10 PC SOLUTIONS What is DVI? Digital Visual Interface (DVI) is a means of transmission for supporting high resolution video signals with excellent EMI/RFI shielding. DVI was developed to enable high-resolution applications to be run on digital flat panel displays. DVI provides a, or a path for the source to communicate directly with the display to set the output to the highest resolution capability of the display. DVI connections are available for digital (DVI-D), analogue (DVI-A) and digital/analogue-integrated (DVI-I applications. DVI is designed for desktop applications and does not require professional installation. Flat panel displays are normally connected to an analogue video source, such as VGA, and while the images are high quality, the double conversion required robs the image of detail. The HDMI protocol combines high definition video, multichannel audio, and inter-component control in a single, digital interface. This cable has the ability to transmit uncompressed digital video from source to display. DisplayPort DisplayPort is an interface technology that is designed to connect high-graphics capable PCs and displays as well as home theater equipment and displays. Like HDMI and DVI, DisplayPort utilises TMDS link technology to send high-bandwidth video and audio signals. DVI The DVI connection was designed as a replacement for the P&D (Plug and Display) standard, itself an upgrade from the digitalonly DFP format. DVI-A The A in DVI-A stands for analogue. DVI-A is seldom encountered in the multimedia realm. Therefore, we do not offer a DVI-A cable. DVI-D Digital video at last! DVI-I does not convert a DVI-D to a DVI-A, or vice versa. It simply enables all 29 pins to conduct so that the cable is dual use. It wouldn t be uncommon for a manufacturer to use a DVI-I connector as the receptacle to allow for the use of both DVI-I and DVI-D cables, even if the analog transmission ability is never used. DVI Single Link Or DVI Dual Link DVI uses a digital information format called Transition Minimised Differential Signaling (TMDS). Single link cables use one TMDS transmitter, while dual link cables use two. A single link DVI connection supports a 1920 x 1080p image at 60fps. In the context of an audio/video theatre system, DVI-D Single Link is 1080p compatible. HDMI uses a DVI-D video transport system, so HDMI is also 1080p compatible. A dual link connection supports up to a 2048 x 1536 image. The digital interface uses 24 of the possible 29 pins found on a DVI-I cable. A single link DVI cable enables 12 of those 24 digital pins and dual link configuration enables all 24. For audio/ video applications, a single link cable is the correct choice.
