3 Important Information WARNING The backlight setting for the SMART Sympodium L-150 lectern is 70% of maximum. This configuration compensates for degradation and extends the longevity of the backlight and other heat-sensitive components. This setting is particularly important if you're operating the L-150 in an environment where operating temperatures reach or exceed 95 F (35 C). Accordingly, if you are operating the L-150 in such an environment, any alteration of the backlight to a setting beyond 70% will void your SMART Limited Equipment Warranty (see paragraph (iii) of Warranty Exclusions in the warranty). WARNING As the lectern screen is extremely sensitive to liquids, don't apply glass cleaner or any organic solvent such as alcohol or even mild detergent. Use of these cleaners can damage the screen's finish or seep into the electronics, voiding your warranty coverage. See page 28 of this guide for more detailed cleaning information. Do not immerse the stylus in liquids. WARNING If the lectern screen has been damaged, DO NOT touch any liquid that may be leaking from it. This liquid is an irritant. In case of contact with skin, eyes or mouth, rinse immediately with running water for at least 15 minutes. Consult a physician if contact is made with the eyes or mouth. WARNING Do not use the SMART Sympodium L-150 lectern in a facility control system that requires extremely high reliability; the lectern may cause other electronic devices to malfunction, or other devices may cause the console to malfunction. Where use is prohibited, power off the console to prevent the possibility of it causing other electronic devices to malfunction. SMART Technologies Inc. does not accept any liability for direct or consequential damages. For details, refer to the warranty shipped with the lectern. SMART Sympodium L-150 User's Guide i

4 Other Precautions For operating safety and proper installation, read this guide carefully and observe the following precautions: 1 The digitizer inside the screen won't work if placed in the vicinity of a large magnetic field. For this reason, keep speakers and power transformers away from the lectern. 2 Do not place sharp or heavy objects on the screen because they may scratch its surface or block ventilation holes. Do not use any instrument other than the tethered stylus on the screen as the screen's coating may be damaged. 3 The SMART X-Port 30 unit can support only one control panel at a time. Connecting two panels will cause the system to malfunction. 4 Avoid setting up and using the lectern in an area with excessive levels of dust, humidity and cigarette smoke. Do not set up the lectern where it is exposed to direct sunlight, severe temperature changes, heat from other appliances, water or any other liquid. 5 Do not modify the power cord. Handle the power cord carefully and avoid excessive bending. You should route the power cord so it is unlikely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon or against it. If you must run the cable over the floor, lay the cable in a flat, straight line and secure it to the floor with tape or a cable-management strip in a contrasting color. 6 Do not connect or disconnect the video or power cable while the console is on, as it may damage the liquid crystal display (LCD) or the computer video card. 7 The lectern is equipped with a three-wire grounding-type plug. This plug will only fit into a grounding-type power outlet. If you are unable to insert the plug into the outlet, contact your electrician to replace the outlet. Do not try to circumvent the plug's safety restrictions. 8 The lectern's location should give you clear and direct access to the main power plug so you can unplug the unit at any time. Always disconnect the unit before performing any installation or maintenance. 9 Disconnect the power to the lectern during electrical storms or if it won't be used over a long period of time. 10 Do not exceed a display refresh rate of 75 Hz for input sources as this can cause the screen to overheat. 11 If replacement parts are required, the service technician must use replacement parts specified by SMART Technologies Inc. or parts with the same characteristics as the originals that have been approved by SMART Technologies Inc. 12 Use the lectern with a VGA or DVI graphics card. An inappropriate graphics card may damage the screen. 13 Avoid subjecting the lectern to intensive shock or vibration. You may damage the lectern by hitting or dropping any component. 14 The stylus is a sealed unit. There aren't any user-repairable parts inside the stylus, nor are there any batteries. If you attempt to open the stylus, you may break the seal and render the stylus unusable. 15 With use, the stylus wears down. Do not use a stylus that has worn down to a sharp or angular tip as it may damage the screen. See page 28 for information on changing the stylus tip. 16 Prevent children from playing with the stylus, as the small tip may be accidentally removed, creating a choking hazard. ii SMART Sympodium L-150 User's Guide

