7 A. Introduction The Telecor Controlled Discussion System (CDS) is a modular conference system that is ideal for portable and permanent conferences. It consists of a Unit Controller that can support and manage up to 120 Floor Units, which are available in Delegate or Chairman models. The level of control is set by the operator, thereby allowing the CDS to easily adapt to various conference proceedings in either formal or informal gatherings. Installation is quick and simple, as each Floor Unit is connected to one another in a daisy-chain arrangement. A user-friendly programming interface on the Unit Controller determines audio settings and how the proceedings will be controlled. A configuration is set by using screen menus displayed on a 2x20 LCD, which are accessed and navigated through with four front-panel push buttons. Once a configuration is set, the Unit Controller assumes responsibility for managing the conference, thereby negating the need for an operator. In addition, the Unit Controller has an RS-232 port which, when used in conjunction with Added Value Firmware, supports a PC connection. This allows for computer-based management using touch-screen software (such as the Telecor Visual Console for CDS application) or a connection with a third-party control system for integration with camera and video systems. This manual details the installation and configuration of the equipment required for the Controlled Discussion System. This manual is intended for the system installer who should have an understanding of sound systems and electronics. CDS Installation and Configuration Manual Page A-1

8 A.1 Standard Features Listed below are the standard features of the CDS: Delegate Limit: Automatic Queuing: Priority: VOX: Talk Limit: Timed Release: Disable Speakers: The Delegate Limit sets the maximum number of Delegate Units that can have access to the floor at one time (the number of live Delegate Unit microphones). This limit can be set from one to 120. Delegate Units that request to speak when the Delegate Limit has been reached are automatically placed in a queue. The order in which a Unit is placed in the queue (the hierarchy) is dependent upon a Unit s priority, with higher level Units being placed ahead of lower level Units. The order for Units with equal priority is set on a first-come first-serve basis. Up to four separate Priority levels can be assigned to a Floor Unit. Priorities set the hierarchy of override provisions for the Floor Units, which vary depending if the Delegate Limit is reached or not. In addition, the mute function for a Chairman Unit is enabled or disabled depending on the priority assigned to the Unit. The system can be operated in either a VOX-Enabled or Disabled mode. In VOX-Enabled the microphone remains off until the user speaks. In the VOX- Disabled mode, the microphone remains live for the duration of time that the participant has the floor. Talk Limit determines the length of time a Unit has access to a floor. The time can be set in one-minute increments from 1 to 60 minutes. Timed Release determines the length of time that a Floor Unit remains active after the user stops speaking. Once this time is exceeded, the floor is passed onto the next participant in the queue. This time can be set in five-second increments from 15 to 60 seconds. The speaker on a Unit can be disabled so that it functions only as a microphone station. Disable Microphones: The microphone on a Unit can be disabled so that it functions only as a speaker station. Input Signals: Floor Signal Equalization: The Unit Controller includes inputs for a microphone, a balanced line level signal, and an unbalanced line level signal. Each external input signal can be independently adjusted. The Unit controller has a built-in Hi/Lo shelving type equalizer. The equalizer provides up to 10dB of boost or cut at frequencies below 100 Hz, as well as 10dB of boost or cut at frequencies above 10 khz. Page A-2 Introduction

9 Automatic Feedback Suppression: External Processor: Monitoring: Output signals: Save Configuration: The Unit Controller includes the intelligence to automatically decrease the floor signal level if feedback occurs. Provisions have been made for the insertion of additional external signal processing equipment (graphic equalizer, compressor, frequency shifter, etc.) into the floor signal path. Up to five different signals (Floor, Floor and External Inputs, Processed Floor, Processed and Equalized Floor and External Input, and Main Output) can be monitored aurally using a headphone jack, and visually using a volume unit bar graph on the LCD. The Unit Controller includes ports for the output of a balanced and unbalanced line level signal. A total of four signals (floor, floor and external inputs, microphone, or main output) are available for output. The Unit Controller allows up to six custom Configurations to be saved for retrieval later. This is ideal for applications where the CDS hosts different and unique conference proceedings. A.2 Optional Features RS-232 Connection: Visual Console for CDS: The RS-232 port is supported by Telecor Added Value Firmware 1 to allow for a connection to a PC or a camera and video system. A PC connection enables touch-screen software, such as Telecor Visual Console for CDS, to control conference activities. A camera and video system, connected either directly or indirectly through a third-party control system, can visually display conference participants based on the CDS protocol transmitted from the RS-232 port. Visual Console for CDS is a software package designed specifically for PC control of the CDS. It provides a visual representation of the configuration set-up, allowing the user to easily control the CDS from a PC. 1 Telecor Added Value Firmware consists of the following part numbers: CDS-VC-30, CDS-VC-60, CDS- VC-90, and CDS-VC-120. 