section. basic information on mass notification You re a Crucial Part of a Sound Decision Clear direction in the event of an emergency is critical to the safety of building occupants and employees. In today s workplace, distraction is a norm that every employee contends with. You have been asked to play a part of the solution in the planning for an emergency event. There are four critical criteria for a mass notification emergency communication (MNEC) system to be successful: Reach, Clarity, Redundancy and Reporting. n.form delivers on these criteria. Furthermore, you are being asked to install the system completely so that it operates reliably at all times and delivers the messaging in the intent that it was designed. The equipment you are installing will play a vital role in ensuring proper communications in the event of an emergency. You have been provided with state-of-the-art equipment and technology to install, test, tune and finalize. As such, your goals for the completed installation should be: 3 4 Tuning the system to the proper db level Achieving proper sound uniformity Managing expectations for the product Leaving the customer with a properly installed mass notification system Mass notification involves much more than a series of speakers, switches and wiring deployed throughout the office or campus. Congratulations on being asked to perform a vital service for this client. You will leave the workspace a better, safer place to work. WHAT ARE THE CRITERIA FOR PERFORMANCE? The audio from a mass notification system must accomplish two things: It must reach persons in all spaces. It must be intelligible.

section. system components.0-i.lon The Lencore n.form TM System uses an i.lon Server as its head-end equipment to control the networked system. The i.lon Server offers exceptional features, solid construction, plus the flexibility to monitor and control the sound masking from virtually anywhere. Link to Product Page.0-MPI-6 Lencore s Music Page Interface (MPI) replaces all the bulky head end equipment that is associated with music and paging systems. With the MPI there is no need for additional cable home-runs, amplifiers, separate equalizers, special switching equipment or matching vendors for compatible product interfaces. The MPI s technology is so sophisticated that it can allow zone additions, modifications, deletions and other changes to the paging system on the fly, without rewiring. This eliminates the need for running multiple home runs back to the electrical closet or through building risers to create separate or additional zones. Link to Product Page.03-Jordna Hub The Jordna Hub provides the ability to split the system s signal and distribute it to multiple points. It provides an input that connects to the OP (Rack Mount) and has four outputs that enable the hub to branch to other OP (Rack Mount) locations in separate buildings or facilities. When the need for wider system coverage and signal distribution is required, Jordna Hubs can be connected to each other, providing clients with almost infinite scalability to meet future growth. Link to Product Page

. system components.04-smartswitch The Lencore SmartSwitch provides total data and audio redundancy to any n.form system. Link to Product Page.05-OP (Rack Mount) The Operating Platform (Rack Mount) delivers superior intelligible messaging, quadruples the number of speakers from one in-plenum operating platform and has four times the number of channels, compared to the Spectra i.net OP creating coverage up to 6 million square feet per system. Link to Product Page.06-Speakers Emerald Technology speakers are designed to be an integrated part of the Lencore n.form engineered system solution. Each speaker, when used with the OP (Rack Mount), produces nearly twice the sound level of other systems. Link to Product Page.07-Router A router ensures quality data transmission, paging and music integrity across long cable runs. Each router terminates and rebroadcasts signals back to full strength allowing the system wiring network to work at best practices standards. Link to Product Page.08-Free Topology (FT) Terminator The free topology terminator is used to change the topology of the network from a BUS to a free or flexible topology. Link to Product Page

. optional accessories.09-ramp (pre-recorded messages) Designed to address paging and mass communication needs, the RAMP (Record, Audio, MPEG Player) offers the necessary features for a variety of audio announcement applications, ranging from public addresses to safety announcements. Link to Product Page.0-Relay Used for triggering strobes, pre-recorded messages or other devices. Link to Product Page.-Strobes Strobes are visual communication devices that alert occupants of an event. A variety of different colored strobes are available and depending on the type of facility will often represent a different type of emergency. Link to Product Page.-Horns Lencore s decorative paging horns are available when a surface-mounted speaker is desired or necessary due to site configuration or condition. Link to Product Page

