2 OPERATION Our Telephone Line Monitor (TLM) device is designed to activate whenever the Telephone Line that it is connected to has been lost, disconnected or cut. In the event that this happens, 10 seconds later TLM will automatically CLOSE the contacts of an Internal Relay, which in turn can be used to trigger other external equipment to advise of the loss of Telephone Line. The contacts of the Internal Relay will remain closed until the telephone line service has been restored. TLM waits 10 seconds before activating the internal relay to overcome false alarms should a very brief interruption to the telephone line service occur. TLM is totally Transparent in operation and will not affect the use of the Telephone Line in any way. Two Optional low cost Accessories are available from Natcomm for use with TLM, to alert the user that the Telephone Line has been lost. These Accessory Devices are all designed for Easy User Installation. See pages 5-9 for further details. The Relay Output of TLM can alternatively be used to Control a 3rd Party Electrical Device (not supplied). An Accessory Device Connection box (with 2 screw terminals) is supplied for this purpose and connects to TLM via a short supplied cable. TLM s Dry Relay Contacts are rated at 12V/1A. If these voltages are exceeded by the use of a 3 rd party device, damage will occur to TLM and correct operation will be lost. IMPORTANT NOTES It is the responsibility of the user or installer to ensure that TLM and any connected accessories are tested at appropriate intervals for correct operation. Although TLM devices have proved to be extremely reliable over many years of operation, events such as telephone line surges, power surges, connection issues or even failure of TLM are all possible. TLM is designed to work on a conventional analog PSTN Telephone Line. If TLM is to be used on a Fiber, Cable or other Analog or Digital emulated telephone line, then the performance of TLM will depend on the accuracy of the emulated service. TLM should be tested thoroughly to ensure that it is compatible with the emulated telephone line. Page 2 Natcomm

3 IMPORTANT INSTALLATION DETAILS TELEPHONE LINE CONNECTION 1. Single Telephone Socket Operation TLM can be connected to ANY Telephone Socket on the Telephone Line. If another Telephone Device is to be used on the same Telephone Socket, then it MUST be connected using a Double Telephone Adaptor (not supplied) to the LINE OUTPUT Port of TLM, to prevent their use causing TLM to activate with each use. 2. Multiple Telephone Socket Operation a) The LINE IN port of TLM MUST be connected to the Incoming Telephone Line (which then connects to the first socket on your line). b) The LINE OUT port of TLM MUST be then be connected to all Telephone sockets on the Telephone Line. c) This installation procedure MUST be carried out by a suitably qualified telephone technician. d) This will ensure that there are NO Parallel connected Telephone Devices used on the same line, which would cause TLM to respond as if the Telephone Line was Cut or Disconnected. POWER CONNECTION 3. A 12VDC Power Adaptor is supplied with TLM. It can also be operated from a 12VAC source, with a minimum capacity of 300mA. If an alternative 12VDC (min 300mA) source is used such as a UPS or battery backup, input polarity is not important. OPERATION WITH ADSL TLM can operate on a Telephone Line which also has an ADSL service. TLM will not affect the ADSL operation. ADSL will not affect the operation of TLM. If ADSL is used on the same line, the ADSL FILTER should be fitted ahead of the TLM device. If you are using TLM on a Fiber or Cable line that provides your Internet Service, then an ADSL filter will not be required. Natcomm Page 3

4 1. Telephone Line Connection Page 4 Natcomm INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS The incoming Telephone Line MUST connect to the LINE IN port of TLM. All telephones and telephone devices MUST connect to the LINE OUT port of TLM. This is extremely important because Telephone Devices connected in Parallel to the same Telephone Line as TLM will activate the TLM Relay whenever they are used. See page 3 for important details. 2. Accessory Device Connection (Strobe Alert, Tone Alert or a 3 rd Party Device) Connect the appropriate Accessory to the Relay Output port of TLM, using the supplied telephone cable. If the Accessory is to be located remote to TLM, then you can use solid core cable (CAT3 or CAT5) fitted with the smaller RJ10 (4P4C) plugs on either end to connect the devices together. The Polarity of the cable wires to the Natcomm Accessory is not important. If you plan to separate the Accessory from TLM by more than 100 Yards (100m), you should connect a separate 12VDC power source into the Power Input port of TLM to ensure that TLM is getting sufficient power. It is critical that the Accessory receives sufficient power to operate correctly. Correct operation should be confirmed and then checked at regular intervals that are appropriate for the application. The Polarity of an additional 12VDC Power Adaptor or UPS input is not important. 3. POWER ADAPTOR CONNECTION CONNECT the supplied 12VDC Power Adaptor and switch it. If you plan to use an alternative 12VDC source, you must ensure that a minimum of 0.75A is made available to TLM at all times, so that there is sufficient power for the attached Natcomm Accessory, or 300mA if you are connecting a 3 rd party accessory not powered by TLM. Polarity of the 12VDC input is not important. 4. TEST OPERATION Thoroughly test your TLM and Accessory installation to ensure that it is operating correctly. It is important that you test for the correct operation of this equipment at intervals appropriate for its application.

