4 NPR Page 4 Introduction After the issue of NPR 5163 "Electrotechnical drawings. Examples for control technology", it became apparent that a need exists in the industry for a Code of Practice covering the total field of process control installations. In course of the preparation of this Code of Practice the fact was established that parts of this field were already covered by national and international standards. In the field of process instrumentation the following standards have already been issued. NEN Drawings. Symbols for instrumentation. Basic symbols for the process instrumentation NEN Drawings. Symbols for instrumentation. Detailed symbols for the process instrumentation These standards refer primarily to the symbols for measuring in and control of processes. Standards for the preparation of pure logic diagrams for protection, control and signalling in process control installations, are still missing. This Code of Practice covers guidelines on which the relationship between the logical part and the interface, particularly between the process incuts and the logic part as well as the logic part and the process outputs, can be laid down unambiguously. The diagrams concerned must contain valid information for the development phase, as well as for the process management. In the logic part the applied symbols comply with already existing symbols, except the symbols B4.2 and B4.3. In view of the number of disciplines, which are involved in the completion of a process control installation, an usersfriendly design was chosen and the most usefull logic symbols are inserted. Naturally it may be supplemented by symbols of NEN 5152 or IEC publication The logic elements are taken from IEC publication , because this section of NEN 5152 is out of date and must be updated. Because of this, the committee has set up in co-operation with NEC 3 "Symbolen en tekeningen" a working group to prepare this publication as much as possible making use of existing standards. 7 NPR 5164-Page 7 Scope This Code of Practice gives symbols and guidelines for the preparation of pure logic diagrams for process control installation. In these diagrams information is laid down primarily regarding the inputs and outputs of the logic part, see figure 1. 9 NPR Page 9 SECTION ONE - TECHNICAL PART 3 Definitions 3.1 pure logic diagram (Process control): A diagram in which the logic relationship between output and input variables of sub-systems of a process control system has been laid down, regardless the technical implementation. The following terms have been taken from IEC publication: "Terms and Definitions in Industrial Process Measurement and Control" (in course of preparation). 3.2 control system: A system in which deliberate guidance or manipulation of one or more variables is used to achieve a prescribed state. Note It is subdivided into a controlling system and a controlled system. 3.3 (industrial) process: A set of operations which basically perform a physical or chemical transformation or a series of such transformations. Note Other processes such as transportation and/or temporary storage of matter of energy, transmission of information, may be considered as a part of industrial processes. 3.4 process control: The regulation or manipulation of variables influencing the behaviour of a process in order to meet specified objectives (NEN 3009, modified). 3.5 analogue signal: A signal the information parameter of which may assume all values of a given range. 3.6 digital signal: A signal the information parameter of which may assume any value out of a set of discrete values which are represented by numbers. 3.7 input signal: A signal applied to the input of a device, element or system. 3.8 output signal: A signal delivered by a device, element or system. 3.9 binary signal: Quantized signal with only two possible values time response:the variation with time of an output variable of a system, produced by a specified variation of one of the input variables automatic control: Control in which a direct or indirect human manipulation of the final controlling element is not needed manual control: Control in which a direct or indirect human manipulation of the final controlling element is carried out limiting control: Type of control the action of which only takes effect if a given process variable to be limited transgresses predetermined limits high limiting control: A type of control the action of which only takes effect if a given process variable exceeds a predetermined high limit low limiting control: A type of control the action of which only takes effect if a given process variable is below a predetermined low limit continuous control: Type of control in which the reference variable and controlled variable are taken continuously in time to generate the manipulated variable by a continuous action binary control: Control in which binary signals are transmitted, processed and stored logic control: Control in which binary output signals are generated from binary input signals by boolean operations automatic control system: A control system which operates without human intervention. It is subdivided into a controlling system and a controlled system controlled system: System on which control is exerted.