10 A.3 Applications To demonstrate the versatility and flexibility of the CDS, five examples showing various types of assemblies are provided. A.3.1 Basic Discussion System Delegates participate (talk and listen) in the conference using individual Floor Units. Proceedings are controlled with a user-determined configuration set up on the Unit Controller. The diagram below shows a straightforward conference of 15 Delegate Units and a single Unit Controller. 11 A.3.2 Discussion System with Audience Participation The conference is open to audience participation, such as what would be required at a city or town council meeting seeking public input. Floor Units consist of both Delegate and Chairman Units. Each Delegate would be typically set to the same status, while VIP and Chairman Units would be set to a higher priority status. The Chairman Unit would be able to override all other delegates. An audio output from the Unit Controller is connected to an external power amplifier, providing a public address facility for the audience. An input for a floor microphone allows the audience to participate in conference proceedings. CDS Installation and Configuration Manual Page A-5

12 A.3.3 Discussion System at Full Capacity The CDS is at its full capacity (120 Floor Units), controlled by a CDS-DC-60 Unit Controller and a CDS-E-60 Expansion Unit Controller. The Unit Controller is equipped with a variety of line level inputs and outputs that enable external analogue equipment used for broadcasting or recording to be connected to the Controller. In addition, audio processing equipment such as an equalizer or compressor may be connected into the signal path of the Unit Controller to enhance the system audio. Page A-6 Introduction

13 A.3.4 Discussion System with Management Software The Telecor Visual Console for CDS application is being used to control the CDS from a PC connected via the RS-232 port. 1 Visual Console for CDS provides a graphical representation of the conference floor using Delegate and Chairman icons. The icons are functional and are used as status indicators or as touch points to manually control Floor Units. 1 The RS-232 port is supported by Telecor Added Value Firmware. 14 A.3.5 Discussion System Integrated with Camera System The CDS is connected to a third-party control system (i.e., PLC) via the RS-232 port, 1 allowing for integration with camera and video systems in order to display images of participants on television monitors, projectors screens, or other video mediums. The RS-232 port transmits operating and configuration information about the CDS, such as when a Floor Unit becomes active. The Control System, using a pre-configured script or driver, then converts the message to the protocol of the Camera System. The Camera System, having been preprogrammed with location presets of each Floor Unit, receives the message from the Control System and then pans to the location of the active Floor Unit. Note If the protocol of the Camera System can be configured to accept the Telecor CDS protocol, then the involvement of the third-party Control System is not required. Equipment Overview The Telecor Controlled Discussion System (CDS) consists of the following: Floor Units - Available in Portable or Flush-Mounted versions Unit Controller - Available in Versions supporting 30 or 60 Floor Units Expansion Unit Controller (optional) - Expands Floor Unit Capacity of System. Available in Versions supporting 30 or 60 additional Floor Units. The total floor capacity can be 120 Floor Units. B.1 Portable Floor Units Portable, table-top Floor Units can be easily and quickly installed and uninstalled for portable conference settings. B.1.1 CDS-DU Delegate Unit The CDS-DU Delegate Unit consists of a speaker, gooseneck microphone, and a request-to-speak button. The microphone incorporates a red ring luminant that lights steady when the Unit is live and flashes when the Unit is waiting to speak in the queue. 