5 NATCOMM ACCESSORIES Strobe Alert Our Strobe Alert accessory connects to the Relay Output port of TLM via the expandable curly cord cable supplied with this accessory. This supplied cable can be substituted for a CAT3/CAT5 (solid core) cable fitted with appropriate RJ10 (4P4C) plugs. Where a substitute cable is used, you should test for repeated reliable operation. Long cables will result in a reduction in the power delivered to Strobe Alert. For this reason, there is a Power Input socket fitted to Strobe Alert, to allow for connection of a direct 12VDC source. Generally, good quality cabling will allow for operation up to 100 yards (100m). The need for an additional 12VDC power connection can be determined by repeatedly testing Strobe Alert for correct operation. If you need to fit an additional 12VDC power source, it should provide a minimum of 500mA. Polarity of the DC input does not matter. A Dip Switch is located on the underside of Strobe Alert, which will allow you to change the Flashing ON and OFF pattern output by Strobe Alert. There are 4 different Flash Cadences to choose from : 1) Constant Flash (upon detection of remote relay closure) 2) Flash is 2 Seconds ON, 2 Seconds OFF (with remote relay closure) 3) Flash is 2 Seconds ON, 4 Seconds OFF (with remote relay closure) 4) Flash is 4 Seconds ON, 4 Seconds OFF (with remote relay closure) Natcomm Page 5

8 NATCOMM ACCESSORIES Tone Alert with Volume Control A Volume Pot located on the underside of Tone Alert, which will allow you to set the Volume of the Tone Output to suit your requirements. Tone Alert can output a volume suitable for Office areas of between sq ft. Where larger areas need to receive a Tone Alert, an amplified Audio Jack (Standard 1/8 3.5mm) is provided which can connect to Amplified External Speakers. A simple inexpensive Amplified PC Speaker with Volume control can be used for larger areas. For Very Large areas, this audio output can be connected to an external amplifier which can output the Alert Tone to as many speakers as is required. The Dip Switch located on the underside of Tone Alert, can also output the FREQUENCY of the Tone Output. You can output a 400hz tone for Alert requirements. (400hz is a comfortable frequency ideal for Alert requirements) OR You can output an 1100hz tone for Alarm requirements (1100hz is a higher frequency ideal for Alarm requirements) Page 8 Natcomm

10 UNPOWERED 3RD PARTY DEVICE CONNECTION The relay output from TLM can also be used to advise an external 3rd party electrical device that the telephone line has been cut or disconnected. The relay output from TLM is Dry Contact (Rated at 1A at 12V). TLM s relay contacts connect to the center 2 pins of the Relay Output socket. The Relay Output socket is an RJ9 (4P4C) format to prevent inadvertent connection of the telephone line or a telephone device. This output is ideal for many devices where a simple unpowered relay closure is required. A Connection Box with a short cable to connect it to TLM is provided to allow for quick and easy connection to the external 3rd part device. The Connection Box has 2 screw terminals for cable connection to the external 3rd part device. The Connection Box screw terminals also connect to the center 2 pins of the 4P4C RJ socket of TLM, when connected to TLM via the supplied cable. See the diagram on page 12 for further detail. If your 3rd party electrical device requires powered output from the TLM relay contacts, please refer to page 12.. Important Note : The Dry Contact Relay within TLM is rated at 12V and 1Amp. If you exceed either of these parameters, permanent damage will result. Page 10 Natcomm

