Gone are the days where gigabytes of data were considered a very large volume of data. Organizations are now trying to manage tens of terabytes of data for an operational store. 4 Introduction SAP Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (SAP SYBASE ASE) 15.7 was designed to address the challenges of terabyte-scale operational environments, and SAP Sybase ASE 15.7 ESD2 continues this design imperative by providing additional improvements in the area of performance, security, and monitoring and diagnostics. SAP Sybase ASE 15.7 introduced the following functionality to address data explosion: Storage Optimization: Compression In-row LOBS Create non-materialized non-null columns without data copy Ability to shrink the transaction log Application Developer Productivity: Simpler and more efficient LOB retrieval and manipulation Greater flexibility around concurrency and isolation levels Enhanced SQL expressiveness Support for scripting language drivers Monitoring and Diagnostics: Save abstract plan information in the statement cache Output cached plan in XML Analyze dynamic parameters before running a query Monitor lock timeouts Display statistics and histograms for various objects via a system procedure Monitor cursor statements Analyze the query plan generated Security Administration: Object ownership change Support for login profiles Split knowledge/dual control for protecting encryption keys Improved encryption for FIPS compliance Single sign-on and end to end Kerberos credential forwarding Performance: Reducing query latency, especially for dynamic SQL SAP SYBASE ASE Kernel updates to better utilize parallel hardware Introducing SAP Sybase ASE 15.7 ESD2 We provide here an overview of new functionalities and capabilities in SAP Sybase ASE 15.7 ESD 2 along with the benefits you can expect from moving to the new release. SAP Sybase ASE 15.7 ESD2 includes: Improved VLDB Performance Operational scalability Query performance Storage optimization and recovery Improved security Enhanced monitoring and diagnostics VLDB Performance Operational Scalability Online Utilities Increase in the volume of data is bound to increase the length of the maintenance window. Maintenance windows are used to improve data quality by executing utilities that reorganizes data or recreates the indexes on the table for better response time. In prior releases these utilities took exclusive access on the whole data for the completion of their job and the duration of the utility will depend on the volume of data in the table. This feature helps improve data availability during the maintenance windows. It allows reorg online to be performed without blocking regular operations. The result is increased data availability and decreased data disruption to business operations. Split /Merge Partitions SAP Sybase ASE 15.0 introduced semantic partitioning schemes. With semantic partitioning of data, there is a possibility that data distribution amongst various partitions becomes skewed with time. Or, the way data was originally partitioned may not suit the current requirements. SAP Sybase ASE 15.7 ESD2 introduces the concept of redistributing data in order to maintain the partitioned data effectively over long periods of time. This has improved the performance benefits of data partitions. Three major operations are introduced: Split partition operation not only supports data growth but retains the benefits of partitioning. Since it is a minimally logged operation, recovery is not possible. Merge partition on the other hand, combines related data for efficient access. And since it is a logged operation, it is fully recoverable. Move partition moved the entire partition to a specified segment and uses exclusive locks during the operation. Fast Logged bcp Traditionally, bcp utility is used by customers to load data into SAP Sybase ASE from an external source. Since it was quite slow, fast bcp was introduced which was 75% to 80% faster. However, this was a partially logged operation and a fully logged operation was preferable during recovery. 4 SAP White Paper New Features in SAP Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise 15.7 ESD2

5 Fast logged bcp is designed to provide the improved performance and allow the entire operation to be logged. Although there is a very small penalty to be paid for logging the entire operation, fast logged bcp is still much faster than the traditional slow bcp. Expanded DB Size To support the requirements of terabytesize databases, SAP Sybase ASE 15.7 ESD2 has been enhanced to support a maximum database size of 64TB compared to the 32 TB capacity earlier of earlier releases. Query Performance Pre-Computed Result Sets SAP Sybase ASE 15.7 ESD2 introduces pre-computed result sets as a mechanism to improve query performance. A pre-computed result set is a view where the result is computed, stored and available for future use. Once configured for a pre-computed result set, SAP Sybase ASE pre-computes a query and attempts to use the pre-computed result to answer the actual query. A pre-computed result set can also be referred to as a materialized view. It is considered a view since it includes query definition stored in the system tables, and a table since it includes persistent data. The advantage of pre-computed result sets is enhanced performance with already available result sets. Hash Based Update Statistics Hash-based statistics gathering on minor index attributes and unindexed columns will significantly reduce elapsed time and resource usage. This allows SAP Sybase ASE to perform a single table scan to updates statistics resulting in a reduction in the number of scans as well as disk based sorting for improved performance. This operation does not require a large tempdb allocation ending up in significant reduction in resource usage. User Defined Opt Goals This feature is an enhancement to the Setting Opt Goal functionality to create a new optimizer goal that will define a set of active criteria. This provides the flexibility to create a new opt-goal and change it dynamically depending on the query. Query Plan Sharing SAP Sybase ASE version 15.7 ESD 2 can share query plans. These shared query plans are cloned from primary query plans and avoid the need for Adaptive Server to create or recompile query plans that are identical to existing plans. Performance improvement is observed as Adaptive Server shares query plans instead of reusing or recompiling them. A slight change/reduction to procedure cache memory usage is also observed as primary query plans are pinned in the cache while Adaptive Server uses their shared query plans. Storage Optimization and Recovery Enhanced Dump and Load Most DBAs use scripts for all of their activities including create database and other DDLs which used to be helpful in recreating the original database environment. However, if the scripts were lost, it was a herculean task to recreate the database environment if a corruption or other mishap occurred. Enhancements to the dump header are included in SAP Sybase ASE 15.7 ESD2 to store information about database devices in the dump header. This information along with segment maps are used to generate a sequence of disk init, sp_cacheconfig and disk init, create database, and