1 AXS-100 Slave Controller For AXS-100 and AXS100XT Access Control Systems Installation Guide Introduction The AXS-100 Slave Controller is a cost effective solution that extends AXS-100 or AXS100XT access control system functionality up to 16 doors on a single RS-485 data loop using any combination of up to *8 Master or Slave controllers. Each AXS-100 slave controller operates in real-time with distributed intelligence and a full mirror database for offline conditions. Should a communication failure occur between any of the slaves and the master controller or between the master controller and the host computer, each AXS-100 slave controller will continue to function normally with no degradation in performance and response times of card reading, alarm activation or activation of logic events. Each AXS-100 slave can also monitor the status of the protected doors (open or closed) and the status of the door locks (locked or unlocked). Initial system configuration is programmed via the master controller s keypad. Functionality such as event log access, card holder programming and/or mode updates are handled via EIRIS V4.6 (or higher) or AXSalert enterprise software. *One Master controller is required for each RS-485 data loop. CAUTION: It is important that you read, understand, and follow the instructions in this document. If you have questions, call your local VT support representative. 1. Mounting and Initial Assembly A. Metal Box Mounting The AXS-100 Slave Controller must be installed indoors, within the protected premise, in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NFPA70) and the local authorities having jurisdiction. Fig. 2 - Backup Battery Note: Do not connect (the transformer) to a power receptacle that is controlled by a switch. B. Backup Battery Installation (Optional) Locate the optional backup battery (12V, 7.0Ah, Lead-acid battery) in the lower left side of the system enclosure (see fig. 2). 2 C. Metal Box Door Lock Assembly The door lock assembly of the system metal box is presented in figure 3 (the lock and the brass nut are supplied in the system accessories box). D. Tamper Switch Installation & Wiring It is necessary to protect the controller against tampering. A UL Listed Tamper switch must be installed (see fig. 4) and wired to AUXIN1 and of lock #3 of each controller. 1 Align lock with the prepunched hole and insert it into the hole. 2 Place the brass nut on the lock, tighten by hand and f i nall y t ighten wi th spanner (7/8 ). 3 2. Panel Wiring A. Proximity Readers Each Slave Controller can be connected to two proximity readers: Each reader is connected to the controller via a 4-wire cable. The standard cable is color coded as follows: RED Power + BLACK Power GREENTX WHITE RX Use extension cables with the same colors to avoid connection errors. Note 1: Installing a RDR-4 on a metal surface or a metal door frame significantly decreases read range. If the reader must be installed on a metal surface, use the RDR-BACK so that the reader will be at least 1 cm (3/8 in.) away from the metal material Note 2: When installing more than one RDR-4, the distance between them should be at least 60 cm (2 ft.), to ensure proper operation. B. Inputs Each AXS-100 Slave Controller can be connected to two inputs per door as described below: Request-to-Exit (RTE) button or PIR: Installed near the door in the secure area will allow a person to open the door from within for leaving. Door Position micro switch: Installed between the door and door frame will provide the controller with door status indications. Both the RTE and the Door Position inputs can be connected to either normally open or normally closed switches. The default is a normally open RTE and normally closed Door Position (when the door is shut). Page 3 of 6

Each connector block has a MON as well as N.O. and N.C. connectors. If the slave controller is configured for one door, connect it to the EMS/EML, which is located on the left side of the controller. All types of connections are detailed in the next drawing. 12VDC Normally Open Power+ Jumper Power 12VDC Normally Closed Power+ Jumper Power Non-12VDC or high current devices - Dry contact N.O. - - Non-12VDC or high current devices - Dry contact N.C. The lock sections include also 12V power connectors. These connectors provide power to the lock with a current limit of 400mA for each lock. The slave controller supplies power from a backup battery if available when the AC power is down. Electromagnetic locks which constantly draw large currents should use the dry contact ONLY without connecting the internal power supply. The same holds true for any other device, which does T operate at 12VDC. If you notice problems with a slave controller operating an EMS that uses an internal power supply, connect the diode supplied between + and of the EMS output (see Panel Wiring Diagram). D. Controller Configuration Up to seven AXS-100 slave controllers can be connected to a Master AXS-100/AXS-100 XT controller using a single twisted pair cable. Each controller (irregardless of type) provides a 3-connector block for daisy chaining the devices in a bus type configuration. Connect terminal B to B and D to D, to, this way up to seven slave controllers. Each AXS-100 Slave Controller has to be assigned a unique ID address before the device can be fully functional. Since each RS-485 data loop MUST contain a Master Controller whose ID address is always set to 1, the ID addresses of the slave(s) units are range from 2.8. Addresses The ID address of the slave controller is configured using the DIP switches located on the controllers circuit board as shown below: - - TE: A controller s ID address MUST be set before applying power to the unit. Also never change the DIP switch settings while the slave is powered up. TE: The ID addresses of the slave controllers need not be in the physical order of connection. 3. Maintenance A. Periodic Check Once a month, the AXS-100 Slave Controller must be checked by presenting a tag/card to the reader and verifying that the proper door is opened B. Lithium Battery Handling/Disposal Replace battery with PANASONIC Coin battery type CR2032, 3V only. Use of another battery may present a risk of fire or explosion. Caution: Battery may explode if mistreated, do not recharge, disassemble or dispose in fire. Dispose any used Lithium battery only in an approved disposal container. 4. TE: One master controller is required for each RS-485 data loop. Connections between the controllers must be implemented with CAT-5 twisted pair cable. The maximum distance between controller #1 (Master) and the furthest one (controller #8) is no longer than 1,200 meters. The circuit board of the AXS-100 controller (irregardless of type) contain 3-connector blocks for daisy chaining up to 7 (seven) slave controllers to one Master AXS-100/AXS-100 XT controller in a bus configuration. This device has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in residential installations. This equipment generates; uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio and television reception. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. (VT or the Company), and its affiliates, warrants its products (hereinafter referred to as "the Product ) to be free of defects in materials and workmanship under normal operating conditions and use for a period of one year from the date of shipment by VT. The Company s obligations shall be limited within the warranty period, at its option, to repair or to replace the defective Product or any defective component or part thereof. VT shall not be responsible for any dismantling, installation, reinstallation, purchasing, shipping, insurance, or any similar charges. VT shall have no liability for any damages, including without limitation, any direct, indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, expenses, costs, profits, lost savings or earnings, or other damages arising out of the use of the Product or the removal, installation, reinstallation, repair or replacement of the Product or any related events. In the event that there is any liability against VT, such liability shall be limited to the purchase price of the Product which amount shall be fixed as liquidated damages. The purchaser and user understand that this Product may be compromised or circumvented by intentional acts; that the Product will not in all cases prevent death, personal injury, property damage, or other loss resulting from burglary, robbery, fire or other causes; and that the Product will not in all cases provide adequate warning or protection. The purchaser and user also understand that a properly installed and maintained alarm may reduce the risk of events such as burglary, robbery, and fire without warning, but it is not insurance or a guarantee that such events will not occur or that there will be no death, personal injury, property damage, or other loss as a result of such events.
