1 MartMod Mk5 Thank you for choosing what we believe is the best voice modulator and dalek electronics system that you can buy. For clarification, the MartMod that was produced by Vince (with Martin's help), Mark and Glenn up until the end of 2015 was the Mk3 and was on revision 7 of that design. If your wondering what happened to the Mk4, it didn't make it past the design phase, the Mk5 assimilated it. The MartMod Mk5 uses state of the art modern components that are not about to be obsoleted. The modulation is digital, the amplifiers are digital, resulting in lower power consumption and longer battery life compared to the Mk3 and competitors units. Features Adjustable modulation rates covering all dalek genres. Microphone gain control, caters for variances in microphone performance. Bass and Treble controls to allow for differences in microphone and speaker performance. Feedback reduction to address howling. Gun interface provides single button gun firing, pump operation and gun sound. PTT support, this is optional and allows you to un-mute the dalek voice with a button. (Press to talk). Auxiliary audio input socket, if you really must make non-dalek noises. Power amplifiers ranging from 9 to 60 watts. 12v and 24v operation. Interfaces to dome lights and gun (water pump or other gun firing features). None of the controls hidden inside the case or needing special tools to adjust (yes a competitor does this). No training wires out of the mod, all cables terminate on the case in suitable connectors. PTT and gun firing buttons are external and can be located in the most convenient location for the user. Choice of enclosures and amplifiers to suit your budget. Protected from reverse battery connection. Amplifiers packaged to be user replaceable should an incident occur with the speaker wiring, replacement amplifiers can be ordered from your MartMod builder.

Power connector via a 4 pin XLR socket. Full description of these controls. (A) PTT and Gun fire connector The push to talk feature is optional and is disabled if no connector is inserted into the socket. If a connector is inserted, the voice feature is muted unless a switch is connected between the L and Ground terminals of the supplied jack socket to terminal block adapter. For Push To Talk connect a switch via wires between L and Ground. For Gun operation connect a switch via wires between R and Ground. Should you not wish to use PTT but still wish to use the gun fire option, connect a wire between L and Ground. What this does is sets PTT to always on and you connect the gun switch between R and Ground. In use, PTT will mute your microphone unless you press the button, so when you want the dalek to speak, press the button. The gun fire button when pressed will start the gun sound playing and whilst you are pressing the button the water pump will be energised. If you release the button before the end of the gun sound, the sound keeps playing but the pump is turned off. If you keep the button pressed to the end of the gun sound, the gun sound will play again and the pump will stay energised until you release the button and then the sound will play to the end. Note that voice is turned off whilst the gun sound is playing. One of the reasons is that this means the dome lights are not operating at the same time as the water pump and this limits the current that the MartMod and it's wiring are having to handle. Note: Because the wiring between these switches and the MartMod are only providing signals and not taking the current of the water pump motor, you don't need to use high current rated wires to the /switches. You do however between the MartMod and the pump/battery. (B) Microphone connector. This is a 3.5mm connector that is designed to take an eletret microphone, as used in PC headsets.

3 (c) Microphone gain control. This adjusts the microphone pre-amplifier. Setting it too low means the voice will not get modulated. Setting it too high will cause the voice to be distorted. Note that another side effect of this being set too high is random noises coming from the modulator, so find a good position that gives voice but no extra noises. (D) Modulation rate. Use lower rates to sound like a movie dalek, medium rates for an NSD and high rates for the classics. You have total control of the modulation speed. (E) Volume control. Sets the level of sound going into the amplifier from all sources (voice/gun/line input). (F) Speaker output. Plug your speaker into this socket. Note: use a speaker load between 4 to 8 ohms. (G) Second speaker output. Unless you selected amplifier option 1, you have a second channel to connect a speaker load between 4 to 8 ohms. (H) Auxiliary input. Connect your phone or tablet to this socket to play other sounds. Adjust the volume on the external device to match the level of the voice from the modulator. (I) Bass control. (J) Treble control. (K) Power switch. (L) Power socket. This is a 4 way XLS connector on the Mk5. Unfortunately because of the additional features we could not stay compatible with the Mk3 wiring scheme. Conversion leads are available from your builder that will allow you to use a Mk5 inside a dalek wired for Mk3.