12 POWERED 3RD PARTY DEVICE CONNECTION The relay output from TLM can also be used to advise an external 3rd party electrical device that the telephone line has been cut or disconnected. The relay output from TLM is Dry Contact (Rated at 1A at 12V). You can connect a power source AC or DC up to 12V and 1Amp to the relay contacts if required. In this situation 1 leg of the wires connecting to the TLM relay should come from an external power source (not supplied). A Connection Box with a short cable to connect it to TLM is provided to allow for quick and easy connection of this power source. The Connection Box screw terminals will then connect the power source to one of the center 2 pins of the 4P4C RJ socket of TLM via the supplied cable. When the TLM relay closes, power will then output through the other center pin of the 4P4C RJ socket of TLM to the remote electrical device. When the relay opens, this power flow will be removed. See the diagram on page 4 for further detail. Important Notes : 1) The Dry Contact Relay within TLM is rated at 12V and 1Amp. If you exceed either of these parameters, permanent damage will result. 2) Do NOT use the 12V power adaptor supplied with TLM as a power source for the connection box or 3rd part accessory. Doing so can cause TLM to not function correctly due to power brown out. Page 12 Natcomm

13 ENSURING RELIABLE OPERATION As TLM is often used for Important or even Critical applications, there are several important considerations that you consider and monitor at intervals appropriate for its application. REGULAR OPERATIONAL TESTING It is important that the equipment is installed correctly and thoroughly tested following the initial installation. It is also important that you test for the correct operation of TLM and any connected Accessory devices at regular intervals appropriate for its application. BATTERY BACK UP TLM is designed to operate with a 12VDC (or even 12VAC) input. This will allow TLM to be connected to a Battery Back Up source that may be made available for the application and other equipment that it may be used with. To facilitate this, TLM uses a bridge rectifier in the power input circuit which will allow TLM to operate correctly regardless of the Polarity input. It will also allow use of a 12VAC input should this be preferred. OPERATION ON EMULATED TELEPHONE LINES TLM is designed to work with a conventional Analog PSTN Telephone Line. TLM will also work correctly with accurate Emulated Analog or Digital telephone line sources such as via Fiber Cable or Coaxial Cable, providing they produce an accurate Analog emulation of a normal PSTN service specification. If you are using an Emulated Telephone line, you should test operation of TLM and its accessory thoroughly before commissioning the system. ALTERNATIVE BACK UP LINE Where TLM is used to monitor Important or Critical applications, you may like to consider the additional use of the NATCOMM Line Selector device which will automatically connect your Telephone Device to a second back up telephone line, should the main line be lost, disconnected or cut. 14 TWO LINE SELECTOR Our LINE SELECTOR switch is designed to allow a Single Telephone Device to Connect to Two Telephones Line for Incoming and Outgoing calls. It can be used with ANY Combination of the following Telephone Lines : PSTN Lines PBX Analog Extensions FXO Ports FXS Ports ATA Output Cellular Gateway Output With LINE SELECTOR a Telephone Device can : Dial Out on Two Lines Receive Calls on Two Lines Operation One of the Two attached lines is set as the DEFAULT LINE (LINE 1) and the other line is then set up as the ALTERNATIVE LINE (LINE 2). Both Incoming and Outgoing calls to/from the attached TELEPHONE DEVICE can take place on either line. Outgoing Calls from the TELEPHONE DEVICE can be made on either line. LINE SELECTOR will always choose the DEFAULT LINE (Line 1), unless it is busy, lost, disconnected or cut. In this situation, LINE SELECTOR will automatically connect the Telephone Device to the alternative line (Line 2). Incoming Calls on EITHER LINE will be automatically routed to the attached device. Busy Out facility. If the attached device is already connected to a call, the other Line can be rendered Busy as well by setting a Dip Switch located on the underside of the unit. This will prevent an Incoming Call not connecting to the attached Device. Page 14 Natcomm

15 FCC (USA) and IC (Canada) COMPLIANCE This product has been tested by an authorized independent laboratory to comply with all Telephone Line and Electromagnetic Compliance requirements for the USA and Canada. REQUIRED RADIO FREQUENCY STATEMENT This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC rules. It has also been tested and found to comply with the limits for CS-003 of the Industry Canada rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates and can radiate radio frequency energy within FCC and IC limits. If not installed and used in accordance with these instructions, it may be possible that it causes interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that the interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by testing with the TLM equipment turned off, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures: Increase the separation between the TLM equipment and the affected receiver. Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that of the receiver. Consult the dealer or an experienced technician for help. The user is responsible for freight costs to the repair point. The warrantor will be responsible for freight costs in returning this unit back to the user.
