2 LightSpeed 5 Upgrade Guide Welcome to LightSpeed 5.0! This document details the new features and breaking changes in LightSpeed with this release of the product. If you have any questions regarding any of these changes please post a question in the online support forum on the Mindscape website. This document is aimed at users who are already familiar with LightSpeed 4 and want to know what s new and what they should be aware of when moving to LightSpeed 5. If you re new to LightSpeed, you might want to check out the Getting Started guide and the User Guide first.

3 What s New in LightSpeed 5 Support for Visual Studio 2012 LightSpeed 5 adds an integrated designer for Visual Studio 2012 to complement our existing Visual Studio 2008 and Visual Studio 2010 integrated designers. Support for SQL Server 2012 LightSpeed 5 adds support for working with SQL Server 2012, both in the designer and through the runtime. Additionally we support SQL Server 2012 sequences as an identity generation scheme when using the SqlServer2012 provider. Compiled queries Compiled queries allows you to pre-process LightSpeed query objects into a compiled form, then repeatedly execute that compiled form in different units of work and with different parameters. Compiled queries improve performance by removing much of the query processing overhead each time you run the query. Compiled LINQ queries Similar to support for compiled queries with query objects, LINQ queries can also be compiled using the.compile() extension method which is provided in the Mindscape.LightSpeed.Linq namespace. Support for non-versioned partial updates LightSpeed now supports partial updates for entities which are not versioned using the LockVersion field. You can now use this by applying an UnversionedPartialUpdate attribute to your entity. When updating an entity with this attribute applied only fields which have changed will be applied and an additional check will be made to compare the value in the database to the value that was originally materialized with the entity, if they do not match then a concurrency exception will be thrown.

4 Support for specifying raw SQL on query object LightSpeed 5 adds the RawSql property to the Query object which allows you to specify a native SQL statement to be executed. When setting this property any other aspects of the Query will be ignored and the RawSql value will be executed directly. This allows you to use specific SQL statements in conjunction with standard LightSpeed query objects when joining on another query or specifying an underlying query. IMPORTANT: By using this property you must manually specify the SQL statement yourself which can expose you to risk of SQL injection attacks if you are using any user supplied data directly into the SQL statement.

5 Migrating from earlier versions Breaking Changes in LightSpeed 5 The following are known changes to the product since LightSpeed 4.0. If you have an existing system using LightSpeed 4.0 which you are upgrading to 5.0 please review these changes to check if you need to make modifications your system prior to upgrading. LightSpeed Compatibility Build Previously we shipped a.net 2.0 compatible build of LightSpeed (Mindscape.LightSpeed.20.dll) which allowed the runtime to be used in.net 2.0 environments where.net 3.5 was not installed. As of LightSpeed 5 we are no longer providing this build as part of the standard distribution of LightSpeed. If you require this build you should remain on LightSpeed 4 and not upgrade to LightSpeed 5.
