1 64-Bit PCI to Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter Release Notes for Tru64 UNIX and OpenVMS Introduction These release notes contain late-breaking and supplemental information for the the Compaq StorageWorks 64-Bit PCI to Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter for Tru64 UNIX and OpenVMS. This information is periodically updated and available on the World Wide Web at URL The 64-Bit PCI to Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter (HBA) is a highperformance PCI option module that connects to devices attached through either a hub-based optical Fibre Channel arbitrated loop or a switch based optical Fibre Channel fabric. The HBA supports only short wave multi-mode connections. These release notes include all known issues or restrictions for using the HBA within a system configuration. Table 2 describes the Alpha server platforms with the associated number of adapters that are supported per operating system configuration. Refer to the Restrictions section in these release notes for known operating system and device restrictions. 6 6 64-bit Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter Release Notes for Tru64 UNIX and OpenVMS DS-KGPSA-CA Restrictions The minimum Revision of DS-KGPSA-CA firmware for Alpha platforms all Operating Systems is dd302a1.awc. The minimum Revision of the KGPSA-CA adapter hardware is FC Rev B Maximum length of the OPTICAL cable from the DS-KGPSA-CA to a hub or switch is 500 meters short wave multi mode 50/125 micron Fibre Channel Cable. Tru64 UNIX Restrictions Tru64 UNIX restrictions include: The KGPSA driver for Tru64 UNIX is built into the operating system. Tru64 UNIX V4.0x does not support the installation of the Operating System on an RA8000 or ESA Tru64 UNIX 4.0F, BL13, NHD2 or greater supports adapters in Fibre Channel switch topologies and in Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop topologies. Both KGPSA-BC and KGPSA-CA are supported. Cascaded switch support requires a Tru64 UNIX driver patch. Refer to Tru64 UNIX Driver and Console Software The HBA driver is built into the Tru64 UNIX operating systems and supported by Console software. For the supported versions of Tru64 UNIX operating systems and Console software, consult the HBA release notes included in this documentation package. Release notes are updated periodically and can be obtained from the Compaq website: Drill down through Services and Support to Adapter Support. See the documentation specific to your platform for detailed information on installing the appropriate operating system and Console software.

7 64-Bit PCI to Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter Release Notes for Tru64 UNIX and OpenVMS 7 WWIDMGR -SHOW ADAPTER / -SET ADAPTER Commands V5.6 SRM console and higher revisions have the capability of setting an HBA to run in arbitrated loop mode or in fabric (switch) mode. If an HBA in loop mode is connected to a switch, the results are unpredictable. The same is true for an HBA in fabric mode that is connected to a loop. By default, the console assumes a fabric topology. The SET ADAPTER command stores the selected topology into the NVRAM storage on the HBA. If the HBA is moved from one AlphaServer to another, this setting stays with the HBA. Console Revision V5.6 or greater supports the FCAL (loop) topology. A setting of loop is a valid setting in Console Revision V5.6, however, that setting prompts the console driver not to run. What this means is once the HBA has been set to loop topology, console commands such as show device or quick assign will not display any HBA s and their attached devices. Refer to the WWIDGR manual at the following location for detailed information on the SHOW ADAPTER and SET ADAPTER commands: NOTE: On some systems, such as the GS140, in order for the SHOW ADAPTER and SET ADAPTER commands to be accepted by the system, the console must first be set to diagnostic mode (set mode diag). This indicates that the NVRAM on the HBA has not been initialized and formatted. This is expected and can be corrected by issuing a SET ADAPTER command as described in the next section. SHOW ADAPTER display Figure 2 shows a display from WWIDMGR -SHOW ADAPTER where there are two HBAs in the system. See the following for a detailed look at a line item: [0] kgpsaa c921-05ab fabric fabric [0] Item Number. The bracketed value is used as a parameter to the item qualifier in the WWIDMGR -SET ADAPTER command. You can select which HBA to configure by its item number. An item number of 9999 selects all HBAs. Kgpsaa Adapter Mnemonic. Error messages and displays use this identifier c920-05ab WWN of the HBA. This value is used to identify the HBA to other nodes on the fibre channel link. Fabric Current Topology. This value is either fabric or loop. It indicates the mode in which the HBA is operating currently, during this WWIDMGR session. The current mode in which the HBA is running is not altered during a WWIDMGR session. Fabric Next Topology. This value can be fabric, loop, or unavail. It indicates the topology setting that is in the HBA s NVRAM. An unavail setting indicates the NVRAM is not formatted, a condition corrected by a SET ADAPTER command. A setting of fabric or loop indicates how the HBA is configured the next time the system is initialized.

