Introduction This documentation describes how to use the hardware of CLIPSTER, the real-time conforming and finishing system by DVS. CLIPSTER is a powerful high-resolution video workstation with enormous flexibility, especially designed to meet the demands of modern postproduction houses. Based on DVS' quality hardware, CLIPSTER works with uncompressed material in any resolution up to 2K in RGB 0 bit. The video workstation stores the material in its native resolution and mode in a selectable file format directly on the connected storage, making pre-conversion or compression unnecessary. Clips of any resolution, color space or bit depth can be mixed on the timeline at will. The output resolution can be chosen freely as well and throughout the entire workflow the quality of the high-resolution footage is maintained. Furthermore, up to 6 different channels of audio can be in- or output by CLIPSTER and all audio data can be accessed and processed with the software as easily as the video material in up to 99 audio tracks. CLIPSTER provides enough intrinsic power to accept material from cameras, telecines or VTRs. Uncompressed HD and 2K data can be input either via the standard dual-link HD-SDI interface or a DVI connector. In a studio environment, CLIPSTER connects to high-resolution cameras, enabling the capturing of footage together with an immediate viewing and editing afterwards. When integrated into a high-end post workflow, CLIPSTER handles real-time telecine transfers and all subsequent editing of the transferred material. The CLIPSTER hardware can be delivered with various storage capacities and an upgrade of a CLIPSTER from a smaller storage capacity to a higher one is available as an optional feature. Furthermore, CLIPSTER can also be connected to a DVS-SN that provides several terabytes of data storage. It can be used in any environment where large amounts of data must be accessed in real time by multiple clients. Then the attached workstations can use the DVS-SN for all their storage requirements and a local storage may be unnecessary I -

Introduction General Notes CLIPSTER is delivered to you fully preconfigured and optimized for a real-time in- and output of uncompressed video streams. Changing any of the settings (for example, the hardware, software and/or BIOS settings) may lead to a loss of performance or may even render the system unusable. Reconfiguring the video system anew is in most cases a lengthy procedure. Do not change any of the settings unless you are absolutely sure of what you are doing and what the results would be. The video hard disks of CLIPSTER are arranged as a stripe set. If one hard disk fails, your data will be unrecoverable. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to perform backups of your video data at regular intervals. Only use the designated video drive (disk stripe set) to store video and audio data. Other storage locations will be too slow for real-time operations. Leave about 5% of the overall video hard disk capacity for real-time performance reasons empty of data I -9

Overview 2 This chapter provides a detailed overview of the CLIPSTER hardware. The video workstation will be shown in a front and a rear view and all its parts and connectors will be listed. Because CLIPSTER can be delivered in two hardware variants, i.e. one providing a single chassis and another comprising two chassis, these will be explained first. fter this the front of the CLIPSTER video system will be described, followed by an overview of the rear of the video system. For explanatory reasons the section about the rear of CLIPSTER also contains some information about the digital video in- and outputs, for example, the DVS naming conventions and the signal distribution over the SDI connectors. The chapter will be concluded with further details and descriptions about the connectors provided by the CLIPSTER hardware I 2-

CLIPSTER Hardware Guide 2. Hardware Variants of CLIPSTER The CLIPSTER video system can be delivered in two different hardware variants depending on the amount of the internal storage or the maximum possible real-time capability of the system. Usually it consists of a single chassis only. However, when larger amounts of storage or an enhanced performance are needed, the system may comprise two chassis. Main System Chassis (One- and Two-chassis Setups) In every delivery and setup you will have a main system chassis. This holds the computer system and the hardware equipment of CLIPSTER as well as all hard disks (in case of a two-chassis setup just the first half of the video hard disks). In this chassis the DVS PCI video board the most important part of the video system providing all video and audio in- or output functions will be installed as well. Disk rray Chassis (Two-chassis Setup) In case you have ordered a larger amount of storage or an enhanced real-time capability for your CLIPSTER video system, it will require two chassis, the main system as described above and a disk array. In a two-chassis setup the second casing (called disk array ) contains the other half of the video hard disks as well as additional controllers. It can be distinguished from the main system easily because it will not provide a DVD drive or USB connectors integrated at the front. The two devices have to be interconnected as described in section Two-Chassis Setup on page 3-3 to provide the overall amount of storage or processing speed. 2-2

Overview 2.2 Overview of the Front This section gives an overview of the front of CLIPSTER. First the operable front panel at the top of the video system will be described which provides all operational items as well as the LEDs of the video system. This will be followed by a description of the faceplate that covers the hard disks of the system s disk array. The faceplate can be lifted in case you need access to one of the hard disks, for example, for replacement. The section will be concluded with some explanations about the DVD drive The Front of the Video System This section provides an overview of the front of the video system: operation items Because the front of the main system is almost identical to the one of the disk array (see section Hardware Variants of CLIP- STER on page 2-2) this section is valid for both chassis, i.e. the disk array s front as well as the front of the main system. The disk array of a two-chassis setup can be distinguished from the main system easily: It does not provide any USB connectors nor the DVD drive. LEDs faceplate DVD drive I Figure 2-: Overview of the front 2-3

