HelloSets TM Installation and Operating Instructions Ultralight Single Basic, Item No Ultralight Dual Basic, Item No. 1455
Thank you for buying your headset from Hello Direct. You ve made a wise choice in selecting a HelloSet Basic. This is a high-quality, commercial-grade set, designed for heavy everyday use. No other headset on the market today comes close to matching the HelloSet for design, construction, sound quality and features at such a low price. With both hands free, now you can take notes, check files, even access your computer while you re on the phone - without getting neck and shoulder cramps from scrunching your handset between your ear and shoulder. Your HelloSet Basic is so lightweight you can comfortably wear it all day, every day. You ll sound good to your callers. Because your Basic Series headset is equipped with a noise-cancelling microphone. The mic won t pick up any background noise. It transmits only your voice clearly and naturally. About your new Basic Series HelloSet. Your HelloSet includes a headset to wear, and an amplifier that s compatible with all telephones that use a modular handset jack. If your phone has a 2-prong (PBX) handset jack, our optional Modular-to-PBX Adapter (Item No. 1495) eliminates the need to lift the handset off-hook to use your headset. Care and maintenance of your HelloSet. Periodically clean your HelloSet amplifier and headset by wiping with a soft damp cloth. Do not use alcohol, cleaning solvents or detergents. Keep your headset working and feeling like new by replacing ear cushions and microphone screens regularly. You can order other accessories for your headset, too. Turn to the back of this guide for details. Installing and replacing batteries. You may need batteries to operate your headset (refer to the Quick Setup Guide in the center of this guide), and 2 Duracell AA batteries are included for this purpose. Just slide down the battery door on your amplifier to open the compartment, and install your batteries. Replace the battery door. For maximum comfort and efficiency, we recommend you read all the information provided in this guide before using your new HelloSet. 2
BASIC SERIES HELLOSETS ARE AVAILABLE IN TWO STYLES: The Ultralight Single The Ultralight Single headset rests comfortably over just one ear. That leaves the other ear free to hear what s going on in the office around you. The headband weighs just about an ounce so you ll barely notice it s there. Two pads are included to cushion the end of the band. Wear this headset on either ear. The Ultralight Dual The Dual blocks the commotion of a noisy environment by covering both of your ears. All the wiring to the second speaker is inside the headband, so there s no wire yoke to tangle around your neck. 3
General Headset Tips Headset comfort If you ve never used a headset, wearing one may take getting used to. Like wearing glasses for the first time, it will feel different and perhaps awkward at first. But once you re used to it, you won t want to give it up. Give yourself some time to gradually get used to wearing your new headset. Use it 30 to 60 minutes a day for the first week, an hour or 2 a day for the second week, and 3 to 4 hours a day for the third week. By the end of the fourth week, you ll prefer using the headset for all of your calls. Guaranteed! Sound Quality Sound level in the headset is adjusted from your amplifier. In the past, you made this adjustment by changing the position of your telephone handset in relation to your ear. Now, simply touch the dial on top of the amplifier to adjust volume when necessary. Answering and placing calls Because your HelloSet simply replaces your handset, not the entire phone, you ll continue to place and receive calls using your telephone. Lift the handset off the receiver to begin the call; place it back when you re through. Our Touch-N-Talk, Item No. 1275, eliminates the need for you to lift the handset. Just pull the lever, and the Touch-N-Talk device raises the handset off the receiver, without your having to completely remove it off the cradle. If your phone has a Headset jack or a switch that tells the phone you re using a headset, you won t need to take the handset off the receiver. Simply press a button to start and end your calls, or to answer them. The button that allows you to use the headset will vary from one phone to another, but most often it is the SPEAKERPHE or LINE button. If you re not sure, check your telephone s manual for details. Telephone compatibility Switches on your amplifier let you set up your Basic headset for compatibility with your phone or phone system. Refer to the Quick Setup Guide further in this User Guide for information and instruction. You can reset your headset for a new phone system using the compatibility switches, and you can also use them to make adjustments to improve sound quality. Please call us at for any further assistance. 4
