2 HydroLynx Systems, Inc. Model 50386D Decoder Receiving and Unpacking Carefully unpack all components and compare to the packing list. Notify HydroLynx Systems immediately concerning any discrepancy. Inspect equipment to detect any damage that may have occurred during shipment. In the event of damage, any claim for loss must be filed immediately with the carrier by the consignee. If the equipment was shipped via Parcel Post or UPS, contact HydroLynx Systems for instructions. Returns If equipment is to be returned to the factory for any reason, call HydroLynx between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Pacific Time to request a Return Authorization Number (RA#). Include with the returned equipment a description of the problem and the name, address, and daytime phone number of the sender. Carefully pack the equipment to prevent damage during the return shipment. Call HydroLynx for packing instructions in the case of delicate or sensitive items. If packing facilities are not available, take the equipment to the nearest Post Office, UPS, or other freight service and obtain assistance with packaging. Please write the RA# on the outside of the box. Warranty HydroLynx Systems warrants that its products are free from defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service for a period of one year from the date of shipment from the factory. HydroLynx Systems' obligations under this warranty are limited to, at HydroLynx's option: (I) replacing; or (ii) repairing; any product determined to be defective. In no case shall HydroLynx Systems' liability exceed product's original purchase price. This warranty does not apply to any equipment that has been repaired or altered, except by HydroLynx Systems, or that has been subjected to misuse, negligence, or accident. It is expressly agreed that this warranty will be in lieu of all warranties of fitness and in lieu of the warranty of merchantability. 5 Model 50386D Decoder HydroLynx Systems, Inc. 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 General Description The Model 50386D Decoder works with the 50386R at the central site to receive and decode ALERT protocol data. The 50386R Receiver outputs ALERT Data as ALERT audio tones. The 50386D decodes these ALERT audio tones into an RS-232 ALERT Data report at 300 baud. Weight: 3 lbs. 2.0 INSTALLATION The ALERT Receiver/Decoder combination is designed to allow the decoder to be installed next to the central site computer while the receiver is installed near the antenna. This design keeps the RF cable and RS-232 cable runs to their minimums. This also lowers the risk of damage due to lightning strikes. 2.1 Site Selection The 50386D decoder should be installed within ten feet of the central site computer. 2.2 Connections All wiring connections are located on the back panel. 6 HydroLynx Systems, Inc. Model 50386D Decoder CAUTION: Use shielded cable. Connect the shield to Ground wire at the receiver end only.! Attach the Receiver/Decoder cable to the SIG IN 6-pin connector.! Attach the computer cable to either of the standard 25 pin male RS232 connectors.! Attach the 3-pin Power supply cable to POWER 3-pin connector.! Plug Power supply AC power cable into the central site's electrical power outlet. For best results, use surge protection and a battery backed power supply for all computer power connections.! Verify the POWER Lamp in ON. 2.3 Mounting The 50386D is designed for "desktop" indoor use and installation. 3.0 THEORY OF OPERATION The 50386D Decoder is part of the 50386DCU family of products. It uses three PCB s: the 50386MODEM filters the ALERT audio tones from the 50386R Receiver, the 50386SLB is the input/output platform, and the 50386PCOS is the controller. The 50386PCOS is running the lynx386.exe program. The inputs and outputs are controlled by the parameter in the configuration file 50386D.cfg. The decoder is powered by 115 Vac/12Vdc power supply and has a POWER lamp indicating power is ON. The power supply should use the central site's uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for back-up. 3.1 Inputs/Outputs The 50386D receives ALERT format FSK tones as its input signal. The FSK modem circuitry converts these tones into RS232 logic level signals for output to a computer. The ALERT signal format is 2133 Hz for a logical "1" and 1920 Hz for a logical "0". The output transmission rate is 300 baud MODEM The 50386MODEM PCB inputs the FSK tones and performs two tasks. First, the modem filters the audio tones for output to the SLB. Second, the modem determines if a valid ALERT message is being received. This task controls the Carrier Detect (CD) signal output to the SLB. Refer to Section Carrier Detect (CD): P5 pin SLB and 50386PCOS The 50386RP SLB and PCOS receive the filtered ALERT FSK audio tones and CD signal as inputs (see Section ALERT RX LED). When a CD signal is received, the ALERT FSK tones are decoded into an ALERT ID number and Data value and stored into memory. The ID number and Data value are compared and if the repeat criteria are met an ALERT Page 6 WD102681

(See Section Communications Port.) 3.2 Controls The Configuration file control the automatic ALERT Decoder functions and is programmed using the ScadaLynx Toolbox. Manual testing of the decoder is accomplished through the Test Tab in the ScadaLynx Toolbox, through the HyperTerminal Console function keys, or hardware switches on the 50386SLB PCB. Some of the information in this section is taken from the ScadaLynx Toolbox User s Manual, Document number WD102712, and the 50386DCU Operating Manual, Document number WD The information included in this section deals directly to the function of the decoder. To understand the complete functions of the software parameters and hardware mentioned in this section, refer to those manuals Configuration file The standard configuration file for the 50386D is: 50386D.cfg. The parameters which are specific to the 50386D are set under the ScadaLynx Toolbox I/O, Reports, Communications, and Settings Tabs Communications Tab The Communications Tab set the parameters for the 50386DCU communications ports. These include: one ALERT radio port and two RS-232 serial COM ports: COM1 and COM2. The 50386D receives the ALERT data on the ALERT radio port and repeats the data out the COM2 serial port. Each communications port has four Sub-Tabs: Settings, Transmit, Receiver, and Repeater. WD Page 7

Model 50386D Decoder The Receiver and Repeater Sub-Tabs are not applicable for the COM2 Transmitter Port settings I/O Tab & Sub-Tabs The I/O Tab and the Sub-Tabs configure the sensor inputs and outputs. For the Decoder those are the voltage monitor inputs: Decoder Voltage, and Receiver Battery Voltage. Each sensor input on the Point List has the four Sub-Tabs: Scaling, Sampling, Reporting, and Alarms. The Scaling and the Reporting Sub Tabs are the only applicable Sub-Tabs for these I/O points. To configure the Voltage I/O points, set the parameter as shown above Reports Tab The Reports Tab defines the reporting schemes which are assigned to the I/O points. To configure the 50386D for No Power Down set the Setting Tab parameters as below: Verify that the Power Down When Idle box is not checked. 4.0 TESTING AND MAINTENANCE CAUTION: HydroLynx recommends service be performed by trained personnel only. 4.1 Testing RS232 Signal! Attach an oscilloscope to the RS232 cable port. Pin 3 is signal and Pin 7 is ground.! Verify that the standby voltage (no transmission) is between Vdc. The typical voltage is between -6 Vdc.! Initiate a transmission to the receiver.! Verify that the signal is a square wave. Typical voltage levels are +6Vdc and -6Vdc Input Signal Page 12 WD102681

Verify that the signal is an 1.0 Vpp tone ±200 mvpp.! AC Votmeter reading: 350m Vac RMS ±70 Vac RMS!
