Figure 2 If your telephone handset looks like this 5-Position Switch Setting Next, connect the supplied cord from the rear of the StaR Adapter Telephone jack labeled with the telephone symbol to the modular connecting jack on your telephone base where the handset cord normally connects. (FIGURE 3). 3 or 5 (See Section 2.2.3) 1 2 Figure 5 Figure For some electronic telephones, such as Partner or Spirit you must connect an AC/DC power supply as follows: If an optional headset is being used, insert modular end of the headset cord (supplied with the StaR Adapter) into the headset jack on the front of the StaR Adapter. 5 3. OPERATION Sending a Recording The StaR Adapter can be used to download a pre-recorded message to another recording device. This is useful for changing messages on announcement devices at other physical locations. Connecting Your Cassette Player (NOTE: Only battery operated cassette players are recommended). Set the cassette player volume control to its mid position. Insert one end of the audio patch cord in the "EAR" or "MONITOR" jack of the cassette player. Insert the other end into the "TAPE IN" jack located on the front panel of the StaR Adapter (FIGURE 7) When the recording starts, release the "PAUSE" button on the cassette player to allow the tape to start playing. The recording programs can be monitored using the telephone s handset (or headset). Repeat this procedure until all announcements are recorded. Checking the Recording We recommend that you call and monitor the recordings you have just sent. If the volume at the remote location is unsatisfactory, the cassette player volume control may have to be adjusted to provide a more satisfactory level. If the recordings are unsatisfactory, a poor telephone connection may have been established. You may want to try to obtain a clearer connection and re-record the message Figure 7 Cue and Pause the Cassette Player Place the pre-recorded announcement cassette in the cassette player. Advance the tape to the start "CUE" position and depress the "PAUSE" button. Accessing the Remote Device Using your telephone, dial-up the remote access feature of the announcement system. Depress both buttons on the StaR Adapter until the red indicators are visible Receiving a Recording The StaR Adapter can be used to connect a cassette recorder to your telephone to receive pre-recorded announcement messages. Connecting Your Cassette Recorder (NOTE: Only battery operated tape players are remmmended) Set the cassette player volume control to its mid position. Set the StaR Adapter s "HEADSET/VOLUME" control to its mid position Sending the Recording Most announcement devices will require the use of touch tones to perform remote operations such as recording or monitoring. Using the instructions provided with your particular announcement device start the recording function for the proper message (or channel) on the remote announcement device. Figure 8 Insert one end of the audio patch cord in the "MIC" jack of the cassette recorder. Insert the other end into the "TAPE OUT" jack located on the front panel of the StaR Adapter (FIGURE 8). 5 6

The recording progress can be monitored using the telephone s hanset (or headset). Repeat this procedure until all desired announcements are recorded onto the cassette deck. Checking the Recording We recommend that you replay and monitor the recordings on your announcement device afterwards. 9 1 TROUBLESHOOTING Recording is not Sent to Remote Device: Solution: Check All Switch Settings Depress "HANDSET/MODULE ON" button until the red indicator is visible. If a headset is not being used, (See Appendix B for compatible headset models), the 5-position switch must first be set by placing a call to an associate, using the handset (See section 4.2 Placing and Receiving Calls with the StaR Adapter), then playing the tape (See section 3.1 Sending a Recording with the StaR Adapter). If the tape can be heard at the far end, the position is correct; otherwise set the switch to the next position and retry until the tape is clearly heard. NOTE: Any adjustment of the dial may require an opposite level adjustment of the cassette player volume control. Adjusting the Transmit Level: Place a call to an associate and talk while adjusting the transmit level dial with the screwdriver (FIGURE 13). Continue rotating until the optimum sound tone and level are reached. The sound level should be the same as when using the handset. Once set, you do not have to readjust this dial unless you change the telephones. Return the plastic mini-screwdriver to the bracket for future use. If a headset is to be used, remove the handset from its cradle. If a dial tone is not heard in the headset, move the slide switch to each position in turn. When a clear dial tone is heard, go to the next step. If no dial tone is heard in any switch position, move the switch to position "5" and install the optional AC/DC power supply as described in (Section 2.2.3). Note: To converse with the far end between attempts, depress both buttons on the Adapter until the red colors are not visible and talk using the handset. 3 Figure 13 Received Recording Level is Too Loud or Too Soft. Solution: Adjust the Headset Volume Control: Attach patch cord per (FIGURE 8) and adjust headset volume control up or down to obtain the optimum recording level. 2 Remote Recording Level is Too Loud, Too Soft or Distorted. Solution: Adjust the Cassette Player Volume Control. The cassette player volume control is used to optimize the record level for the remote location. Note that the transmit level (recessed dial) controls the line volume level of the headset (if used) as well as the cassette player. It is set at the factory too provide a satisfactory level for both applications (mid range). If you need to adjust the level for the headset operation, follow the next instructions