17 SMART X-Port 30 Unit Rack-mounted inside the lectern, the SMART X-Port 30 unit controls the switching between various signals, including RGB video, RS-232 serial and audio. Users can easily switch between as many as three connected input devices by using the control panel, which is located on the console. X-Port 30 Unit Your integrator can connect up to three RGB input sources to the X-Port 30 unit, two video output sources and an external audio system. Images displayed on the screen originate from one input source, and can be transmitted to any connected output device. A simple button press on the control panel controls the input source, simultaneously switching video, serial and audio signals sent to the screen. These input sources can include an: internal computer external computer, such as a guest laptop computer auxiliary input device in the equipment drawer, such as a document camera, VCR or DVD player NOTE: If your video source doesn't have an RGB output signal, you'll need to integrate a video scaler to convert the signal. In most cases, the first device option on the control panel is a permanently installed computer, followed by your laptop computer and the auxiliary video device in the equipment drawer. However, if your integration differs from this guideline, the icons on the control panel may not match your devices. Through the X-Port 30 unit, the lectern can send video output to an external projector or another external monitor, while also sending the audio output to a room sound system. SMART Sympodium L-150 User's Guide 9

18 Power Distribution Power cable extensions are connected to the power bar, which is located behind the rackmount cabinet, near the audience side of the lectern. Those cables are routed through the cable channels so the interior of the cabinet remains neat. You'll notice three available outlets on the power bar. Use these with the IEC/country-specific adapters (in miscellaneous accessory kit) to connect other peripheral equipment. Occupying the other power bar outlets are power cables from: the external computer (laptop) AC (MAINS) cable the computer extension cable the auxiliary video source AC (MAINS) cable the console, which has an 18V DC power supply the X-Port 30 unit, which has a 12V DC power supply Audience Side Power Bar Lectern Connection Panel Housing The Audio System Through the X-Port 30 unit, the lectern can accept balanced or unbalanced audio signals from your connected input devices. However, the lectern only provides audio cables to the internal and external computers, not to the equipment drawer. In turn, the X-Port 30 unit sends out balanced signals to the lectern connection panel. You can also connect an audio system that requires an unbalanced source directly to the X-Port 30 unit. 10 SMART Sympodium L-150 User's Guide

Writing and Erasing over Computer Applications The lectern console, powered by SMART Board software on a connected computer, gives you the ability to annotate over computer applications. The behavior of these applications differs, depending on whether the program is board-aware. A program that is board-aware recognizes writing on the screen as a program component, a non-aware application does not. For a complete list of board-aware applications, go to the Aware tab of the SMART Board Control Panel. You can also find a listing of board-aware applications and versions in the Release Notes (Readme.txt), which is in the SMART Board software folder. This section gives you the basic instructions for using the console buttons and stylus. However, read the SMART Board User's Guide for comprehensive, detailed information on what you can accomplish with the many available annotation tools. 18 SMART Sympodium L-150 User's Guide