1 A headphone jack is available for connecting a pair of headphones or a recording device. The Delegate Unit is equipped with two 8-pin female DIN connectors that allow it to be connected to other Floor Units in a daisy-chain arrangement. Each Delegate Unit has an 8-pin DIP switch that allows it to be set with a unique address for recognition and configuration by the Unit Controller. B.1.2 CDS-CU Chairman Unit The CDS-CU Chairman Unit is similar to the CDS-DU, with the exception that it includes a general mute button. The mute button can be set to operate in one of the following two Modes: Standard Mode (default): When the mute button is pressed once, all other Floor Units are muted while the Chairman Unit microphone is simultaneously activated. Pressing the mute button takes the other Floor Units off mute while leaving the Chairman Unit microphone active. PTT Mode: When the mute button is pressed and held down, all other Floor Units are muted while the Chairman Unit microphone is simultaneously activated, thereby functioning as a Push to Talk button. When the mute button is released, the Chairman Unit microphone is deactivated and the other Floor Units are taken off mute. 1 The flashing of the ring luminant is an optional feature that is enabled through programming. 16 B.2 Flush Mounted Floor Units The functions and features of the Portable Floor Units are also available in flush mounted versions. These are ideal for use in permanent installations where portability is not required. Flush mounted versions are available as modular components to provide the greatest flexibility for customized solutions. Units comprise a remote module that connects a loudspeaker panel and a microphone with either panel-mounted Delegate or Chairman controls. Options are available to have an extended length microphone and a headset jack. B.2.1 Remote Module The Remote Module contains all the audio and control circuitry to function as a Floor Unit when combined with a Microphone with Control Panel and Loudspeaker Panel. The Module is compact and can be unobtrusively mounted underneath a desk or into furniture. Two models are available: the CDS-DU-RM provides the capabilities of a Delegate Unit while the CDS-CU-RM is used for the Chairman location. The Remote Modules are compatible with portable floor units and can be intermixed in any application. It is connected to other Floor Units in a daisy-chain arrangement using two 8-pin female DIN connectors or an 8-pin socket block connector. Part # CDS-DU-RM CDS-CU-RM Description Delegate Remote Module Chairman Remote Module B.2.2 Microphone with Control Panel The Microphone with Control Panel is a uni-directional, electret microphone mounted onto a flush mounted panel by means of a flexible gooseneck stem. Two models are available. The CDS-DU-F is for a Delegate Unit location and incorporates a request-to-speak button. The CDS-CU-F is for a Chairman Unit location and in addition to a request-to-speak button, incorporates a general mute button. 17 B.2.3 Loudspeaker Panel The Loudspeaker Panel (CDS-SP-F) is a flush mounting panel equipped with a 45 Ohm loudspeaker. It is ideal for mounting on tabletops or onto the rear of seats, providing exceptional sound reproduction and intelligibility. B.2.4 Extended Length Microphone Option The CDS-DU-F Delegate Control Panel and CDS-CU-F Chairman Control Panel units can be supplied with an extended stem length microphone. The "L" version is stylistically and functionally identical to the standard version but has an extra long, 18-inch (45.8 cm) microphone stem. 18 B.3 Unit Controllers B.3.1 CDS-DC-30-(110) (220) Unit Controller The CDS-DC-30 is a microprocessor-controlled unit that contains the control electronics, audio facilities, and built-in power supply to support and manage up to 30 Floor Units (Delegate and Chairman). It is available in either a 110VAC or 220VAC configuration. The CDS-DC-30 terminates one run of 30 Floor Units connected in a daisy-chain arrangement. The system configuration is conducted via screen menus displayed on a 2x20 LCD that are accessed and navigated through with four front-panel push buttons. The CDS-DC-30 includes an input for a microphone, and inputs for a balanced and an unbalanced audio source. Each external input level can be independently adjusted. The main output level, which consists of the floor and the external input signals, is also adjustable. Two outputs (balanced and unbalanced) are available for the external broadcast or recording of one of four available signals (floor, floor and external inputs, microphone, or main output). In addition, the CDS-DC-30 has an unbalanced Zone Output port that allows for the external broadcast or recording of just the Floor Unit audio. The CDS-DC-30 features an internal equalizer that allows the floor signal to be altered to achieve the desired sound quality. It also possesses the intelligence to automatically decrease the main output level if feedback occurs. In addition, provisions have been made for the insertion of additional external signal processing equipment (graphic equalizer, compressor, frequency shifter, etc.) into the floor signal path. Up to five different signals can be monitored aurally using the headphone jack, and visually using a volume unit bar graph on the LCD. The CDS-DC-30 mounts onto a flat surface, which is ideal for temporary installations, or it can be mounted into a standard 19 equipment rack for fixed installations. B.3.2 CDS-DC-60-(110) (220) Unit Controller The CDS-DC-60 incorporates the same functionality as the CDS-DC-30, with the exception that it terminates two runs of 30 Floor Units, supporting a total of 60 Floor Units. Each run of Floor Units has an independent unbalanced Zone Output port. This allows for the external broadcast or recording of just the audio from that port s particular run of Floor Units. 