removes the receive confinement function of the ONU, he/she will be able to monitor the all the users downlink data, so called as monitoring threat in the PON system. Another feature of PON is that it is impossible for an ONU to monitor the uplink data of other ONUs in the network. OLT encrypts downlink data (all data frame and OAM frame) so to keep the information security. The system churns for each LLID and each LLID has independent cryptographic key. III.4 ENCRIPTION AES128; high security A ONU transmits its cryptographic key to OLT by OAM massage, and then OLT encrypts downlink data according to specific encryption algorithm with this cryptographic key. A cryptographic key is the generated from Exclusive OR (XOR) and then summation of 3byte data drawn from uplink user data by ONU and 3byte random numbers. Key synchronization: Since the key should be updated regularly, it is necessary to have a synchronization mechanism, which makes ONU know which key is used at present