4 Notes regarding amplifiers and power An amplifier circuit will have it's maximum rating and to achieve that output power you would need the correct supply voltage and to have the correct speaker attached to the amplifier. Speakers usually come as either 8-ohms or 4-ohms. If you connect two 4-ohm speakers to an amplifier in parallel, they make a 2-ohm load. The Mk3 MartMod has an amplifier that is rated at 18W into 2-ohms but only when run at 18 volts. Nobody used more than 12 volts so the most you could get from the Mk3 was about 12 watts, bear that in mind when looking at the amplifier options that follow. The Mk5 MartMod uses digital amplifiers and these are rated down to a 4-ohm minimum speaker load. Do not put two 4-ohm speakers across a Mk5 MartMod output. If you have a pair of 4-ohm speakers, either wire them in series (making 8-ohms) or choose an amplifier option that can handle two separate 4-ohm loads. More will become clear in amplifier options Amplifier options There are 4 options for amplifier configurations. Giving increasing power and features. Option 1 A single 20W amplifier. The 20W amplifier requires an 18v power source to give out the whole 20W and it must be into an 8-ohm speaker (that could be 2x 4-ohms in series). But 18v is not practical so getting 20W out of this amplifier is unlikely. What you do get with a 12v supply voltage is 13W across a 4-ohm speaker or 9W across an 8-ohm. This is going to be slightly less than the Mk3 in terms of output so I suggest using this option if your only running in quiet environments but this is our starting point Option 2 A pair of 20W amplifiers. Have two of the 20W amplifiers in the same MartMod. You can then run 13W into one 4-ohm speaker and 13W into the other 4-ohm speaker, giving 26W of output. The MartMod will have two speaker outputs for this and all the following options. Option 3 A dual 15W amplifier. At 12v this amplifier will give 10W of output into 2x channels with 8-ohm speakers or 15W into 2x channels with 4-ohm speakers, that's 20W total at 8-ohms and 30W total at 4-ohms. Option 4 A dual 30W amplifier. At 12v this amplifier will give you 10W per channel (20W total) into an 8-ohm speaker. With 4- ohm speakers it will give you 15W per channel (30W total) which is no better than option 3, but this amplifier can run from 24v into 8-ohm speakers (not 4-ohm) and you will get 30W per channel which is 60W of output! So amplifier options 1-3 are for 12v operation and you can use 8 or 4 ohm speakers. Option 4 means you can run at 12v or 24v and with 8-ohm speakers at 24v you can have 60W of output. The only consideration when running at 24v is that you wire your dome lights in series and you will need a 24v water gun pump. These are available because trucks run at 24v and have windscreen washers!

5 Here is a summary of the options (with all channels driving speakers); Amplifier Max Output channels 12v 8-Ohms 12v 4-Ohms 24v 8-Ohms Option 1 1x 20W 1 9W 13W n/a Option 2 2x 20W 2 18W 26W n/a Option 3 Dual 15W 2 20W 30W n/a Option 4 Dual 30W 2 20W 30W 60W Speaker wiring The MartMod is supplied with pre-connected speaker plugs and wire, you can connect these directly to one speaker of 4-Ohms or 8-Ohms. If you need more than one speaker on a channel, here are your options. Example of parallel wiring showing how 2 speakers each of 8 Ohms result in a 4 Ohm load. Both speakers will be working at their rating. Example of serial wiring showing how 2 speakers each of 4 Ohms result in an 8 Ohm load. Each speaker is doing less than it's rated output so there is less demand on the amplifier compared to having just one speaker. These speaker drawings show one channel. For options 2-4 you would have two sets of such speakers. Note: Two 4-ohm speakers wired in parallel result in a 2-ohm load. Whilst this is ok for the Mk3 MartMod, this will damage the amplifier(s) on this, the Mk5 MartMod.

6 Main Wiring I suggest the following wiring scheme (assuming all features of the mod are used). Run a red wire capable of handling 10A or more from the battery to a bank of at least 3 fuse holders. This wire should connect to one side of each of the fuses in the bank. Run one wire with a rating of 6A from the fuse bank to the red wire of the MartMod power plug. Insert a 5A fuse in the corresponding fuse holder location. Run one wire with a rating of 6A to your dome light area from a second fuse connection. See dome light wiring section for specifics on wiring the dome lights and selecting a fuse. Run one wire with a rating of 6A to your water pump positive terminal from a third fuse connection and insert a 5A fuse in the fuse holder. You now have three positive wire runs. Using the existing orange wire on the MartMod power plug (extending using 6A wire if necessary) run this to the dome lights location as the negative connection. Again see the dome light wiring section for details. Using the existing blue wire on the MartMod power plug (extending using 6A wire if necessary) connect this to the water pump negative terminal. Using the existing black wire on the MartMod power plug (extending using 6A wire if necessary) connect this to the battery negative terminal. Dome Light Wiring and Fuse Sizes Dome lights have their own section because of the issues of LED vs lamps and 12v vs 24v. Before you get here you should have fed two wires towards your dome lights as covered above. The difference between LEDs and lamps is that LEDs have to be connected + to + and to -. Lamps are not polarity sensitive. Also LEDs draw much less power so use a 1A fuse if you have LEDs and a 5A fuse if you have filament lamps. The difference between 12v and 24v is whether you parallel or series wire the dome lights. Use parallel for 12v and series for 24v. I have assumed that your using 12v LEDs or lamps. See the speaker section for examples of parallel and series wiring including polarity, just imaging the speakers are LEDs or lamps. The red wire from the fuse holder is positive and the orange wire from the MartMod power socket is negative. So the possible combinations are; 1. LEDs on 12v = 1A fuse and parallel wiring 2. LEDs on 24v = 1A fuse and series wiring 3. Lamps on 12v = 5A fuse and parallel wiring 4. Lamps on 24v = 5A fuse and series wiring

7 Feedback suppression The Mk5 MartMod has features built into it's software that are intended to reduce and in most cases eliminate feedback. This doesn't mean that the dalek owner is exonerated from all layout issues and if you get feedback it's not the modulator that is at fault. Feedback occurs because the microphone is picking up the sound coming out of the speakers and with or without feedback suppression, it is bad design to put microphones too close to speakers. The indention of the design is to try to reduce the occurrence and impact of feedback if it occurs and independent opinions from people who have tested the prototypes are that it is much better. The software may develop in this area as the product is more widely used and it is to some degree tunable in the code (but it requires the microprocessor to be re-programmed).
