Agenda System-Period Temporal Tables Evolution DB2 11 GA Enhancements DB2 11 Post-GA Enhancements
System-Period Temporal Tables Evolution Traditional tracking and audit trails accomplished through triggers. Captured old row content; as well as who, when and what operation was performed. DB2 V10 Introduced System Temporal Tables to automatically track when the data was modified and retain original content in a history table. Does not track what the operation was or who performed the operation. Extended the FROM clause of a table access to include a SYSTEM- TIME
V11 GA Enhancements New Special Register: CURRENT TEMPORAL SYSTEM_TIME Extended PROFILES to support setting special register values Added bind options: SYSTEM_TIME SENSITIVE
V11 Post-GA Enhancement The PTFs for PM99683 (the preconditioning APAR), PI15298 (the enabling APAR), and PI15666 (the LOAD utility feature APAR) Delivers integrated auditing support using nondeterministic generated expression columns to allow for automatic tracking of some audit information. LOAD OVERRIDE option for generated columns, Remove the IGNOREFIELDS
Auditing Information DB2 can track some basic auditing information for you. Track when the data was modified and retain original content (System Temporal Tables) Track who modified the data (non-deterministic generated expression columns) Track the SQL operation that modified the data (nondeterministic generated expression column) Non-deterministic generated express columns can be used with any table
Track the SQL operation To track the SQL operation add a data change column to your table: OP_CODE CHAR(1) GENERATED ALWAYS AS (DATA CHANGE OPERATION) Contents will be populated with: I for INSERT U for UPDATE D for DELETE
Track who modified the data To track who modified the data add a special register or session variable column to your table: USERID VARCHAR(8) GENERATED ALWAYS AS (CURRENT SQLID) The column cannot have a DEFAULT and must not be defined as NOT NULL Data Type must be appropriate for value
Special Registers CURRENT CLIENT_ACCTNG VARCHAR(255) CURRENT CLIENT_APPLNAME VARCHAR(255) CURRENT CLIENT_CORR_TOKEN VARCHAR(255) CURRENT CLIENT_USERID VARCHAR(255) CURRENT CLIENT_WRKSTNNAME VARCHAR(255) CURRENT SERVER CHAR(16) CURRENT SQLID VARCHAR(n) n 8 SESSION_USER or USER VARCHAR(128)
Session Variables SYSIBM.PACKAGE_NAME SYSIBM.PACKAGE_SCHEMA SYSIBM.PACKAGE_VERSION VARCHAR(128) VARCHAR(128) VARCHAR(122)
Sample System Temporal Table CREATE TABLE DEPT_BASE (DEPTNO CHAR(3) NOT NULL,.,.,.,.,USER_ID VARCHAR(8) GENERATED ALWAYS AS (CURRENT SQLID),OP_CODE CHAR(1) GENERATED ALWAYS AS (DATA CHANGE OPERATION),S_START TIMESTAMP(12) NOT NULL GENERATED ALWAYS AS ROW BEGIN,S_END TIMESTAMP(12) NOT NULL GENERATED ALWAYS AS ROW END,TRAN_ID TIMESTAMP(12) GENERATED ALWAYS AS TRANSACTION START ID,PERIOD SYSTEM_TIME (S_START,S_END)
History Table CREATE TABLE DEPT_HIST (DEPTNO CHAR(3) NOT NULL,,.,.,.,.,USER_ID VARCHAR(8),OP_CODE CHAR(1),S_START TIMESTAMP(12) NOT NULL,S_END TIMESTAMP(12) NOT NULL,TRAN_ID TIMESTAMP(12) Must contain the same number of columns as the base table No generated columns
Activate Versioning ALTER TABLE DEPT ADD VERSIONING USE HISTORY TABLE DEPT_HIST ON DELETE ADD EXTRA ROW ; The ON DELETE ADD EXTRA ROW is required to identify who performed the delete. The history will also contain the contents of the row before the delete
Load the DEPT_BASE LOAD INDDN(SYSREC1) RESUME NO INTO TABLE ODYLC.DEPT_BASE (DEPTNO POSITION( 1) CHAR(3),DEPTNAME POSITION( 5) VARCHAR,EMPNO POSITION(37) CHAR(6) NULLIF(EMPNO=' ') )
Contents after Load
Test Activity -- TEST AUDIT UPDATE ODYLC.DEPT_BASE SET EMPNO = '000040' WHERE DEPTNO = 'D01' ; DELETE FROM ODYLC.DEPT_BASE WHERE DEPTNO = 'F22' ; INSERT INTO ODYLC.DEPT_BASE (DEPTNO,DEPTNAME,EMPNO) VALUES('XXX','TEST NAME',NULL) ;
Base after Updates
History after Update For the delete you will see 2 rows, the original row contents and the extra row to track WHO performed the delete operation. Note: the USER_ID of the delete could have been different from the ID of the insert.
Query Using SYSTEM_TIME SELECT * FROM DEPT_BASE FOR SYSTEM_TIME FROM TIMESTAMP(' :00:00') TO TIMESTAMP(' :00:00 );
LOAD Utility Changes OVERRIDE (.,.,. ) SYSTEMPERIOD IDENTITY TRANSID NONDETERMINISTIC Remove IGNOREFIELDS YES Allows unloaded data to be loaded into the GENERATED ALWAYS columns