19 B.4 Expansion Unit Controllers B.4.1 CDS-E-30-(110) (220) Expansion Unit Controller The CDS-E-30 connects to a CDS-DC-60 to increase the floor capacity by an additional 30 Floor Units for a total capacity of 90 Floor Units. The CDS-E-30 terminates an additional one run of 30 Floor Units connected in a daisy-chain arrangement. It is available in either a 110VAC or 220VAC configuration. The CDS-E-30 mounts onto a flat surface, with the Unit Controller stacked on top of it, or it can be mounted into a standard 19 equipment rack for fixed installations. B.4.2 CDS-E-60-(110) (220) Expansion Unit Controller The CDS-E-60 connects to a CDS-DC-60 to increase the floor capacity by an additional 60 Floor Units for a total capacity of 120 Floor Units. The CDS-E-60 terminates an additional two runs of 30 Floor Units connected in a daisy-chain arrangement. It is available in either a 110VAC or 220VAC configuration. The CDS-E-60 mounts onto a flat surface, with the Unit Controller stacked on top of it, or it can be mounted into a standard 19 equipment rack for fixed installations. 21 B.6 Cables B.6.1 CHAP-DU-6 The CHAP-DU-6 is a six-foot (1.8 m) cable with two male DIN connectors. One CHAP-DU-6 is included with each Floor Unit, which allows it to be connected to another Floor Unit, a Unit Controller, or an Expansion Unit Controller. B.6.2 CHAP-DU-12 The CHAP-DU-12 is an optional 12-foot (3.6 m) cable with two male DIN connectors. It can be used in lieu of the CHAP-DU-6 when the distance between Floor Units, or the distance between a Controller and a Floor Unit, exceeds six feet. B.6.3 CHAP-DU-EXT Extension Cable The CHAP-DU-EXT is an optional 25-foot (7.5 m) extension cable with a female DIN end and a male DIN end. 23 C. Installation This section covers the installation of the Unit Controller, any Expansion Unit Controllers, the Floor Units, and any external devices. C.1 Quick Start Procedure In order to allow a first-time user to quickly and efficiently begin using the CDS, Telecor has outlined a Quick Start Procedure that guides you through the installation procedure and some basic configuration programming. The Quick Start Procedure allows a basic system, as described in Section A.3.1, Basic Discussion System, to be set up, which consists of a quantity of Delegate Units and a Chairman Unit. The operating configuration that Quick Start sets up is referred to as a controlled configuration, where the delegates request to speak by activating a button on the Floor Unit. The Unit Controller maintains delegates in queue based on the chronological order that the requests are made, or First-In First-Out (FIFO). The Chairman Unit has priority, which allows the Chairman to either join a discussion at any time or interrupt a discussion while muting all other delegates. The Quick Start Procedure consists of 10 sections in the Installation and Configuration chapters that are identified by the following label. The outline of the entire procedure is shown in the flow chart on the next page. The Quick Start Procedure is only intended to get you started and will enable you to configure the system based on the Factory Default Configuration (See Appendix 3: Default Configuration.) This is the most basic of configurations. In order to explore the full potential of the system, Telecor encourages you to become familiar with the detailed information contained in this manual. 27 C.3 Setting Floor Unit Addresses Each Floor Unit has a DIP switch that allows the Unit to be set with a unique address. A unique address is required so that the Floor Unit is recognized by the Unit Controller for configuration and proper operation. Set these addresses before connecting the Floor Units. The DIP switch consists of 8 switches that represent the Unit address in binary format. Switches 1 through 7 are used to determine the address, and 8 is used for mute button mode of operation (See Section C.4 ). A lowered switch is off and a raised switch is on. The value of a raised switch depends on the switch position: Switch Position Value For Mute Button Mode of Operation The Unit address is the sum value of all raised switches. For example, if switches 4 (value 8) and 7 (value 64) were raised, the address would be 72 (8 + 64). On the bottom of each Floor Unit, in the Unit Address box, write down the address using indelible ink. C.3.1 Address Switch Positions The following page consists of the switch positions for addresses 1 through 120. Photocopy the page for each configuration. 29 C.4 Setting Mode of Operation for Chairman Unit Mute Button Two methods of operation can be set for the mute button of a Chairman Unit by raising or lowering DIP Switch 8 on the back of the unit. Lowering DIP Switch 8 puts the Chairman Unit into Standard Mode (default). When the mute button is pressed once, all other Floor Units are muted while the Chairman Unit microphone is simultaneously activated. Pressing the mute button takes the other Floor Units off mute while leaving the Chairman Unit microphone active. Raising DIP Switch 8 puts the Chairman Unit into PTT Mode. When the mute button is pressed and held down, all other Floor Units are muted while the Chairman Unit microphone is simultaneously activated, thereby functioning as a Push to Talk button. When the mute button is released, the Chairman Unit microphone is deactivated and the other Floor Units are taken off mute. CDS Installation and Configuration Manual Page C-7

