4 Connection and Operation
4-2 Connection and Operation Instrument Connection to a Gauge Tube CAUTION: When disconnecting the ATV from a gauge tube, pull the interface module straight away from the tube until the two items are completely separated. Failure to do this can result in the breaking of the center post or key guide of the gauge tube. Connect the interface module of the ATV to the connector base of either a DV-4 or DV-6 gauge tube. Do not install any extension or adapter cables between the module and the gauge tube.
Connection and Operation 4-3 Basic Instrument Operation and Pressure Measurement There are only two basic modes of operation, Auto-Off (about 40 seconds of active display) and Continuous On (display is always active). Instrument operation is initiated by momentarily pressing the mode button. Upon doing this the instrument is now powered on and defaults to the Auto-Off mode. To change the mode of operation to a continuous mode press and hold the mode button until the up arrow symbol appears in the display. At this point release the button. Select the mode of operation by momentarily pressing the mode button. When doing this the display will switch from displaying the up arrow and the down arrow each time the button is pressed. By leaving the down arrow symbol on the display, the instrument will remain in the Auto-Off mode. Leaving the up arrow will place the instrument in the Continuous On mode. Pressure Measurements using the DV-4 Gauge Tube Connect the ATV s interface module to the DV-4 gauge tube. Momentarily press the mode button and verify that d--4 and Torr or mbar are displayed and are correct for the instruments intended use. If the displayed values are incorrect, refer back to Section 3. Press and release the mode button of the instrument, d--4 will appear on the display momentarily. The pressure reading will now be displayed for about 40 seconds if the instrument is in the auto-off mode (down arrow symbol). 23 5 Maintenance and Trouble shooting
5-2 Maintenance and Troubleshooting Instrument Maintenance The only authorized maintenance at the user level for the ATV 4/6 is the replacement of the 9V battery. Consult the troubleshooting guide for additional information. Reference Tube Calibration The low end of the vacuum range can be set with a Hastings reference tube, such as the DB-16D, which is used with the d 4 range, or the DB-20 which is used with the d 6 range. The DB-16D must have a marked calibration value between 0.10 Torr and 0.20 Torr. The DB-20 must have a marked calibration value between Torr and Torr. Connect the ATV coupler to the Reference Tube. Press and hold down the MODE switch until the unit of measure appears in the upper right hand corner of the display. Release the mode switch. If the unit is mbar, press and release the MODE switch to get Torr. In about 5 seconds the display will indicate the tube type, either d-4 or d-6. If the Reference Tube is a DB-16D the tube type should be d 4, if the Reference Tube is a DB-20, the tube type should be d 6. If it is correct, do nothing. If you wish to change it, press and release the MODE switch. In about 5 seconds the display will indicate CAL.H. Do not press the MODE switch again until the display indicates CAL.L. CAUTION: Pressing the MODE switch while in the CAL.H mode will cause the ATV to accept the Reference Tube output as the high calibration value rather than the low calibration value. In about 5 seconds, the display will indicate CAL.L. Press and release the MODE switch. The display will indicate 0.10 Torr if d 4 was selected or Torr if d 6 was selected. Press and hold down the MODE switch until the indicated pressure matches that marked on the Reference Tube. NOTE: Some DB-16D Reference Tubes may be marked in mmhg and some DB-20 Reference Tubes may be marked in microns Hg. To convert: 1 mmh = 1 Torr 1 micron Hg = Torr This completes the Reference Tube calibration. In about 25 seconds the ATV will turn off. Note: Making changes while in the calibration mode, other than selecting unit of measure, may result in the lose of user calibration values. Troubleshooting Guide Symptom: Display reads Err instead of the system pressure. Cause: Gauge tube disconnected, or defective gauge tube Action: Check connection between the instruments interface module and the tube. If problem still persists connect instrument to a new gauge tube. If unit is still not functioning properly, consult factory. Symptom: Display reads batt. Cause: Battery voltage is too low. Action: Replace the 9V battery.
Connection and Operation 5-3 Symptom: Abnormal pressure readings. Cause: Incorrect gauge tube type connected to instrument. Action: Verify that the tube is of the correct type that the instrument is setup and calibrated for. If the problem still persists, consult the factory. Symptom: Blank display, mode switch is inoperative. Cause: Battery voltage is too low. Action: Replace the 9 V battery. If problem still persists, consult factory.
