3 1.1. Overview The AMS-R4000 is a modular Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) based on the high performance Cortex-A8 1GHz ARM CPU with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of Flash. The device has an internal 3G/4G cellular modem, two 10/100 base-t Ethernet port, four serial communication ports and a wide range of hot swappable digital/analog input and output modules. Moreover, the AMS-R4000 RTU supports the EMC industry standard (IEC ), a -40 to 75 C operating temperature range, multiple communication protocols (Modbus, DNP3, IEC , OPC UA) and an IEC61131 based programming environment (PBS- SoftLogic). PBS-SoftLogic is an IDE for developing function block based programs, simulate and downloading to the RTU. You can use the C/C++ or Lua scripting language for developing new function blocks by yourself. 10 2.1. System Architecture The AMS-R4000 consists of a CPU module which is operates as the brain of the system. The CPU module manages the I/O module operation, collects their information and reports the processed information to the master of the SCADA system. The secure and reliable CAN protocol is used to communicate the CPU and I/O modules. This communication occurs through an expansion connector. CAN communication addresses for each I/O module are arranged dynamically by the CPU module. All communication failure of the I/O module during initialization and operation is detected by the CPU module and can be reported to the master of the SCADA system. 10 AMS-R4000 Modular RTU
11 2.2. Installing Modules on a DIN-Rail CPU Module In order to installing the CPU module on a DIN-Rail, simply perform the following steps: Insert the top of the DIN-Rail bracket into the top of the DIN-Rail. Rotate the top of the module downwards until the bracket snaps into the DIN-Rail. 11 AMS-R4000 Modular RTU
12 Move the module along the DIN-Rail until it is placed in the left side of the rail. I/O Modules In order to installing the I/O module on a DIN-Rail besides the other modules, simply perform the following steps: Insert the top of the DIN-Rail bracket into the top of the DIN-Rail. 12 AMS-R4000 Modular RTU
13 Rotate the top of the module downwards until the bracket snap into the DIN-Rail. Move the module along the DIN-Rail until it is placed next to the other module. 13 AMS-R4000 Modular RTU
14 If it is the first I/O module, use the AMS-R4001 expansion connector in order to communicate between the CPU and I/O module. 14 AMS-R4000 Modular RTU
15 If it is not the first I/O module, use AMS-R4002 expansion connector in order to communicate between I/O modules. After performing these steps, installation is completed. 15 AMS-R4000 Modular RTU
16 2.3. Removing Modules from a DIN-Rail In order to removing the CPU and I/O module from a DIN-Rail, simply perform the following steps: Remove the expansion connector between modules. Use a screwdriver in order to push down the spring-loaded part of the bracket. 16 AMS-R4000 Modular RTU
17 Rotate the bottom of the module upwards and then remove it from the DIN-Rail Connecting the Module Power The AMS-R4000 CPU module accepts power in the range of 9-36V DC. It should be noted that the I/O modules do not need the separate input power and the required power of these modules is provided by the CPU modules through the expansion connector. The required power of the system depends on the number of the I/O module and can be calculated as follow: Module CPU Module I/O Module Maximum Power Consumption 5 Watts 2 Watts It should be noted that the number of modules should be selected in such a way that the maximum input power of the system does not exceed than 100 Watts Connecting to the Network 17 AMS-R4000 Modular RTU
18 The AMS-R4000 CPU module supports two standard 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports. Each port use a unique MAC address and supports Auto MDI/MDI-X mode, in which case the port s pinouts are adjusted automatically depending on the type of Ethernet cable used (straight-through or cross-over). The default configuration of the LAN2 Ethernet port is set as DHCP and the default configuration of the LAN1 LAN Port Default IP address Default Netmask Default Gateway LAN Programming Environment Ethernet port is set as static IP address as below: The PBS-SoftLogic programming environment is used to program the RTU which can be downloaded from After downloading the software, extract Zip file in a desired drive. Please note that the software folder path cannot be very long. Moreover, the software needs the Dot Net Frame Work for the proper operation. Open the software folder and run VSFBEditor.exe programming environment. Now, you can simply implement all your idea into your SCADA system. User manual of the software can be found in the doc folder of the software path Factory Defaults If the device network configuration was forgotten or the device booting failed due to the wrong user programming, simply perform the following steps in order to reset the device to the factory defaults: Disconnect the power supply of the device. Connect COM1 and COM2 RS232 serial ports of the RTU to each other by wire jumping TX1 to RX1 and RX2 to TX2. Connect the power supply. After finishing the booting process which takes about 30 second, the network configuration is reset to default network configuration and the last wrong user program is cleared. Disconnect the power supply of the device and then remove the wire jumping of the serial ports. Connect the power supply and use the device with the default network configuration. 18 AMS-R4000 Modular RTU
