1 COWLEY COLLEGE & Area Vocational Technical School COURSE PROCEDURE FOR Student Level: This course is open to students on the college level in either the freshman or sophomore year. Catalog Description: CIS 1896 ORACLE DATABASE: PL/SQL PROGRAMMING (3 hrs) An introductory course to give students an introduction to PL/SQL programming. PL/SQL will be used to create database objects and view, change, add and delete records from within statements and a program unit. Prerequisites: Basic Computer Skills ORACLE DATABASE: PL/SQL PROGRAMMING CIS Credit Hours Controlling Purpose: This course is designed to help the student increase their knowledge concerning developing efficient PL/SQL statements and program units to manipulate data in a relational database. The student will learn the basics of the SQL language. Learner Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to write PL/SQL that retrieve, update, add, and delete records from tables. The student will also be able to write PL/SQL program units against records or database objects. Units Outcomes and Criterion Based Evaluation Key for Core Content: The following defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other content as time allows. Evaluation Key: A = All major and minor goals have been achieved and the achievement level is considerably above the minimum required for doing more advanced work in the same field. B = All major goals have been achieved, but the student has failed to achieve some of the less important goals. However, the student has progressed to the point where the goals of work at the next level can be easily achieved. C = All major goals have been achieved, but many of the minor goals have not been achieved. In this grade range, the minimum level of proficiency represents a person who has achieved the major goals to the minimum amount of preparation necessary for taking more advanced work in the same field, but without any major handicap of inadequacy in his background. D = A few of the major goals have been achieved, but the student s achievement is so limited that he is not well prepared to work at a more advanced level in the same field. 1

UNIT 1: PL/SQL INTRODUCTION the purpose of PL/SQL Discuss the purposes of PL/SQL Explain the need for PL/SQL Explain the benefits of PL/SQL Identify the different types of PL/SQL block Output messages in PL/SQL UNIT 2: VARIABLES AND DATA TYPES writing PL/SQL that incorporate variables and data types Declare PL/SQL Variables Recognize valid and invalid identifiers List the uses of variables, declare and initialize variables, use bind variables List and describe various data types using the %TYPE attribute 2

3 UNIT 3: STATEMENTS, FUNCTIONS, BLOCKS, AND EXPRESSIONS writing PL/SQL using statements, functions, blocks, and expressions Write Executable Statements Identify lexical units in a PL/SQL block Use built-in SQL functions in PL/SQL and sequences in PL/SQL expressions Describe when implicit conversions take place and when explicit conversions have to be dealt with Write nested blocks and qualify variables with labels Write readable code with appropriate indentation UNIT 4: PROGRAMMING CONSTRUCTS programmatically creating PL/SQL statements to perform various functions in a database. Interact with the Oracle Database Server Create PL/SQL executable blocks using DML and transaction control statements Make use of the INTO clause to hold the values returned by a SQL statement Write Control Structures Identify the uses and types of control structures (IF, CASE statements and expressions) Construct and identify loop statements Apply guidelines when using conditional control structures 3

4 UNIT 5: PL/SQL STATEMENTS AND DATABASE INTERACTION writing PL/SQL to access and manipulate the database tables Work with Composite Data Types Create user-defined PL/SQL records Create a record with the %ROWTYPE attribute Create an INDEX BY table and INDEX BY table of records Describe the differences among records, tables, and tables of records UNIT 6: CURSORS AND EXCEPTIONS using cursors to interact with data and handle exceptions in PL/SQL Use Explicit Cursors Distinguish between usage of implicit and explicit cursors, use SQL cursor attributes Declare and control explicit cursors, use simple loops and cursor FOR loops to fetch data Declare and use cursors with parameters Lock rows with the FOR UPDATE clause and reference the current row with the WHERE CURRENT OF clause Handle Exceptions Define PL/SQL exceptions Recognize unhandled exceptions Handle different types of exceptions (pre-defined exceptions, non-predefined exceptions and user-defined exceptions) Propagate exceptions in nested blocks and call applications 4

10 The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
