5 Automating the lifecycle of the data-tier by enabling developers to make changes to a data-tier application. Including policies that capture the intent of the developers, as well as deployment requirements on the instances of SQL Server where DACs can be deployed. It also gives administrators an application level view of resource usage in their system.

6 A DAC simplifies the process of supporting upgrades from one version of a database to another. Using DAC, the database developer only has to build one DAC package. DAC package describes the schema used by the new version of the application.

7 DACs are designed to offer data-tier automation. Collecting large numbers of entities into one DAC that can be managed as a single unit. DAC allows tighter integration of data-tier development with development of associated application code.

8 DAC package can be used for deployed with the help of Deploy Data-tier Application Wizard to install new instance of DAC. Same package can be used with the Upgrade Data-tier Wizard to upgrade an existing DAC instance. The Upgrade Data-tier Wizard compares the two schemas and dynamically performs the actions needed to transform the existing DAC instance to the new version of the DAC.

9 Creating a DAC type, or DAC definition, that specifies the objects used by the associated application. The DAC definition is then built into a DAC package, which is the file used to deploy and upgrade the DAC.

10 There are two ways to create a DAC definition and package: Open a data-tier application project in Visual Studio 2010, compile it as a DAC definition and place it in a DAC package. Extract a DAC definition from an existing database by using the Extract Datatier Application Wizard. Applications connect to the database associated with the DAC.

11 Administrators can monitor and manage the database associated with the DAC using established procedures. However, administrators can gain additional information from the DAC itself: The Deployed Data-tier Applications node of the SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) Utility Explorer presents an application- centered resource usage report that allows administrators to more quickly assess the health of their data-tier application instances. The Data-tier Application node of the Management Studio Object Explorer reports properties for each DAC instance.

12 A Data-tier Application can be extracted from an existing SQL Server database. The extraction process creates a DAC package file that contains all database objects and their related SQL Server elements. A DAC package can then be deployed to a target instance of SQL Server, to either create a new instance of the Data-tier Application or to upgrade an existing Data-tier Application.

13 For example, A DAC package file contains all database tables, stored procedures, views, users, and logins that map to the database users.

The developers build the project and compile a new version of the DAC This results to an updated DAC package file.

21 After developers create and test the new DAC package file, the file can then be sent to DBAs To push the changes done on the databases and instances of SQL Server from test to production environment. Deploy Data-tier wizard. Users can activate the Deploy Data-tier Application Wizard in SQL Server Management Studio. Configure the deployment parameters, and then propagate the changes to the appropriate target instance of SQL Server.

24 The data-tier application (DAC) upgrade has been changed to an in-place process that alters the existing database to match the schema defined in the new version of the DAC. In addition to just extracting a schema definition as a new DAC package file, you can now export both the schema definition and data from a database as a DAC export file. You can then import the file to create a new database with the same schema and data. Data-tier applications now support many more objects than in SQL Server 2008 R2.