27 To get the most from the console, you should have both the SMART Board driver and SMART Notebook software running on the computer that connects to the lectern. As its name implies, the driver is the program that drives the screen, converting stylus contact into computer instruction. SMART Notebook software acts as a receptacle for anything you write on the screen: it opens in the background when you save an annotation. We recommend that you add these programs to your Startup group. Otherwise, you'll have to activate the programs with an attached keyboard or mouse before you can use the screen. To open the SMART Board driver and SMART Notebook software: 1 Open the SMART Board software folder and select SMART Board Tools. NOTE: You'll have to use the mouse or keyboard. The stylus doesn t work until you open the SMART Board software. SMART Board software opens, and the SMART Board icon appears on your screen. Once the board driver is running, you can use the stylus. 2 Press the SMART Board icon with the stylus. A list of available tools appears. 3 Select Notebook. SMART Notebook software opens. To create annotations in a board-aware application: NOTE: With a board-aware application, you can save the annotations either as part of the open file or as a Notebook file. For a list of board-aware applications, see the SMART Board software Release Notes file (Readme.txt). 1 Open your board-aware application. 2 With your finger, press one of the four Colored Ink buttons. 3 Use the stylus to write on the screen just as you would write on paper. As you do so, a stream of electronic ink follows your stylus tip. 4 To save the annotation as part of the file, save the file as you normally would. or To save the annotation and application background as a Notebook file, capture the annotation using the screen capture tools. For Windows computers, open Notebook software, select View > Launch Screen Capture. A three-button toolbar will appear. Select either the Area, Window or Screen button to capture an image of the annotation and the background. For Macintosh computers, you can access the screen capture tools from the SMART Board icon. As you do so, a stream of electronic ink follows your stylus tip. At the same time, a threebutton toolbar appears. 4 To save your annotation and background, press the camera icon. Notebook software captures both the annotation and an image of the background application into a Notebook file. If you're using the Windows version of Notebook software, they are saved as two objects. With the Mac OS version, they are saved as one object. To capture a selected area, press the middle icon. Drag to outline an area that you want and lift the stylus. Notebook software captures an image of that area and the application background. To send the annotation and the background to the default printer, press the printer icon. 32 Orienting the Screen To ensure accurate response to stylus touch, the computer needs to know the exact location of the computer image on the interactive screen. You provide this information when you perform an orientation procedure a very simple process of touching the stylus precisely on a grid of crosses. With correct orientation, the cursor appears directly beneath the stylus when you touch the screen. You'll have to orient each computer source separately. To orient the interactive screen: 1 Click the SMART Board icon. 2 Select Orient. 3 Follow the on-screen instructions. NOTE: For more details, see the SMART Board User's Guide. Select the orientation level that suits your needs. Press the center of the cross Orientation Tips Touch the stylus tip in the center of each red cross and then lift the stylus. If you neglect to touch and remove the stylus from the center of the cross, the screen will not track the stylus contact correctly. If you re dissatisfied with the precision of a particular orientation point, redo the last point by pressing either the Left-Click or Right-Click buttons or the left-arrow key on the attached keyboard. You won t lose any previously established orientation points. To redo the entire orientation procedure, press the Esc key on the keyboard. 24 SMART Sympodium L-150 User's Guide

36 Care and Cleaning Periodically dust the lectern using a soft, dry cloth. If necessary, slightly moisten the cloth with water. IMPORTANT: Don't use glass cleaner, paint thinner, benzene, alcohol or any other solvent to clean the screen. The stylus is a sealed unit that contains electronics but no batteries. Attempting to open the stylus will damage the electronics, making the stylus unusable. To clean the stylus, use a soft cloth with mild detergent, such as dishwashing liquid, diluted with water. Coffee IMPORTANT: Don't immerse the stylus in liquid. Cleaning the Screen Surface We recommend that you clean a heavily used screen once a week to maintain optimal clarity. IMPORTANT: Do not use any organic solvent, such as alcohol, glass cleaner, or even mild detergent to clean the screen. These cleaners can damage the screen's finish. Use a soft, dry cloth. If necessary, slightly moisten the cloth with water. Apply only light pressure and do not make the surface wet. Changing Stylus Tips During regular usage, the stylus tip slowly wears down. Replace the tip when you notice it becoming short or angular. An angular tip may damage the screen. The lectern comes with five extra stylus tips and an o-ring tool to assist in tip replacement. If you require more replacement tips, contact your dealer. To replace the stylus tip: 1 Use the o-ring tool to grab the stylus tip and slide it straight out of the stylus. O-Ring Tool Stylus Tip 2 Insert a new tip straight into the barrel of the stylus. Push the tip firmly until it stops. 28 SMART Sympodium L-150 User's Guide
