It allows easy and fast building of prototypes and reduces time-to-market significantly when used in the final product. The standard version features a PCM5121 chipset from Texas Instruments which offers best price/performance ratio. On request it is also available with PCM5100 or PCM5142. The PlainDAC module comes with a standard RCA connector (red/white), has four 2.75 mm mounting holes as well as a convenient 40 pin FPC connector for feeding power and all external signals. For volume orders we can provide several interconnection adapters for this 40 pin connector. For prototyping purpose and signal integrity measurement there is an unpopulated 10 way 2.54 mm pin header to gain access to the I2S + I2C bus as well as the power supply. 4 5 Device Comparison The standard version of PlainDAC is equipped with the PCM5121 DAC IC from Texas Instruments. For volume orders there is the possibility to equip it with either a PCM5100 or a PCM5142 depending on the customer requirements. See the following table for comparison. Great care was taken during development to implement useful protection to minimize potential ESD damage. There are two 5 channel 3V3 unidirectional TVS diodes to protect all the digital input and output signal pins. The 5 volt input and the both analog output channels are each protected by a separate 5V bidirectional TVS diode. 6

7 10 General Usage Guidelines The PlainDAC module can be used for prototyping and small volume manufacturing. Before using PlainDAC always make sure that you have understood and compile with your local laws and regulatory regarding prototyping with electronic devices. PlainDAC is NOT sold as a final and/or certified end product. It is designed to work best when using the 40 pin FPC input connector either in combination with our PolyCore1 platform or one of the adapter boards. Remember that when using the unpopulated P2 header for feeding the digital signals you are creating little stubs on the PCB between P2 and P3. This is okay for prototyping but you should keep that in mind when feeding high frequency master clocks. 8 11 Setup and Operating Instructions Always disconnect any power supplies before attaching or removing cables! Either connect the PlainDAC module to your host system using a 40 pin FPC cable or jumper wires. Also connect your audio equipment to the both RCA connectors. After double checking all cables for their correct position insert the power supply of your host. The standard version of PlainDAC comes with a PCM5121 DAC chip. If your host can supply an audio master clock, PlainDAC will play at full volume as soon as there is valid audio data coming in via I2S. If your host only supplies BCK, LRCK and DATA the PCM5121 needs several instructions via I2C to generate the master clock internally using PLL. Refer to the documentation of your host system and the PCM51XX Linux driver for how to do this in detail. Both I2C address pins are internally pulled low through 10 K resistors. The address on the I2C bus is 0x4c in this case. Alternatively, you can connect one or both externally to 3V3. This results in up to 4 different addresses. 12 Regulatory information PlainDAC generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and has not been tested for compliance with any regulatory requirements (e.g. CE, FCC). PlainDAC is not sold as a finished product and may not be resold or otherwise marked unless all required regulatory authorizations are first obtained. 13 Safety Warnings User must read and apply the user guide / datasheet and other available documentation provided by regarding the PlainDAC prior to handling or using PlainDAC, including without limitation any warning or restriction notices. The notices contain important safety information related to, for example, temperatures and voltages. PlainDAC is intended to be used solely by technically qualified, professional electronics experts who are familiar with the dangers and application risks associated with handling electrical mechanical components, systems, subsystems. Use PlainDAC in laboratory test environment only. Never leave it unattended while in use. Never operate PlainDAC outside of it s recommended operating specifications otherwise it may cause personal injury or death or property damage. 8