31 The Unit Controller is simply placed on a flat surface. If an Expansion Unit Controller is used, the Unit Controller is stacked on top of it. Plug the Units into a regular AC wall outlet or power bar. See Section C.8, Connecting the Expansion Unit Controller, to connect the Expansion Unit Controller. Floor Units connect to one another in a daisy-chain fashion. The first Floor Unit in the chain connects to a TO CDS-CU/DU UNIT port on the Unit Controller or Expansion Unit Controller (see page C-8). Each port is capable of supporting 30 Floor Units. Note: The maximum overall cable length (of each run or chain) between the Unit Controller and last Floor Unit cannot exceed 400 feet. 1. Connect one end of a CHAP-DU-6 cable into a Floor Unit port (labelled TO CDS-CU/DU UNIT). 2. Connect the other end of the CHAP-DU-6 to a port of the first Floor Unit of the run or chain. The two ports on a Floor Unit are interchangeable. If the distance from the Unit Controller to the first Floor Unit exceeds six feet, the CHAP-DU-EXT extension cable (ordered separately) must be used. 3. Using the supplied standard six-foot CHAP-DU-6 cables, connect the remaining Floor Units on the run to each other. If extra length is required between the Floor Units, use the optional 12-foot CHAP-DU-12 cables (ordered separately). 4. The last Floor Unit of each run must be identified as such by vertically install two shunts onto its END UNIT header pins. See Section C.7, End Floor Unit Terminator, for more information. Cable Length When installing a run of Floor Units, the overall cable length from the Controller to the last Floor Unit on the run must be taken in to consideration due to line loss. The more Floor Units on the line translates into a shorter cable length, while less Floor Units translates into longer cable length. To aid in the mounting procedure of the Floor Units, full scale cut-out templates for the Loudspeaker Panel and Control Panel can be found in Appendix 5. Once mounted, the Microphone Panel and Speaker Panel are wired back to the Remote Module. Ports for these buttons can be found at J14 on the Microphone Panel. C.6.4 Interconnecting Flush-Mounted Floor Units The DIN receptacle in the floor or wall box terminates the Remote Module of the first Floor Unit. Additional Remote Modules are interconnected using standard cabling terminated at the DIN receptacles of each Remote Module and/or using Belden 9873 or equivalent cable terminated onto the 8-pin socket block connector of each Remote Module. Note: The maximum overall cable length (of each run or chain) between the Unit Controller and last Floor Unit cannot exceed 400 feet. Using DIN Receptacles for Interconnection 1. Using standard six-foot CHAP-DU-6 cables, connect the Remote Modules of each Floor Unit via the DIN receptacles. The two DIN receptacles on a Floor Unit are interchangeable. If extra length is required between the Floor Units, use the optional 12-foot CHAP-DU-12 cables (ordered separately). Remember that the maximum number of Floor Units on a run is 30. 40 2. The last Floor Unit of each run must have its END UNIT header pins shunted to identify the unit as the end unit. See Section C.7, End Floor Unit Terminator for more information. Using 8-pin Socket Block Connectors for Interconnection The 8-pin socket block connectors can be used in lieu of or in combination with the DIN receptacle connection method. Complete the following steps: 1. Unplug the 8-pin socket block from the header pins of the Remote Module. Terminate the Belden 9873 wires into the socket block following the diagram below. The diagram below shows a single cable connection to a socket block. In most cases, the socket block terminates two cables, one coming from the previous Remote Module and one going to the next Remote Module in the daisy-chain in a parallel fashion. If the socket block is to secure two cables, terminate the wires from the cable going to the next Remote Module in the chain before securing the first set of wires into place. Note: Please note that the shield from the audio pair and the shield from the data pair share the same termination point. 2. Once the wires are terminated into their proper positions, secure them into place with a precision flathead screwdriver and plug the socket block back into the header pins. 3. Wire additional Remote Modules in the same manner. The last Remote Module in the chain only terminates one set of wires. Remember that the maximum number of Floor Units on a run is 30. This is accomplished by vertically installing two shunts onto its END UNIT header pins. These pins are located to the right of the DIP Switch on the rear of the Unit. Note: When using a CDS-DC-60 there are up to two runs (or chains) of up to 30 Floor Units per run (60 total); the last Floor Unit of each run must be terminated. With a CDS-DC-60 and a CDS-E-60 there may be up to four runs (or chains) of up to 30 Floor Units per run (120 total). The last Floor Unit on each of the runs (up to four) must be terminated. 