Your Basic Amplifier Handset/Headset Selector. Push back for headset use, and slide forward to select handset operation. 2. Speaking Volume (Bottom). Set the volume of your voice so you can speak normally using the slide switch beneath your amplifier. (Note: If the MIC switch beneath your amplifier is set to compatibility position C, this adjustment is not needed for your phone.) 3. Telephone Compatibility Switches (Bottom). You can set the amplifier to work with any telephone. Refer to the Quick Set-Up Guide in the center of this guide for assistance, or call Listening Volume Control. You can increase or reduce the volume of your caller s voice. Set the control at 0 and increase as needed. 5. Batteries. Two Duracell AA alkaline batteries are included, for the battery power required by telephones with electronic microphone handsets. 6. Telephone Cord. Use this cord to connect to your telephone s handset jack. 7. Handset Jack. Here s where you connect your handset s curly cord. 8. Headset Cord. This cord connects your headset top to the amplifier. It s a full 9 feet long for flexibility and comfort. 5
Wearing an Ultralight Single or Ultralight Dual HelloSet The Ultralight Single and Ultralight Dual headsets are worn with the headband over the head. The Ultralight Single can be worn on either ear. Just swivel the microphone if you need it on the other side. Adjusting the headband The headbands on the Ultralight Single and Ultralight Dual models can be adjusted bigger or smaller to most comfortably fit your head. 1. Using both hands, flex the headband in or out until the Speaker Cushion(s) rest with almost no pressure on your ear(s). 2. Slide the headband up or down until it rests on the top of your head and the Speaker Cushion(s) are centered against your ear(s). Ultralight Single Headpads The Ultralight Single is supplied with a choice of two headpads to prevent the end of the band from poking you. The small, triangular headpad is installed. To install the wide headpad, simply remove the small headpad and press the wide headpad securely onto the end of the headband. 6
Positioning the Microphone Adjusting the Microphone Boom The microphone boom is flexible, so you can position it for comfort and best transmission. The ideal placement for the microphone is usually at the corner of your mouth, not in front of it, and about an inch from your face. Be sure that the side of the microphone with the foam screen is pointed toward your mouth. Attaching the Clothing Clip After adjusting your headset, attach the clothing clip, leaving enough slack for comfortable head movement. Replacing the Foam Mic Screen For hygienic reasons, the microphone screen should be replaced every 2-3 months. To replace the microphone screen, use a pair of tweezers to peel off the old foam screen. Remove the adhesive backing from the new foam screen and install over the microphone element. 7

Troubleshooting The following information covers common problems and suggests solutions. If your HelloSet is not operating properly, follow the suggestions in this section. If your question or problem is not covered here, please contact our Customer Care Team at: Audio Problems Callers can t hear me and I can t hear my callers. 1. Check the installation. Be sure all cords are properly connected. 2. Check the Handset/Headset switch. Push the switch back for headset use, and slide forward to select handset operation. Caller s voice is low or distorted. 1. Adjust the Listening Volume Control on the amplifier. 2. If there are Sensitivity Switches on the bottom of your amplifier, set the first switch to the OFF position. 3. Replace your batteries. For best results, use Duracell alkaline batteries. Callers can t hear me, but I can hear them. 1. Be sure the microphone is properly positioned ideally, about one inch from the corner of your mouth, and level with your chin. 2. Adjust the slide control on your amplifier. The people I m talking to say I sound unclear or too far away. Adjust the position of your microphone. The best place for the microphone is not directly in front of your mouth, but near the corner of it, similar to the way you position the telephone handset. In this position it s able to pick up the sound waves from your speech, but not the air moving from your mouth and nose. My voice echoes or I sound like I m in a tunnel. The slide control under the amplifier is overadjusted. Move it to the left. 10
Troubleshooting Comfort Problems My Ultralight Single or Ultralight Dual headset feels too tight or loose on my ear. Adjust the headband. Using both hands, flex the headband in or out until the speaker cushion(s) rest with almost no pressure on your ear(s). My Ultralight Dual headset sits too high or too low on my ears. Slide the headband up or down. The foam cushions feel too hard. Change the cushions. Foam cushions should be changed every two to three months. If you re still not satisfied with your HelloSet s performance, call our Customer Care Team at for assistance. 11
Headset Accessories Headset Organizer Platform holds your amplifier and phone at an angle for easier access, frees up space beneath for storage.
