7 L K On the surface or underground: Pöyry knows the best, safest and most efficient ways to get electricity to consumers, businesses and production facilities. The evaluation of cable vs. overhead line transmission systems requires a comprehensive study of technical, economical and environmental aspects. Whereas in some cases overhead lines are chosen as the most cost-effective way of transmitting electricity, cable solutions have to be taken into consideration in cases of lack of aboveground space or if the local topography does not allow for overhead lines. UNDERGROUND CABLES If a customer s power distribution project cannot be achieved through aboveground cables, it may be addressed through underground cables. Pöyry is one of the few consulting firms that have the special knowledge in the layout, monitoring and operation of underground cable systems. CABLE RATING Pöyry are experts in all aspects of cable system engineering, especially in the field of thermal cable rating. We can design cable systems with or without thermal backfill, with underground ducts or pipes and duct bank arrangements, or with tunnels featuring optional ventilation. We offer a wide range of services regarding cable installations for various conditions. 9 Selection of references PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT Feasibility study Luapula river (Zambia/Africa) Feasibility study of hydroelectric projects on the Luapula River for the Harza Engineering Company Int. L.P. in Zambia/Africa. The study included a power market survey, a load forecast and power system planning studies for 66 kv and 330 kv networks. Feasibility study Hvdc-Submarine-Cable (Finland/Estonia) Feasibility study of an HVDC-submarine cable for a group of private investors. The objective of the study was to determine the feasibility of a HVDC connection with a transmission capacity of MW between two separate 400 kv and 330 kv AC networks. DESIGN & TENDERING Power Line Limberg II (Austria) Design, routing and tender specification of a combined 380/110 kv overhead line in the mountainous region of Kaprun regarding the conditions of avalanches, mud flows and rock fall. Grid connection of the existing pump storage scheme of Kaprun and its extension by a power cavern with two machine sets. North Oman Reinforcement Project of Pdo (Sultanate Of Oman) Detailed engineering services for the new 132 kv substations at Yibal and extensions works in five substations with 294 km of 132 kv overhead lines. Nam Ngum 2 (Laos/Thailand) Independent owner s engineer for a feasibility study. Tender design and detailed design for 230 kv GIS substations and a 250 km overhead line connecting Laos and Thailand s power grids. Casimcea Windpark (Romania) Technical advice for the authorisation procedure, tender documentation and realisation phase of the 400 kv grid connection for a 600 MVA wind park. DESIGN & PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION Bisamberg Substation (Austria) Step-by-step rehabilitation of an existing 220/110 kv substation as well as expansion with a 380 kv switchgear. The early project phase included the redesign of the 220 and 110 kv switchgear and the new design of a 380 kv switchgear, including the integration of two 300 MVA step-up transformers. The realisation phase included project management, installation, commissioning and as-built documentation. Salzburg Substation (Austria) Conceptual design for an essential transmission grid expansion in Austria. Special attention paid to the requirements for a first operation phase of 220 kv, a second operation phase at 380 kv and a third step for integration of a 110 kv switchgear including three coupling transformers 300 MVA. Project coordination for the realisation phase under EIA conditions. National Grid Control Centre (Austria) Design, delivery and installation of a fully redundant AC/ DC-supply of the new control centre for the Austrian transmission system operator. The energy supply is ensured by two medium voltage transformers, two emergency diesel generators, dual battery systems, 220 V as well as 48 V, and UPS systems. PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION Neudorf/Werndorf Switchgear (Austria) General contractor for complete redesign and recons truction of 110 kv switchgear in operation. Due to the importance of this station the rehabilitation program had to be fulfilled step-by-step using temporary 110 kv cables and feeders. A complex time schedule for 20 feeders and three busbars had to be coordinated within the grid operator Steweag-Steg. Substations At Dubai Festival City (U.A.E.) Pöyry was responsible for the project management and design review of civil, electrical and MEP, including site supervision up to commissioning and handover of the 132/11 kv substations at Dubai Festival City. Gönyű switching station (Hungary) Planning of the power plant grid integration project, support of the permission procedure, detailed civil and electric design and site engineering support in the construction of a one and a half circuit breaker switching station in Gönyű and an approximately 14 km long 400 kv double circuit line to access the existing Győr-Litér 400 kv overhead line.