19 3.1. Digital Input Modules Overview The AMS-R4000 RTU provides two types of the digital input modules. The AMS-R4116 supports 16 channels of isolated digital inputs and the AMS-R4132 supports 32 channels of isolated digital inputs. To simplify field wiring, four inputs of these modules are building a group with a common return. The modules scan and process the inputs with the high time resolution of 5 ms. The measured value can be filtered by the CPU module with a software selectable filters such as the digital filter or chattering filter. The inputs of these modules are isolated by optocoupler and they are protected against transient voltages. Moreover, the modules is able to properly monitor the reverse polarity of the voltage input. The AMS-R4116 is equipped by four counter channel (Channel 1-4). The maximum permissible frequency for counter pulses is 120 Hz. The modules have 16 and 32 LEDs to indicate the signal state at the inputs. The required power of these modules are supplied by the expansion connector from the AMS-R4000 CPU module. 21 3.2. Digital Output Modules Overview The AMS-R4000 RTU provides two types of the transistor digital output modules. The AMS-R4216 supports 16 channels of transistor digital outputs and the AMS-R4232 supports 32 channels of transistor digital outputs. Using transistor instead of mechanical relay in these modules provide a fast performance and longer lifetime. The modules can be used to control relays, solenoid valves, panel lamps and other on/off devices which require DC voltage. Any failure of the modules is detected rapidly and the digital outputs are set to the safe values which can be specified by the software. The modules have 16 and 32 LEDs to indicate the signal state at the outputs. The required power of these modules are supplied by the expansion connector from the AMS-R4000 CPU module. Moreover, the modules require a 12 to 48 VDC power supply for the transistor biasing. 23 3.3. Analog Input Modules Overview The AMS-R4000 RTU provides two types of the analog input modules. The AMS-R4312 supports 12 channels of analog inputs and the AMS-R4324 supports 24 channels of analog inputs. The modules can be used to monitor level, flow, pressure, temperature and other analog transmitters. The modules is able to monitor and process wide range of the voltage signal in the range of 0 to 5 V, 0 to 10 V, -5 to +5 V and the current signal in the range of 0 to 20 ma, 4 to 20 ma. The measured differential values are converted in steps (16 bit resolution). The sampling rate of the module can be software selectable up to the 30 HZ. The modules have 12 and 24 LEDs to indicate the signal state at the inputs. The required power of these modules are supplied by the expansion connector from the AMS-R4000 CPU module. 25 3.4. Analog Output Modules Overview The AMS-R4000 RTU provides two types of the analog output modules. The AMS-R4404 supports 4 channels of analog outputs and the AMS-R4408 supports 8 channels of analog outputs. The modules can control valve actuators, motor speed controllers, temperature controllers or any device requiring an analog control signal. The modules is able to generate wide range of the voltage signal in the range of 0 to 5 V, 0 to 10 V, -5 to +5 V, -10 to +10 V and the current signal in the range of 0 to 20 ma, 4 to 20 ma by using the microprocessor-controlled D/A converter. Conversion range and slew rate of the modules can be specified by the software. The conversion resolution of the converter is 16 bits. Any failure of the modules is detected rapidly and the analog outputs are set to the safe values which can be specified by the software. The modules have 4 and 8 LEDs to indicate the signal state at the outputs. The required power of these modules are supplied by the expansion connector from the AMS-R4000 CPU module. 27 3.5. Power Analyzer Modules Overview AMS-R4701 PWA is a 3 phase modular power analyzer for measuring and recording electrical parameters such as voltage, current, power factor, active, reactive and apparent powers, active and reactive energies in the electrical transmission and distribution lines. The measured data can be used to analyze the quality of the network, make corrections in the network, selecting compensators, reduce the losses and consumption management. The device is able to transfer the measuring parameters to a Modbus master device through the RS-485 serial port and the AMS bus. By using this feature, AMS-R4701 PWA can be communicate with 2 masters simultaneously. One of the masters is AMS-R4000 RTU CPU module and another can be standard Modbus RTU master devices with the RS485 communication. Menu and Panel Description: AMS-R4701 is able to show all the measuring parameters on the display panel. Moreover, users can change device configuration with setting pages. At the main menu, there are 13 pages. Pages 1 to 10 show the measured values, page 11 for the date and time, page 12 for device setting parameters and last page for communication status monitoring. 32 Main Menu Page 11: Date and Time In this page, time, date and calendar are shown. Press Enter to change time zone or calendar type. Main Menu Page 12: Setting In this page, default setting of the device can be changed by the user. By pressing enter button, user should type password to open setting menu. If user type a wrong password for 3 times, device will be locked for 10 min. After this time period, if user do it again, the device will be locked and need a factory code to unlock. 32 AMS-R4000 Modular RTU Main Menu Page 13: Communication Status This page monitor send and receive data packet through the AMS-Bus or the Modbus communication. Port1 show the communication status through the Modbus RTU over serial RS485 and Port2 show the communication status through AMS Bus with AMS- R4000 RTU. If the request and respond packet exceed than 9999 packets, the counter will be reset.