44 C.9 External Connections The Unit Controller includes an input for a microphone, and inputs for a balanced and an unbalanced line level signal from an external audio source. A balanced and an un-balanced line level output are available for the external broadcast or recording of various signals (see Section D.8, Outputs. ) In addition, each Floor Unit Port has an accompanying unbalanced output for the external broadcast or recording of its zone (the Floor Units connected to the Floor Unit port). An external Processing Unit can be connected for the alteration of the floor signal (see Processing Unit, Section C.9.1 ). Refer to the diagram below for the location of the various input and output ports. C.9.1 Processing Unit The Unit Controller includes an unbalanced output and input port for the connection of an external Processing Unit for alteration of the floor signal. The signal level at the output is -10dBu (300 mv rms) nominal. The gain of the Processing Unit should be set to unity since the input is expecting a -10dBu level as well. After the Processing Unit is connected, remove the shunt located at BYPASS, which is situated between the Processing Unit ports. Page C-22 Installation

45 C.9.2 Line Level Inputs/Outputs and Microphone Connections The level of the various output signals provided by the Unit Controller is 0.3 V rms. The level of any input line level signals should also be 0.3 V rms. The microphone signal should be of low impedance. Equipment is connected to the unbalanced input/output terminations via standard phono connectors located on the back of the Unit Controller. Equipment connected to the balanced input/output terminations, as well as the microphone, are connected via XLR-3 type connectors using two wires and a shield as shown in the figure below. C.9.3 RS-232 Port A Model A Unit Controller running Telecor Added Value Firmware supports the RS-232 port, which allows for a connection to a PC or a camera and video system. A PC connection enables touch-screen software, such as Telecor Visual Console for CDS, to control conference activities. A camera and video system, connected either directly or indirectly through a third-party control system, can visually display conference participants based on the CDS protocol transmitted from the RS-232 port. 50 D.3 Confirming Hardware Setup Before system configuration is carried out, ensure that the Unit Controller detects all of the hardware that has been connected to the Unit Controller. Using the navigation buttons, complete the following steps: 1. Enter INFORMATION > System Information. 2. In the SYSTEM INFORMATION sub-menu, three items are available: Num. of Term. Units - Displays the total number of Terminal Units detected (Remember that a CDS-DC-30 and a CDS-E-30 each have one Terminal Unit. A CDS-DC-60 and a CDS-E-60 each have two Terminal Units) Num. of Chair. Units - Displays the number of Chairman Units detected Number of Del. Units - Displays the number of Delegate Units detected If the Chairman Units or Delegate Units do not match the actual number of connected Units, it is possible that there are duplicate Floor Unit addresses. 51 D.4 Setting to Factory Default Configuration Prior to any user configuration, it is recommended that the CDS be set to the Factory Default configuration. This clears any previous settings and ensures the CDS is defaulted to a usable configuration. If following the Quick Start Procedure, setting to Factory Default ensures that all Floor Units are set to their inherent defaults, meaning Chairman Units are set to Chairman Priorities, and Delegate Units are set with Normal Priorities (Chairman Priority is higher than Normal Priority). To set the configuration to Factory Default, complete the following steps: 1. Enter SETUP > Recall Setup. In the RECALL SETUP sub-menu, the # 1 Factory Default Setup is displayed. 2. Press ENTER. 52 D.5 Delegate Limit The Delegate Limit sets the maximum number of Floor Units with a non-chairman priority that can have access to the floor simultaneously (the number of live microphones). Increase or decrease the limit by using the UP and DOWN buttons. The minimum is one Unit and the maximum is 120 Units. 3. Press ENTER when the desired limit has been selected. 55 D.6.2 VOX (Voice Operated Transmission) - Global Settings The microphone on the Floor Units can be set for VOX Enabled or Disabled operation. In the VOX Enabled mode, even though a specific Unit may have access to the floor, the microphone remains off until the user begins to speak. In the VOX Disabled mode, whenever a Unit is granted access to the floor, the microphone is immediately turned on and remains live until access expires. Listed below are the items that must be set in the VOX sub-menu. On for All: Off for All: VOX Sensitivity: VOX Release: This sets VOX on a global basis whereby all Floor Units will operate in the VOX Enabled mode. This sets VOX on a global basis whereby all floor units will operate in the VOX Disabled mode. The VOX circuit on a Unit works by monitoring the audio level coming in from the microphone. If the audio level exceeds a certain threshold, the Unit switches into talk mode. When VOX is activated, there is a delay between the time the participant stops talking and when the Unit switches back to listen mode. Setting VOX on a Global Basis: To set VOX on a Global Basis, complete the following steps: 1. Enter SETUP > Del./Ch. Global Set. > VOX for All. 2. 