alter database commands for the target database during dump image creation. This provides essential information for creating a database from the dump image. Concurrent Dump DB and Dump Tran SAP Sybase ASE versions 15.7 ESD 2 allows a dump transaction command to run concurrently while a dump database command is running, reducing the risk of losing database updates for a longer period than that established by the dump policy. Async DB Initialization This feature asynchronously initializes a database while it is being used. That is, the initialization is transparent to the user and the database is immediately available when it is created or altered, not when the database initialization is complete. Any task that uses a page of the database that is not yet initialized performs an initialization of the allocation unit on which the page resides. The asynchronous initialization is performed by a service task that is started by the create database or alter database commands. When it restarts, Adaptive Server automatically starts a new service task that completes the initialization. In a clustered environment, if an instance running the service task fails or is shut down, the coordinating instance starts a new service task to complete the initialization. Deferred Table Creation With this feature, SAP Sybase ASE allows the page allocation for a table to be deferred until the table is needed. Deferred tables are helpful for applications that create many tables for installation, but only use a small number of them. Tables are called deferred until Adaptive Server allocates their pages. Deferred tables have entries in system tables, which allows the objects associated with deferred tables such as views, procedures, and triggers to be created. Adaptive Server performs the page allocation for deferred tables when it inserts the first row (called table materialization). 6 first insert selects, deletes, updates, functions that report space usage or enforce referential integrity constraints during DML on other tables behave as if the table is empty. Alter Table Drop Column Without Data Copy SAP Sybase ASE version 15.7 ESD 2 adds the no datacopy parameter to the alter table drop column, which allows you to drop columns from a table without performing a data copy, and reduces the amount of time required for alter table drop column to run. Instead of immediately removing the columns from the table, the no datacopy updates the system tables, indicating the affected rows are reformatted the next time a user runs reorg rebuild or another datacopy operation. In-row Large Object Compression SAP Sybase ASE 15.7 ESD 2 supports in-row large object (LOB) compression. Adaptive Server uses in-row LOB compression in a newly-created table if: The table is implicitly or explicitly row- or page-compressed, and, Any of the In-row LOB columns in the table are implicitly or explicitly LOB compressed Adaptive Server performs in-row LOB compression in an upgraded, existing table if: The two conditions above are true, and, The user can run reorg rebuild or alter table commands that require a data copy. Security Granular Permissions Control SAP Sybase ASE 15.7 ESD2 introduces stricter internal controls to prevent unauthorized disclosure or modification of sensitive information. This addresses compliance regulations such as US Sarbanes-Oxley, US Healthcare Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Japan Privacy Law, EU Privacy Directive, and the US California Senate Bill This feature includes the mechanism to restrict system administrators and database owners from accessing user data and provides the flexibility to manage permissions based on site requirements. Predicated Privileges This functionality offers data privacy protection based on row-level access. It dynamically grants privileges to a user based on data content and context. Privileges on data may be granted subject to conditions which are evaluated at the time of accessing data. If conditions are not met, a data row is withheld. In addition, the model is extensible such that access to data may be specifically denied subject to a condition, allowing protection of data for exceptional conditions. Support for Encryption of Text/ Image/Unitext SAP Sybase ASE 15.7 ESD2 extends the boundary for encryption by adding support to text/image/unitext columns. If a text, unitext or image column is specified for encryption on the create table, alter table or select into command, SAP Sybase ASE will automatically encrypt data written to that column and decrypt data read from that column. Monitoring and Diagnostics Show Cached Plan in XML SAP Sybase ASE 15.7 ESD2 enhances a built-in function to track the performance of queries in the statement cache. This built-in function will return the following results: Query execution plan Optimizer cost estimate for query Parameter values, if any, when the cached query has been compiled. Parameter values, if any, when the query got its lowest performance. All of the above information will be returned to the client in an XML format. Compressing Shared Memory Dumps SAP Sybase ASE 15.7 ESD2 supports compression on shared memory dumps. Enhancements were made to memdump and memload command to support the compressed shared memory dump on conditions by sp_shmdumpconfig. A new server configuration parameter that controls whether CSMD will be compressed or not is now available. This functionality is very helpful in collecting diagnostics information, moving the dump, and providing storage savings. 6 SAP White Paper New Features in SAP Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise 15.7 ESD2

7 Summary SAP Sybase ASE 15.7 was developed to address the challenges of big data. SAP Sybase ASE 15.7 ESD2 enhances SAP Sybase ASE 15.7 with significant improvements to VLDB performance, security, and monitoring and diagnostics. SAP Sybase ASE 15.7 ESD2 is available to customers as of August In the database world, increased data volume translates into various issues operational scalability, decreased performance, crunch in storage and the need for increased security. SAP Sybase ASE 15.7 ESD2 has introduced several key features that help solve these issues. From redistributing data for maintaining partitioned data effectively to improving data availability during maintenance windows in a production environment, SAP Sybase ASE 15.7 ESD2 has enhanced the operational scalability experience for customers. In the query processing area, SAP Sybase ASE 15.7 ESD2 introduces pre-computed result sets and query plan sharing to improve query performance while giving flexibility to the user to create and define an opt-goal to support the optimizer in generating efficient query plans. Introducing stricter internal controls for permissions and extending encryption support to text/ image/unitext columns has moved the security standards in the Sybase database up a notch helping to address compliance regulations for security and privacy. In-row large object compression and deferred table creation are a few of the storage saving features included in SAP Sybase ASE 15.7 ESD2. And, enhancements have been made in the area of monitoring and diagnostics that will be helpful for customers to communicate diagnostic information to SAP.
