3 IAEG-SDGs Inter-agency and Expert Group on Sustainable Development Goal Indicators IAEG-SDGs tasked with: Developing the global indicator framework (Agenda 2030: A/Res/70/1) Providing technical support for the implementation of the global framework Regularly reviewing methodological developments, the indicators and their metadata Regularly reviewing capacity-building activities Composition of the IAEG-SDGs: 26 member states (SIDS: Cabo Verde, Cuba, Fiji, Jamaica and Samoa) Chair of the Statistical Commission (Brazil) Observers, other member states, representatives of regional commissions, and regional and international agencies
4 UN Resolution (A/71/75) Work of the UN Statistical Commission pertaining to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Adopts the Global Indicator Framework (GIF) with: GIF refined yearly Comprehensive review in 2020 and in 2025 Requests the Statistical Commission to coordinate substantive and technical work on international statistical standards Requests the Secretary General to facilitate collaboration between NSSs and IOs to ensure harmonized and consistent data Reiterates the adherence to the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics. Welcomes the Cape Town Global Action Plan
5 Global Indicator Framework 232 unique indicators, addressing each and every one of the goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda: Tier 1: concepts, methods and standards available and largely produced by countries Tier 2: concepts, methods and standards available but data are not regularly produced by countries Tier 3: concepts, methods and standards not yet available National indicators are driven by national development policies and priorities National indicators are aligned with global indicators to the extent possible and/or complement the GIF ( domestication )
6 HLG-PCCB High-level Group for Partnership, Coordination and Capacity-building HLG-PCCB tasked with: Provides leadership for SDG indicators implementation process Promotes national ownership and fostering capacity-building, partnership and coordination Fosters the modernization and harmonization of data infrastructures Provides guidance on the content and organization of the United Nations World Data Forums Composition of the HLG-PCCB: 22 member states (SIDS: Bahamas, St. Lucia and Vanuatu) Chair of the Statistical Commission (Brazil)
7 Cape Town Global Action Plan (CT-GAP) for Sustainable Development Data Framework for the design and implementation of country-led statistical capacity building activities necessary to achieve the 2030 Agenda Consists of key actions under six strategic areas: 1. Coordination and strategic leadership 2. Innovation and modernization of NSS 3. Basic statistical activities and programmes 4. Data dissemination and use 5. Multi-stakeholder partnerships 6. Resource mobilization Developed by HLG-PCCB and launched at the 1 st UN Data Forum in Cape Town, South Africa in January 2017 Adopted by the Statistical Commission at its 48th Session in 2017
8 UN World Data forum (UN-WDF) Recommendation from the United Nations Secretary-General s Independent Expert and Advisory Group: A World That Counts Platform for cooperation, dialogue and partnership with the data community, users, the civil society and stakeholders 1 st UN-WDF hosted by Statistics South Africa from 15 to 18 January 2017 in Cape Town Six thematic areas: 1. New approaches to capacity development for better data 2. Innovations and synergies across different data ecosystems 3. Leaving no one behind 4. Understanding the world through data 5. Data principles and governance 6. The way forward 1,400 participants, over 80 sessions and 322 speakers