. optional accessories.3-mic Pre-Amp Designed to offer superior paging, the Microphone Pre-Amplifier with Automatic Gain Control (AGC) is Lencore s next generation in high performance technology. The Microphone Pre-Amplifier improves vocal clarity for paging and emergency messaging. Each unit incorporates Automatic Gain Control to deliver greater compression and feedback suppression. Link to Product Page.4-Paging Microphone A microphone input device is often used to speed communication through push and talk. This device is easily incorporated into the design of a mass notification system. Link to Product Page.5-Amplifiers for Horns When using a horn for loud voice communication an amplifier is required in order to generate enough power to make the message clear and intelligible. 15 section 3 3. step-by-step op (rack mount) installation instructions PREPARATION Review boxes. Refer to packing list and check equipment in boxes. Be certain you have: a All OP (Rack Mounts) Please secure all OP (Rack Mounts) to a very safe place. b c d e i.lon (make sure you secure the i.lon approximate cost $000.00). The terminator(s). Keep these in a safe place. MPI (headend enclosure). Speaker boxes. Count all the items to ensure that you have all of your equipment. Open speaker boxes to properly count the number of speakers you have. 3 Review Wiring and Installation Drawings: a b c Verify where wiring will be installed BEFORE placing equipment. Check wiring runs to properly estimate needed quantity of wire for the project. Check quantity for: Data Wire (CAT 5e, 4 pair), Audio Wire (CAT 5e, 4 pair), Speaker Wire (CAT 5e, 4 pair). Check that all wiring is Plenum Rated, Only use Plenum Rated wiring in Plenums. Verify where OP (Rack Mount) and speakers will be installed. Please note OPs need to be installed in sequence. Review location for placing the head end equipment (electrical or IT closet) make sure that you have access to power in the closet. Follow all safety precautions. Use a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) for powering the head end for all emergency paging or MNEC systems. Check for and identify intended placement for the: a Wall mounted enclosure or rack mounted drawer 4 Identify any major site impediments such as: a b c d Slab-to-slab wall Shafts Risers (wiring raceways from floor to floor) Obstructions in plenum REMINDER Secure all OP (Rack Mount), MPI and i.lon equipment onsite. Store securely & safely. All are expensive items!

3. op (rack mount) and speaker placement Place the speakers by walking the floor and set the speakers on the floor at approximate installation locations. NEVER PLUG AN OP (RACK MOUNT) INTO ANY COMPUTER OR NETWORK EQUIPMENT OTHER THAN AN i.lon OR ANOTHER OP (RACK MOUNT). INSTALLATION IMPORTANT: Lencore suggests installing equipment in this sequence: 3 Hang speakers* Install Rack Mount Run wire with power OFF ATTENTION: DO NOT HOOK UP POWER UNTIL THE SYSTEM IS FULLY INSTALLED. * Speaker units will hang from the ceiling using the attached chain (supplied by Lencore). Chain length should be cut to enable each speaker to hang a minimum of 6 above the ceiling tile and a maximum of above the ceiling tile, unless otherwise noted on the drawing. NOTE: TO HELP MAINTAIN UNIFORMITY, KEEP THE CHAIN LENGTHS/ HEIGHTS CONSISTENT THROUGHOUT THE INSTALLATION AND SPACE. HELPFUL HINT It may be helpful to mark each speaker with a magic marker on the bottom for each OP (Rack Mount), each channel and speaker number, for example: OP (Rack Mount) #, channel - mark the speaker EOP-. Also when you get to the end speaker on each channel, add END to this designation.

