Analysis of published and website materials such as product catalogs, company reports, new product releases, news releases, etc. Methodology for this year s edition of the terminal block study relied heavily on the Bishop & Associates database (and periodic updates) and on ongoing surveys that Bishop conducts with the connector industry. Portions of these surveys are often cited in the monthly Bishop Report and include such research as monthly and year to date orders and shipments, connector industry outlook, How s Business OEM s (a review of how dozens of OEM companies have fared in the most recent quarter as to sales and profitability), analysis of public connector companies, book to bill ratios and price index analysis. Prior year editions of this study included telephone interviews with most of the major terminal block manufacturers. However, this year s update relies mainly on the findings of many of the ongoing Bishop surveys of the industry and the company s market and geographic databases. Product Definitions Barrier Terminal Blocks, Single Row Single Row blocks with barriers are generally used in applications involving factory wiring that is completed with below the board attachments such as to printed circuit boards or other type contacts. This leaves above the board hardware free for additional factory wiring or field installations. These blocks may have a high rise provision to permit the expedient passage of flux and rinse in wave solder operations. Design criteria for successful circuit board application include: (1) reliable strain relief of the solder connections through usage of strong housings and rigid interlocking of housings, (2) reliable anchoring system in the printed circuit board hole, (3) use of metal components that will not contaminate solder bath, (4) use of easy to solder pins, (5) degassing channels on the housing bottom, and (6) ease of mounting to the board. Typically, PCB mounted Phoenix Contact Pluggable PCB T.B. blocks are available in single and double level configurations with both millimeter and inch pin spacings. Modular construction simplifies ordering and reduces inventory. Pluggable versions speed and simplify board replacement and reduce costly downtime and misconnections. Power Terminal Blocks Terminal blocks capable of operating under conditions of high ambient temperatures (to +140 C; +300 F) and high current applications (through Amps). Design and application criteria include: (1) easy circuit marking capability, (2) easy access to mounting dimensions, wire ranges and tightening torques, (3) small package design where practical, (4) capability of distributing power to multiple loads, (5) allow easy connection of field wiring to a cabinet, (6) meet appropriate industry spec, such as copperonly in the automotive industry. End uses can be as diverse as appliances, vending machines, utilities, engineering/construction applications and security systems.