57 D.6.3 Timed Release - Global Settings Timed Release determines the length of time that a Floor Unit remains active after the user stops speaking. Once this time is exceeded, the floor is passed onto the next participant in the queue. The time can be set in five-second increments from 15 to 60 seconds. Timed Release can be enabled or disabled through global or individual settings. If Timed Release is not enabled, a Floor Unit remains active after the user stops speaking until switched off by the user, the Talk Limit timer expires, or the system is reset. Enabling or Disabling Timed Release on a Global Basis: To enable or disable Timed Release on a global basis, complete the following steps: 1. Enter SETUP > Del./Ch. Global Set. > Timed Release. 2. In the TIMED RELEASE sub-menu, scroll to one of the following items: On for All Deleg. - Enables the Timed Release for all Units without a Chairman Priority Off for All - Disables the Timed Release for all Units regardless of Priority 3. Therefore, the newly-promoted Unit has instant access to the floor and Mute capability. If a non-chairman Priority Unit is promoted to Normal or Privileged while in queue or while it has the floor, the promotion is delayed until the Unit next gains access to the queue or floor. Any demotion of a Unit while in queue or while it has the floor does not take effect until the Unit next gains access to the queue or floor. 69 D.9.1 Levels The levels of the following audio signals can be adjusted with the Unit Controller: Main Output: Microphone Input: Balanced Input: Unbalanced Input: The audio signal that is being transmitted to the Floor Unit speakers. It consists of a mix of the floor signal (altered through a Processing Unit or the internal equalizer), the microphone signal, and the signal from the balanced and unbalanced inputs. The floor signal refers to the raw audio from the Floor Unit microphones. The signal from the microphone connected to the MICROPHONE port. The signal from the external audio source connected to the BALANCE IN port. The signal from the external audio source connected to the UNBAL. IN port. To adjust the level of an audio signal, complete the following steps: 1. Enter OPERATION > Levels. 2. Select one of the above four signals that you wish to set the level of, and press ENTER. 3. By pressing the UP and DOWN buttons, the percentage number on the right side of the screen changes accordingly. This number represents the percentage of total available output. If a signal is present while the adjustment is being made, the volume unit (VU) bar graph illuminates until the nominal level is reached. This is indicated by the large vertical bars on the far right of the display. When adjusting audio levels, ensure that the peak signal does not exceed the nominal level bars. It is recommended that the Main Output level be set first by adjusting the level until the audio being broadcast through the Floor Units is at a satisfactory level, yet below the feedback threshold. 73 D.9.3 Feedback Suppression The Unit Controller has a built-in Feedback Suppressor. The controller can automatically sense runaway feedback, upon which it automatically drops the gain by 5dB, immediately stopping the feedback. Then gradually the gain is restored at a rate of 1dB/0.2 sec to 1dB less than the previous value. This process will quickly suppress feedback once it starts, and then slowly bring the levels back up to just a little less then where feedback previously occurred. The whole process will repeat should feed back re-occur, once again dropping the gain a further 1 db lower than the previous level. The process continues until no more acoustic feedback occurs yet there is enough gain for the system to operate effectively. Note: Automatic Feedback Suppression should not be relied upon to set the Main Output level. The Main Output Level should be set prior to enabling Automatic Feedback Suppression. Automatic Feedback Suppression is designed to provide a temporary solution in the case that feedback occurs. If feedback does occur the Automatic Feedback Suppression will activate, but the technician probably still needs to readjust the Main Output Level. 74 Feedback Suppression may be enabled or disabled. It is recommended that the Main Output Level be set prior to enabling this feature. 75 D.9.4 Equalization A High/Low shelving type equalizer is included in the Unit Controller. The equalizer provides up to 10 db of boost or cut at 300 Hz, as well as 10dB of boost or cut at 5 khz. Use the equalizer to achieve the truest reproduction of sound quality, increase the intelligibility, or decrease feedback. Adjusting the Low Frequency To adjust the low frequency portion of the audio spectrum, complete the following steps: 1. Enter OPERATION > Equalizer. 2. Two screens are available: Low Freq. Equalizer - below 100 Hz High Freq. Equalizer - above 10 khz 3. Select the LOW FREQ. EQUALIZER screen and press ENTER. A bar graph is displayed. 