Verify that one of the station sets associated with the Central Office line rings at the control unit. Pick up the telephone handset and answer the call to check for acceptable voice transmission levels. For this installation, if voice transmission levels are: Acceptable: the 122A OPRE Remote Access, DISA, or Conferencing installation is complete. Not Acceptable: adjust the gain settings. Refer to Adjusting Gain Switches on the 122A OPRE in the next section of this booklet. After adjusting the gain switches for acceptable voice transmission levels, the 122A OPRE DISA/Conferencing installation is complete. After all the connections are completely attached, be sure to hang the 122A OPRE unit on the wall for a wall mount installation. Adjusting the Gain Switches on the 122A OPRE The 122A OPRE unit provides variable gain for voice transmission levels. The voice transmission levels can be adjusted using the switches labelled GAIN located on the 122A OPRE front panel. The level of gain is dependent on the installation of the 122A OPRE unit and may not be necessary. The gain setting is dependent on the loop lengths associated with the installation: short loop lengths may require zero (no gain) to moderate gain adjustments and longer loop lengths may require moderate to high gain adjustments. 12

20 Table 1 provides guidelines for setting gain using the 122A OPRE switches if the loop length is known for either of the following installation configurations: Off-premises and extended range: loop length from the jack labelled OUT to the remote station Remote Access DISA, or Conferencing: loop length from the Central Office to the jack labelled IN. Either of two methods may be used to determine the correct gain setting for a given OPRE installation. One involves measuring the loop resistance with an ohmmeter, then determining loop length from the measurement. The second method requires measuring AC output of a DTMF telephone at the telephone and then at the OPRE to determine the loss in the line. Note that either method requires at least two people, and/or that the technician make several trips between the OPRE installation site and the off-premises site. Method 1: Before connecting the off-premises line to the OPRE, place a short across Tip and Ring of the line at either end. At the other end, measure the resistance from Tip to Ring. Divide the resistance (in ohms) by 83. The result equals the loop length in thousands of feet. Now refer to Table 1 on the following page for the correct gain setting. Method 2: With the OPRE completely installed, verify operation of the off-premises telephone by going off-hook and listening for dial tone. If possible, place a call to another station on the system. Have the receiving end place the call on hold. With an AC voltmeter, measure the voltage across Tip and Ring at the telephone with dialpad 1 depressed. At the OPRE, measure the AC voltage across Tip and Ring on the IN port. Adjust the gain switches until the voltage measurements are as closely matched as possible. Retrieve the call from hold at the called station, and release the dialpad. Similar procedures should be used when installing an OPRE between an incoming CO line and a line port of a swtich. With either method it will be necessary to assess the level and quality of normal speech during a call. Refer to Table 1 and adjust the gain up or down as necessary. NOTE: Excessive gain can cause cross-talk or squealing on the line. 13

21 Table 1: Gain Switch Settings for the 122A OPRE Switch Gain (db) Loop Length (ft.)* OFF OFF OFF OFF NE to to to to to 11,000 11,000 to 13,000 13,000 to 15,000 15,000 to 17,000 * 26 AWG NOTE: Be sure to complete the 122A OPRE installation connections after adjusting the gain swtiches for any installation configuration in this booklet. Grounding Multiple Units Multiple OPREs may be grounded at the same outlet provided the groundng screw is of sufficient length to securely fasten the ground wire terminals. Up to six OPREs may be grounded with a single 12 AWG ground wire by connecting the units together with short lengths (6 in. max.) of the enclosed ground wire, with the terminals properly installed on each end. The total length of the ground wire must not exceed 10 feet. 14