The command format is: wwidmgr-set adapter -item<itemno> -topo<fabriciloop> where itemno is the bracketed value from the SHOW ADAPTER command. In Figure 3-3, you can change all HBA s from fabric to loop by specifying an itemno value of The init is shown at the end to emphasize that the setting in the running HBA is not changed until the next initialization. SET ADAPTER example OpenVMS Restrictions OpenVMS restrictions include: The DS-KGPSA-BC and the DS-KGPSA-CA driver for OpenVMS is built into the Operating System. The minimum revision of the operating system for the KGPSA-CA HBA is VMS OpenVMS only supports the DS-KGPSA-BC and DS-KGPSA-CA adapters in Fibre Channel switch topologies. The DS-KGPSA-BC and the DS-KGPSA-CA adapters require Alpha VMS V7.2-1 TIMA kit OVMS721_FIBRECHAN_V0200 Open VMS will not support the operation of the S3Trio video board and the DS-KGPSA-BC or DS-KGPSA-CA adapter in the same PCI bus.

10 10 64-bit Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter Release Notes for Tru64 UNIX and OpenVMS For large system configurations (many DS-KGPSA-CAs/devices and paths) the VMS install CD will not boot. It will hang if no DS-KGPSA- CAs are in the system; or it will crash (either INCONSTATE or IOMACHINECHK) if a DS-KGPSA-CA is installed in the system. The workaround is to perform a conversational boot (boot -fl 0,1) of the CD and at the sysboot prompt to increase the SYSGEN value of NPAGEVIR. The recommendation is to initially double the CD default of 8,388,608 Bytes. Rarely, on boots and reboots, a HBA s port does not come on line. The workaround is to unplug and then reseat the HBA s cable. Then run MC SYSMAN IO AUTO/LOG to bring the port on line. Using the SHOW DEV DG/MULTIPATH command is a quick way to determine if all of the paths are there after a boot. OpenVMS plans to provide a TIMA kit to solve this problem. "SHOW DEVICE may fail with a "virtual address space full" error on systems with more than 2400 Unit Control Blocks (UCBs). In multipath SCSI and FC configurations, there is a UCB for each path from the host to every storage device. Note that any procedure that calls SHOW DEVICE, such as CLUSTER_CONFIG, will also experience this problem. OpenVMS plans to provide a TIMA kit to solve this problem. Please refer to the web site for availability. In the meantime, these problems can be avoided by reducing the number of UCBs in the system, by removing host adapters or storage devices, or disconnecting redundant FC paths." Upgrading an OpenVMS System to V7.2-1 This procedure is for existing OpenVMS systems being upgraded to V7.2-1 that did not have any DS-KGPSA-BC adapters installed and you are now adding DS-KGPSA-CA Adapters. NOTE: This procedure is not be required for upgrading to VMS if there are existing DS-KGPSA-BC adapters in the system with a path to the intended system disk. 1. Boot the V7.2-1 installation CD and create a V7.2-1 system disk. 2. Boot the new system disk and install the FC TIMA kit images. 3. Install the DS-KGPAS-CA adapter into the system. Refer to the user guide for the installation procedure for the DS-KGPSA-CA Adapter. 4. Boot the system from the non-fc system disk. 5. For a FC system disk, perform an image backup from the non-fc system disk to the targeted FC system.
