Bulletin ABDE Service Bulletin (This bulletin and all other active bulletins are downloadable from our website at Bulletin ABDE Page 1 of 5 Date: 01/30/2003 SUBJECT: Frymaster Computers & Controllers Service Notes This bulletin cancels and replaces Service Bulletins BDE, ABDE, AD, ABDE, ABDE, AD, ABDE, ABDE, ABDE, BE, ABD, and ABDE Remove these bulletins from your active files. This bulletin addresses the following topics: McDonald s M2000 Computer Notes Page 1 McDonald s M2000 Programming Error Page 2 CM III.5 Computer Notes Page 3 Spaghetti Magic III (SMS III) Computer Error Messages Page 5 McDonald s M2000 Computer Notes The M2000 computer replaced the M100B in production units on 4/1/2002 in the U.S. and on 6/1/2002 internationally. The M100B is no longer supported and no core credit is available for out-of-warranty M100B computers. If an M100B computer still in warranty is replaced with an M2000, a U.S. $50.00 core credit will be applied with return of the M100B computer to Frymaster. The M2000 is not a direct replacement for the M100B. It must be ordered as a kit, (Non-CE) or (CE), which includes a new bezel, speaker and other mounting hardware. Previously published part numbers for multiple-computer kits are no longer active. The computer in the kit works with either gas or electric fryers. A 10 percent discount is available on the M2000 computer when a McDonald s restaurant replaces all existing computers with the new unit. The discount is available only on orders of four or more computers and the computer order must be separate from other orders. It must include the fryer serial numbers, store number and address in the body of the text. The service M2000 computer, (Non-CE) or (CE), is designed to replace an existing M2000 computer and does not include the retrofit mounting hardware. These computers are not similarly discounted.
Bulletin ABDE Page 2 of 5 M2000 Programming Error When all the programming buttons of a M2000 computer are not assigned products, some M2000 computers will exhibit an odd failure. The problem occurs when an unused product button is pressed before a cook channel button in a mistaken attempt to start a cook cycle. The failure was caused by an anomaly in an automated programmer used to prepare the M2000 computers. The programmer has been corrected and the problem eliminated in computers built after 10/19/01. When the odd button sequence is entered (usually product button number 5 is pressed followed by a cook cycle button), the computer reveals the failure by displaying Low Temp and continuing to call for heat. Pressing the temperature button will show a setpoint of 35 F. Pressing the temperature button again will show the oil temperature rising above normal setpoints. Computers exhibiting this behavior should be turned off immediately. Follow the procedure below to eliminate the possibility of the failure recurring. Also this procedure should be followed when performing a start up on M2000-equipped fryers. If it doesn t appear, press left or right cook channel button until FR FRIES appears. With FR FRIES in the left display, press both cook channel buttons under the right display. YES appears once in display on a full pot and twice in display on a split pot. Press each product button, ensuring the LED in the top of the button illuminates.
Bulletin ABDE Page 3 of 5 With each button s LED illuminated, turn the computer off using the right ON/OFF button. The computer can now be programmed as described in the operational manual. CM III.5 Computer Notes In December 1999, Frymaster began manufacturing a new generation of CM III computers, commonly referred to as CM III.5. From the operator s perspective, there is no difference the computer looks the same and is programmed and operated in exactly the same way as the original CM IIIs and is fully interchangeable with those computers, but there are several differences that affect how servicers work with the computer. CM III.5 computers are distinguished from CM III computers by the presence of a 4-pin and a 15-pin connector located near the bottom center of the computer back (see illustration below). The factory uses the 4-pin connector to enter the parameter data for the specific fryer the computer will be used on. It has no field use. All CM III.5 computers have a label that shows the model number, item number (part number), serial number, and CPU version number. Some CM III.5 computers have a second label, as shown in the illustration. The second label is used when generic computers are configured for a specific application. Always look for the second label and, if present, use the Configured P/N number from that label when ordering a replacement computer. Every computer has a data label showing the model number, item number, serial number, and CPU version number. Some, but not all, CM III.5-based computers will have an additional label showing the Configured P/N. 4-Pin Connector 15-Pin Connector All of the previous programming procedures remain the same, but two new features have been added: 1. If the display reads CALL TECH, the memory chip or its support circuit has failed. The computer cannot be repaired in the field and must be returned to the factory.
Bulletin ABDE Page 4 of 5 2. A new code has been added. To determine the configuration of the computer when it left the factory, press and enter code 165R. The software version number will be displayed in the left window and the last four numbers of the computer part number will be displayed in the right window. For example, a CM III.5 computer for an H50 full vat fryer ( ) will display in the left window and 3706 in the right window. NOTE: The version number and part number do not change if the computer is reconfigured in the field. Like the original CM III, the CM III.5 can be reconfigured in the field for gas or electric, full or dual vat, and timer or controller operation. Various melt cycle times can also be specified. However, the reconfiguration procedure is different. To enter the reconfiguration mode, ground pin 8, press, and enter code (If using an MTB310A test box, flip the TEST switch to the ON position to ground pin 8.) NOTE: This is a sequential process; to leave a value unchanged, press to skip to the next step. GAS will be displayed in the left window and either a 0 or a 1 will be displayed in the right widow. 0 indicates the computer is configured for an electric fryer; 1 indicates it is configured for a gas fryer. Press 0 or 1 to toggle back and forth between electric and gas. Press. SPLt will be displayed in the left window and either a 0 or a 1 will be displayed in the right window. 0 indicates the computer is configured for a full-vat fryer; 1 indicates it is configured for a split-vat (dual-vat) fryer. Press 0 or 1 to toggle back and forth between fulland split-vat. Press. CПtг will be displayed in the left window and either a 0 or a 1 will be displayed in the right window. 0 indicates the computer is configured as non-controlling; 1 indicates it is configured as controlling. Press 0 or 1 to toggle back and forth between non-controlling and controlling. Press. ACYC will be displayed in the left window and either a 0 or 1 will be displayed in the right window. 1 indicates that the operator can bypass the melt cycle. 0 indicates that the operator cannot bypass the melt cycle. Press 0 or 1 to toggle between enabling and disabling the bypass option. (On full vat units, if 1 is displayed, the operator can press the R button to bypass the melt cycle. On dual vat units, if 1 is displayed, the operator can bypass the melt cycle on the left vat by pressing the L button and on the right vat by pressing the R button.) Press. C oп will be displayed in the left window and a number will be displayed in the right window. The number indicates the number of seconds the melt cycle remains on. Use the number keys to enter a new duration. Press. C off will be displayed in the left window and a number will be displayed in the right window. The number indicates the number of seconds the melt cycle remains off. Use the number keys to enter a new duration.
Bulletin ABDE Page 5 of 5 Press. The changes to the configuration will be stored and the computer will be returned to the normal operating mode. Spaghetti Magic III (SMS III) Computer Error Messages SMS III computers manufactured after June 2001 have two additional error messages: FAIL indicates that the computer sensed grounding of the upper water level sensor but not the lower water level sensor. That is, the cookpot filled with water, but the lower water level sensor did not ground. Unless the low water level sensor grounds, the equipment will not heat. To correct this problem, turn the computer off, drain the cookpot, and clean the water level sensors. SEND indicates that the computer sensed resistance (grounding) on Pin 8 of the 15-pin connector. When the computer is programmed at the factory, Pin 8 is temporarily grounded. If the shorting plug is left in place, or if Pin 8 is somehow damaged, this message will appear when the computer is activated. To correct this problem, check for a shorting plug in Pin 8 and remove it if present. If there is no shorting plug, replace the computer.