3.3 hang speakers 3 4 Climb ladder and access the ceiling plenum Hang speaker units in plenum area at marked locations using preferred hanging method (powder action gun such as a Hilti-gun or drill and screw; check your local building codes for allowable hanging methods and standards) Drive a nail holding the clip with the speaker chain and speaker into ceiling Pull and connect audio cables to speakers by channel (refer to Section C Wiring) See Video:

3.4 install op (rack mount) You have received OP (Rack Mounts) All are shipped with the number A/B and will be sequenced in the field. Check and install each respective OP (Rack Mount) according to the drawing. OP (Rack Mounts) are installed in a standard 9" rack. IMPORTANT: leave RU space above each OP for ventilation and wire management In the event of trouble, please contact: Name: Address: Phone Number:

3.5 wiring the speakers and op (rack mounts) 3 4 Power cables Data cables (CAT 5e or equivalent 4 pair Plenum Rated) Straight Pin 568B Method Audio cables (CAT 5e or equivalent 4 pair Plenum Rated) Straight Pin 568B Method Speaker Cables (CAT 5e or equivalent 4 pair Plenum Rated) Straight Pin 568B Method PREPARATION A B Check site drawing for wiring installation diagram Use wiring diagram to determine approximate wiring lengths: a b Approximately 5 between speakers (Cat 5e 4 pair) Approximately 3000 total Data and Audio cable length (AE Router needed at that point to extend distance) IMPORTANT: Double-check for long home runs and runs between floors, as these will require much longer lengths of wire. Check wiring schematics for your project. C For more detail about system wiring, see Section 3.7 data and audio cables GROUND WIRES Ground wires are 6-gauge A common ground must exist a b Between OP (Rack Mount) to OP (Rack Mount) Between floors Plug OP (Rack Mount) into a standard 5 VAC outlet. Complete all other wiring (audio and data) and perform wiring checklist (see page 8) BEFORE powering up the system. WARNING NOTE: Make sure that grounds are connected to grounds and that wires are not crossed anywhere in the entire system.

3.6 data and audio cables Data cables are 4-pair CAT 5e or equivalent Must be plenum-rated Straight-pin cable (Pin ->, Pin ->, Pin 3->3, Pin 4->4, Pin 5->5, Pin 6->6, Pin 7->7, Pin 8->8) NOTE Do NOT run data cable alongside power wires. Data cables must cross at right angles to power wires found in the plenum. Follow all proper procedures & local codes. WIRING BETWEEN POWER ZONES: Run data and audio cable from the MPI in the closet to the first OP (Rack Mount) and continue with the data and audio wires from each OP (Rack Mount) in sequence. It is recommended to use two different colored cables as to not confuse them in the plenum. Before use check and test all cables. Use a cable continuity tester. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP! This easy step will resolve most of any problems associated with the installation and will save you significant time if you need to trouble-shoot the system. Even pre-packaged/pre-certified batch tested cables fail. Connect the data and audio cables into the first OP (Rack Mount) Data IN and Audio IN jacks respectively. (Female RJ45). Connect another data and audio cable from the first OP (Rack Mount's) Data and Audio OUT jack to the Data and Audio IN jack of the second OP (Rack Mount). Continue connection from OP (Rack Mount) to OP (Rack Mount) in numbered sequence. You may NOT skip a sequenced OP (Rack Mount) (i.e., connect OP (Rack Mount) to 4). Keep OP (Rack Mounts) sequenced, even if you swap OP (Rack Mounts) on a wired route. (If you swap an OP (Rack Mount), please designate the swap with notes on drawing so that the as-built drawings may be properly referenced.) TIA/EIA 568-B CONFIGURATION NOTE Do NOT run data cable alongside power wires. Audio cables must run at right angles to power wires found in the plenum. Follow all proper procedures & local codes.

3.6 data and audio cables At the last OP (Rack Mount): a b c Run the last data cable to the IN jack of the last OP (Rack Mount) in the project. In the last OP (Rack Mount) run a cable from the data OUT to the head end equipment in the data closet. This will connect to the data IN from the last OP (Rack Mount) on the SmartSwitch. If a SmartSwitch is not used, connect the data terminator to the data out of the last OP In the last OP (Rack Mount) click the Audio Terminator into the Audio OUT jack. This should only be installed in the last OP (Rack Mount).