4. Use the UP and DOWN buttons to adjust the boost and cut of the low frequency. 5. The effect of the adjustments can be heard through headphones plugged into the Unit Controller s headphone jack. 77 D.10 Microphone Queue Lights The ring luminant on a Floor Unit microphone is able to flash in the following situations: In queue and not next to speak - flashes once every eight seconds. In queue and next to speak - flashes twice every eight seconds. Muted by Chairman Unit - flashes twice every four seconds. Ten seconds remaining on Talk Limit Timer or Timed Release Timer - flashes rapidly. The flashing of the luminant when the Floor Unit is in a queue or when the Floor Unit is muted is enabled or disabled on a global basis. The flashing of the luminant when the Talk Limit or Timed Release Timer is expiring is enabled by default and cannot be disabled. To enable or disable the flashing of the luminant when the Floor Unit is in a queue and when it is muted, complete the following steps: 1. Enter SETUP > Mic. Queue Lights. 2. In the MIC. QUEUE LIGHTS sub-menu, two items are available: On for All - Queue and Mute flashing is turned on for all Units Off for All - Queue and Mute flashing is turned off for all Units 3. Select the item for the Units and then press ENTER. The item blinks twice to verify that it has been set. 78 D.11 Changing the RS-232 Port Baud Rate A Model A Unit Controller, running Telecor Added Value Firmware 1, supports the RS-232 port for connection to a PC or a camera and video system. By default the Baud Rate is set to bps, which is the recommended rate when running Visual Console for CDS. Ensure that the COM Port of the PC running Visual Console for CDS is also set to Three other Baud Rates are available for the RS-232 Port. If the RS-232 Port is used with another application, ensure that the Baud Rate matches with the recommended rate of the connected device. To change the RS-232 Port Baud rate, complete the following steps: 1. Enter SETUP > Serial Port > Baud Rate. 2. In the BAUD RATE sub-menu, four Baud rates are available: bits/sec bits/sec bits/sec bits/sec. 3. Select the Baud rate for the RS-232 Port and press ENTER. The Baud rate blinks twice to verify that it has been set. Note 1: The Serial Port sub-menu is not available if Telecor Added Value Firmware is not installed. Note 2: If Telecor Added Value Firmware is installed 2 and the Serial Port sub-menu is not available, it is most likely that the total number of Floor Units exceeds the firmware limitation. If this is the case, power off the system, remove the excess Floor Units, and power up the system again. 1 Telecor Added Value Firmware consists of the following part numbers: CDS-VC-30, CDS-VC-60, CDS- VC-90, and CDS-VC-120. 79 D.12 Saving and Recalling Configurations The operational characteristics of a configuration can be saved for retrieval later. The Unit Controller allows up to six custom Configurations to be saved. This is ideal for applications where the CDS hosts different and unique conference proceedings. In addition to the six customizable Configurations, the Unit Controller includes a Factory Default configuration that cannot be overwritten. See Appendix 3, Default Configuration, to view the default configuration settings. Note: If the hardware setup or the address of a Unit has changed since the last time the Configuration was used, the Configuration may not function properly. D.12.1 Saving a Configuration To save a configuration, complete the following steps: 1. Enter SETUP > Save Setup. 2. In the SAVE SETUP screen, six Setups (from #2 to #7) are available for saving a Configuration. The word Empty appears if the Setup is not holding a Configuration. 3. Select a Setup to save the Configuration and press ENTER. 4. If the Setup was empty it blinks twice to verify that it has been saved. or If the Setup already holds a Configuration, the OVERWRITE SETUP #X screen appears. 87 Appendix 1: Faults The CDS is able to detect certain faults that may be affecting Floor Unit operation. A detectable fault will force the Fault LED on the front panel of the Unit Controller to light steady. The fault can then be pinpointed to a specific Terminal Unit or Floor Unit. A Terminal Unit is a separate circuit board in the Unit Controller or Expansion Unit Controller that connects one run (or chain) of 30 Floor Units. The tables on this page and the next describe the faults that can be detected by the CDS, and the required solution. Terminal Unit Faults Fault Message Description Solutions Low Voltage Outdated firmware Too Many Del. Units Low DC power voltage reported by the Terminal Unit. Earlier firmware version found in the Terminal Unit. More than 30 Floor Units are connected to the Terminal Unit. Ensure there are no more than 30 Floor Units connected in one run. Disconnect run from Terminal Unit. If Fault still exists, there may be a failure with power supply. A damaged Floor Unit or Floor Unit cable may exist. Attempt to isolate the problem by disconnecting Floor Unit(s) from run and seeing if fault still occurs. 1 Contact Technical Support to obtain the correct firmware version. 2 Reconnect additional Units to another Terminal Unit. 1 2 It is not necessary to restart the system when attempting to isolate a fault.