CLIPSTER Hardware Guide operation items LEDs faceplate DVD drive With the operation items located at the upper lefthand side of the front, the video system can be controlled (e.g. turned on or off). dditionally, they provide two USB connectors for an easy connectivity to devices such as memory sticks. Further information about the operation items can be found in section Operation Items on page 2-4. The upper part of the front is equipped with LEDs that indicate the system status and the status of the internal video hard disks. Further information about the LEDs and their meaning can be found in section LEDs on page 2-5. The faceplate covers the video hard disk array. If you need access to one of the hard disks, for example, to replace it, it can be lifted. The faceplate will be described in more detail in section Faceplate on page 2-7. The DVD drive can be used, for example, for software installations. Further information about the DVD drive can be found in section DVD Drive on page Operation Items With the operation items located at the upper left-hand side of the video system s front, the hardware of CLIPSTER can be controlled (e.g. turned on or off). power reset mute USB connectors Figure 2-2: Operation items overview 2-4

Overview power reset The power switch turns the system on or off. The respective state of the system will be indicated by the DVS logo in the middle of the faceplate (see section Faceplate on page 2-7): If it is illuminated, the power is turned on; if not, the power is turned off. The reset button to the right of the power switch resets your video system and initiates a warm reboot. mute USB connectors If possible, save your data before resetting the system. Otherwise data may be lost. Because the disk array of a two-chassis setup does not contain any computer components, the reset button provides no function here. In case of a system malfunction, e.g. a fan failure, power supply failure or overheating, the system alarm turns on. By pressing this button the alarm buzzer can be switched mute. The two integrated USB connectors (universal serial bus) offer you the possibility to connect other devices such as memory sticks easily and quickly LEDs The front of the video system is equipped with a total of 20 LEDs which indicate on the one hand the system status (four LEDs) and on the other the status of the hard disks of the disk array (6 LEDs). 5 I system LEDs HDD LEDs Figure 2-3: LEDs of the video system The LEDs can be seen only when they are flashing because they are located behind the white front strip and thus not visible when off. 2-5

Furthermore, if you need access to one of the hard disks, for example, to replace it, the faceplate can be lifted in its hinges without any difficulty. It is fastened to the chassis with magnets only, and you just have to pull the lower part of the faceplate away and upwards to loosen the faceplate. Figure 2-7: Lifting of faceplate Then you can access the hard disks of the video hard disk array: lifted faceplate hard disk array Figure 2-8: Uncovered video hard disk array Each hard disk of the array is connected to the system with the help of a disk carrier which makes the removal of a hard disk from the system easy, for example, in the event of a failure. For further information about this as well as an overview of a disk carrier see section Replacing a Hard Disk on page

Overview DVD Drive The video system is equipped with a DVD drive which can be used for service purposes or to install additional software. 33 Overview 2.4 Connectors in Detail For explanatory reasons this section starts with some information about the digital video in- and outputs detailing, for example, the DVS naming conventions and the signal distribution over the SDI connectors. fter that follows a description of the individual panels and connections at the rear of the video system in detail as they are shown in section Overview of the Rear on page Digital Video I/Os This section contains some further information about the digital video in- and outputs of CLIPSTER. Because CLIPSTER provides sometimes different functions on the connectors of the video system, the labeling has been simplified. DVS named the input/output channels (connectors) of the digital video signals alphabetically. For YUV you will usually use one channel (connectors labeled, single link). For YUV you will need two channels ( for YUV and B for the key signal). With RGB you will always need two channels ( and B, dual link). The third in- and output channel ( C ) is used to provide more flexibility for digital video. When choosing a single-link video mode during input you can select between port and port C, while during an output channel C currently mirrors the output of channel. dditionally, this signal output can be provided with customizable information superimposed on the image (e.g. timecode, keycode, comments, etc.). The table below shows how the signals are distributed over the SDI (serial digital interface) in- and output ports for the different color modes: Video Mode Input Output Port Port B Port C Port Port B Port C I YC b C r 4:2:2 Y, C b, C r 2 Y, C b,c r 2 Y, C b, C r Y, C b, C r YC b C r 4:2:2:4 Y, C b, C r Y, C b, C r Y, C b, C r YC b C r 4:4:4 Y, ½ C b, ½C r YC b C r 4:4:4:4 Y, ½ C b, ½C r RGB 4:4:4 G, ½ R, ½B RGB 4:4:4:4 G, ½ R, ½B ½C b, ½ C r Y, ½ C b, ½C r ½C b, ½ C r, Y, ½ C b, ½C r ½R, ½B G, ½R, ½B ½R, ½B, G, ½R, ½B ) Mirror of port with additional customizable information (if enabled). 2) Software switchable between port and port C. ½C b, ½ C r Y, ½ C b, ½C r ½C b, ½ C r, ½R, ½B Y, ½ C b, ½C r G, ½R, ½B ½ R, ½ B, G, ½ R, ½B 2-3