3.6 data and audio cables CAT 5 SPEAKER CABLES ARE 4-PAIR CAT 5e OR EQUIVALENT Must be plenum-rated Straight-pin cable Speaker connectors: RJ45 MAKE SURE YOUR CONNECTOR CAN ACCEPT 8 WIRES (4 PAIR) IMPORTANT WIRING INFORMATION Each OP (Rack Mount) has 6 channels Each channel supports -8 speakers, for a total of up to 8 speakers per OP (Rack Mount) Wiring by channel, as specified by Lencore, permits proper system zoning and tuning Run CAT 5 Speaker cable with RJ45 (4 PAIR) connectors from each channel on the OP (Rack Mount) to the speakers listed on the drawings. MAKE SURE THAT YOUR AUDIO RUNS MATCH THE DRAWINGS FOR THREE VERY IMPORTANT REASONS: First, the speakers and channels have been specially laid out to accomplish the right sound in the environment you are installing the sound masking. For example, you will most likely notice that the speakers on a channel stay in like space, i.e., a channel will have all of its speakers in either an open-plan space, a closed-plan space, an individual conference room, etc. Second, to properly tune the space after installation, the channels per the drawings need to be clearly referenced to understand where the speakers are when tuning from the electrical closet using the central control server (the i.lon). Third, this method ensures that proper groups can be arranged on the i.lon controller. REMINDER Follow channel designations on drawings (,, 3, 8) so that proper tuning of the system can take place. Any changes to the system MUST be designated on the drawing

3.7 wiring information Connect the CAT 5 Speaker cable to the IN jack designated at the bottom of the speaker can. TEST CABLES BEFORE INSTALLING USE APPROPRIATE CABLE TESTERS 3 4 Run CAT 5 Speaker cable from the OUT jack of the same speaker can to the next corresponding IN jack of the next speaker for that channel. Continue this sequence until all of the speakers in the channel run are completely wired. There will be nothing connected to the last speaker on the OUT port and the end of each designated channel. NOTE Keep channels EXACTLY as marked on drawing. ALL CAT 5 cables MUST be tested, even if the cables are pre-packaged and labeled as tested! We cannot stress this enough as pre-certified cables are often batch tested and there may be cables that have not been tested and can fail!

3.8 head end equipment installation HEAD END EQUIPMENT LIST: i.lon Music Paging Interface (MPI-6) SmartSwitch Jordna Hub FT Terminator Mic Pre-Amp (Optional Equipment) Electrical Requirements: a One dedicated 0v/0 Amp circuit is suggested for the Lencore branded enclosure Installing Head End Equipment (Din Rail and i.lon) (This may already be pre-wired) WARNING NOTE: Never use a ground lifter. Always use a proper three prong adapter for safety.

3.9 system connections 3 4 Connect the Data CAT5 RJ45 cable that is going to the first OP (Rack Mount) to the connection marked TO OP on the MPI. Connect the Audio CAT5 RJ45 cable that is going to the first OP (Rack Mount) to the connection marked AUDIO OUT on the MPI. You must also connect a ground wire from the MPI to the first OP (Rack Mount) Doing this connects the MPI ground to the OP (Rack Mount) ground. All wiring from the MPI must go to the SAME OP and must remain consistent. See the MPI label to verify which audio or paging input you may need and to connect appropriate music source or phone page into the MPI.

3.0 final wiring checklist FINAL WIRING CHECKLIST BEFORE POWERING UP SYSTEM Have you checked all home runs? Have you checked all wiring between floors (risers)? Are you sure all grounds are properly tied between OP (Rack Mounts)? Have you made sure all Data and Audio and Speaker wires are tested and installed? Check polarity of all wiring throughout. TIP TIP! Check data wires by going to the Sound Manager Configurator and refreshing OP (Rack Mount) after each OP (Rack Mount) is connected. This will help to eliminate large trouble shooting issues at the end of the job.
